Because police are still too far away from them. The 5 minutes it takes (on a good day) for the cops to arrive, you're already dead and the cops are cleaning up a murder scene.

There is a Sheriff's deputy who parks in front of my house sometimes. I talked to him and he said that in case of disaster (terrorist attack, hurricane, earthquake) don't rely on the police because they will be too busy trying to restore order. He told me to shelter in place, stockpile food, water, weapons, and ammo. I've got water, weapons, and ammo stockpiled. I still need a gas mask and a radio.

    >gas mask

If you live near train tracks, I can see person owning a mask with filters that will protect you from Hydrogen Chloride and other common industrial chemicals.

If there is ever a train wreck with a hazardous chemical spill you evacuate like everyone else, but at least the mask makes the evacuation safer.

Far too many people plan on putting on a gas mask so they can stay behind to "protect their property". Masks are for short term use without full body coverage and a respirator you can still get fucked up.

What is worse is that many of the "domestic preparedness" (DP) masks and filters flooding the market are meant for protection against anthrax and other terrorist shit. Some of these are useless in a chemical spill or other real world situation.

To me it seems like the usual "culture of fear" bullshit. BUY A GENERATOR FOR Y2K! STOCK UP ON CIPRO FOR THE NEXT ANTHRAX ATTACK!

I never denied being a liberal. What does that have to do with me being right?

Lets use a better example than the flu. You are 40x more likely to die of heart disease than be the victim of a violent crime. Yet tons of advocates of carry don't do everything they can to live healthily. Chances are you don't exercise, eat fast food, and are either over or underweight. The only reason you carry is you need an equalizer just in case an evil robber attacks you (even though that never happens in your area), since you are too frail to defend yourself otherwise. Prove me wrong.

I'm not saying it's correct or a logical fear, but the fear in the general public is there. Scaring the public w/ guns isn't a good way to get them to vote pro-gun. Actually it is. I live in the SF Bay Area, and have been to gun shows, ranges, and shops. Walmart here got a big protest a year or so back because they had .22LR rifles (nothing bigger than that). Newspaper constantly has something about murder or gang violence, and whenever i over hear people talking about anything gun related outside of a range/shop/show it's usually "how could they let someone just buy a gun like that? don't they know it's just a tool for murder?"

CA has open carry legally throughout unincorporated areas, and concealed carry if you manage to get a license from the county where you live. and it's honestly the opinions i hear in town hall or open court about it in my area.

I live in the SF bay area and go to the gun shows and shops as well. You read one loudmouthed editorial or see 10 people picketing a gun show and assume everyone else must agree with them? It's no different than the other side pointing to a few loud and vocal rednecks saying "OBAMA AINT GON TAKE MY DAMN GUNS!" and assuming all gun owners are like that. I expect someone from this area to be above the us or them cold dead hands bullshit, but I guess stupidity is everywhere.

ouch. i think measure M on the local ballot has a similar thing to outlawing any ammo with "magnum" in the name, which they did down in LA years ago. boar territory is all over the delta and further north, so people stop in the east bay for ammo/supplies sometimes.

then there's the whole july 2010 thing requiring ammo sales to be in person.

this is off topic. i support the right for people to carry (open/concealed whatever) i just know it isn't for me, and i just have my own anecdotes from conversations on why some people vote against it.

heck, a complete ban on all handguns passed in san francisco, but was quashed as unconstitutional in court

don't put words in my mouth - i didn't say that i agreed with them or that i'm assuming that's the only argument out there. that is just my experience with the issue because i'm uninformed on all sides of the topic (i don't really care about carry law). please read what i wrote instead of reaction posting.

    >a complete ban on all handguns passed in san francisco, but was quashed as unconstitutional in court

Yet unconstitutional gun laws are still in place in Washington DC, New York, Chicago...

And we wonder why this country is soo fucked up.

If you are uninformed and don't care it's probably best to not involve yourself in the debate in the first place. Going to the Cow Palace on May 1st/2nd?

90% of people who own guns are fucking insane anyway. Collecting guns for the sake of collecting and/or shooting is one thing, but honestly believing you need a gun for "protection" is nuts. The places where you would need a gun for protection ironically are the areas with the strictest gun laws.
