    1.1 MB Making a stock from scratch (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ BOOF ☜(゚ヮ゚☜) !AWEsomEEEE!!R/52MaMCG2y 12/13/10(Mon)17:24 No.7856113 sticky
Here is a thread several months in the making, how to make a stock using nothing but hand tools, the only tool used that required power is a drill press.

Starting back around august I decided to build one of these for my 590a1 in my spare time, I tried to get at least 30 minuets into it a day. I used to get customers in that would want me to build them custom furniture, but these days everything is synthetic and the only stocks I make are for myself.

So here it is. About 40 hours of work.

I have about 300 photos, so it may take me a bit to pick the best ones for the thread.

    Friction tape, yes.

The most important tool are the chisels. Only two brands are considered top tier, these and "two cherries"

This set is made in Germany. I have had them for 2 years and only sharpened them once.

I no longer offer wood working as a job. Back when guns didn't break as often and I had more time I would. Plus, this is an expensive job.

Next, a bolt is made to replace the standard bolt.

    Boof, two things:

One, I admire you for doing this for the same reason I admire anyone who does a selfless and kind thing for the totally unworthy and utterly ungrateful: Though I may not share their enthusiasm folr this kind of activity, I can appreciate the reason they find it rewarding.

Two, what kind of walnut are you using?

    mm. Very nice chisels, there.
Wish mine were quite as gleamingly bright, but they're very dark carbon steel, Mathieson chisels, passed down from my great-grandfather's workshop.

Can you post up info on those two-ended riffer rasp files later? I've not seen their likes before.

And as a little trivia, did you know that Solingen, for those chisels, has been a centre of blade-making since the twelth century AD, and is responsible for the production of not just chisels, but a countless number of swords, knives and similar items through history?

However buying all the tools and necessary OC(other crap) is expensive, and time consuming.
I do have my grandpa's old stuff in his garage to work with, but my grandma lets the dog live in there so it always smells like shit. (Unlivable.)

Do CST, and take the armorer courses that are offered by gun companies. You will be making your own bolt action rifle, learn machining, welding, stock making/checkering, everything you would ever need to fix a firearm. plus you can take courses not usually offered to civies like sig/colt armorer.

I still regret not taking colt's course, but I did take beretta, glock, sig, and S&W. brings in extra money doing warrenty work.

Probably won't be around to answer any questions. I really only come here to laugh my ass off. This is a funny website. Just figured as a CST grad, and gunsmith I would give you a heads up since you were interested.
