What makes a book literature? Why makes Tolstoy's works literature but not Stephenie Meyers'?inb4 >implying such and such write literature. You get my fucking point.tl;dr define literature
It's all subjective, really. As long as you can see art within a piece of writing, then it's literature.
writings that reflect on a symbolic and emotional level.
Literature is the written word in the most general sense possible, and has nothing to do with quality.
It is literature if it reflects the values and ideals of a given society in a way that calls attention to those values.Or so Terry Eagleton says.
The best you're going to get is family resemblance. I used to make these threads before I lost all hope in /lit/.
>>1122137Buck up, old chum! There's always hope for--eh fuck you're right.
>>1122124 No, this guy's right. Hell, this post is literature.
>>1122393Cool bro I've always felt that stop signs are literaturekill yourself you fucking degenerate
Stephenie Meyer is literatureits just not good literature, that's all.All novels and short stories are literature. Does poetry count too? I think so (poetry is taught in most of my lit classes).
literature is writing that really stands the test of time
Deep&Edgy, do you have any friends?
>What makes a book literature? If it weren't literature, I wouldn't be sittin' hea DISCUSSIN' it with ya, now WOUD EYE?
>>1122414How old are you TyBrax?
>>1122414I don't think he does. I find his heavy-hitting arguments, myopic subhuman talk pretty entertaining to read, but behind this facade I see a lonely young boy, yearning for acceptance.
>>1122430I'm 18. I've said so before I think. You won't tell me.I'll also tell you that I have no friends, will you tell me if you do or not?
Literature is writing with meaning, not simply for entertainment. That's not at all to detract from writing for entertainment however.
>>1122441>will you tell me if you do or not?Probably not, I have one or two people who refer to me as such but as far as I'm concerned they've stretched the concept too thinly for it to be in any way meaningful
>>1122456Yeah, mum and dad are a pretty thinly stretched definition of friends.
>>1122456Unfortunately this is of no use to me without an age estimate. I am going to try & make meaningful friends next month /lit/ <3
>>1122469He`s 22
I really hate these terms that have a pretense for objectivity when they're actually completely dependent on very personal opinion. It will depend on how good you think it is/how deep, intricate a plot you believe it has. And I'd rather use those terms instead, they're less vague.Same goes for "art" in its contemporary form. Or "hipster"; you can call that to anything and god knows what the fuck you actually meant or thought about it. IT'S CONSISTENTLY AND OUTRAGEOUSLY PARADIGMATIC AND SHAPED LIKE ITSELF
