I've survived two UNarmed riots, and while not exactly a walk in the park, it's not exactly hard to walk away with your life intact. Wet bandana over your face to take care of tear gas, avoid pepper spray like the plague, and have good knowledge of the footpaths in the area. These three things, and you'll be fine - it's not hard to outrun cops in body armor.

An armed riot, however, is a completely different animal from what I gather. Your best option is to scatter as soon as you hear shots being fired, I suppose.

Have a meeting/ looking out spot for the group you are with when SHTF in riot that can be defended if need be.

Communication equipment amongst each of you.

Stay away from the crowd to avoid trample, confusion and gun fire.
Out think, out maneuver and stay away from the fucking crowd.

I have a bag set up just for this.
It includes;
Rope, medical supplies, fire starting equipment, custom rations, sterno kit, Small machete accessible while wearing the pack along with small hatchet among a shit ton of other things.
All packed into a small running bag.

As stated in the first few posts, by not being on the front lines. If we're fighting riot police, then a significant display of organization is likely to be very intimidating for them, even though they're trained to fight larger forces, they aren't trained to fight larger forces that say 'fuck it. let's kill them' and work together.

I don't know if any of you have ever watched The Colony, but even an improvised shield makes a huge-fucking-difference.

You can only have so many people on a front line; everyone who isn't There is on standby to be surged forward; that can be a while. You obviously can't train everyone, but you can demonstrate teamwork and formation and people will follow suit because teamwork means survival against another force and there isn't a brain on the planet that fails to recognize that.

As far as riot against a military. I'd say your best option would be to go with slingshots, fire, golf clubs, and small groups moving alongside and assisting large groups; getting positions of elevated terrain out of the military's hands and working to disrupt their supply lines while advising the larger group on how to avoid running into
