Molotovs and "petrol bombs" are easiest to acquire, but be wary of using those for anything other than the direst of situations. They're uncontrollable once used and cause horrific if not fatal injuries.

For more tame methods of home defence, board up windows with plywood from the outside. Pack a BOB just in case. Keep doors locked and your head down. If the situation becomes worse, crowbars (perhaps pry-bars in British English?) make for a nasty hand to hand weapon. Or you could always jump on the amazon.co.uk bandwagon and buy yourself a folding entrenchment shovel or baseball bat. Keep your family together and have a constant check in when leaving the house. Always let someone know where you're going and have proof and an escape route in case you get caught in a bad situation.

Nobody uses baseball bats in warfare either. We are talking about improvised, civie-legal weapons. The weight on a bat is all wrong for a weapon of its size. You have to put too much power in a swing and you can't recover quick enough. A Boken is balanced, yet strong enough to crack someone's skull with a quick chop that can easily be recovered from.

Really any balanced rod that you can wield using a fulcrum method would work, Boken are just common at martial arts supply stores and they have an edge and slight curve that further decrease point of impact.
