They were some distance away as watching the video you can see the camera begin vibrating from gunfire about a second or so before the rounds impact the group.

After watching the video several times this seems like a pretty egriegous violation on the part of the US Army. The cover up only makes it worse. Courts martial should follow, but unfortunately the military protects its own interests above all else (I served in the army - firsthand knowledge).

Going through the video right now. At some points, it does look like they have weapons. Seems like the Apache was a bit too eager to fire though, I thought they would need more confirmation to let loose other than seeing some guys that look like they have weapons. It is a war zone though. It's not really a great idea to be peaking out of corners with a bunch of soldiers with loose trigger fingers.

"Well it looks like he has an RPG, I don't really want to open fire, but I can plainly see an insurgent carrying weapons who is putting my life, or the life of an innocent person, at risk. I have no choice under these circumstances but to shoot."

He was saying "I see some people who I could shoot. I need a reason though. They are carrying things in their hands, I'll call those things weapons, and request permission to shoot them. Come on, give me fucking permission, I could be shooting them right now. AWESOME, DIE YOU FUCKERS! Hooray I killed them! Oh wait, some bastard survived. And he's unarmed so I don't get to finish him off. I hope he picks up a weapon... I'll watch him closely just in case he goes anywhere near anything that looks like a weapon, then I'll blow him to pieces. Fuck, some civilian van has pulled up, looks like they are trying to help the guy who I shot for no reason. LET ME SHOOT THE FUCKING VAN. They are, uh, picking up the 'weapons'. OK! I can shoot! Die die die die die. Hooray! I shot the shit out of that van. That will show them not to go about their lives without being in constant fear of my superior firepower and indiscriminate use of it. >Apache escorting troops/etc.

    >I see some people who I could shoot. I need a reason though. They are carrying things in their hands, I'll call those things weapons, and request permission to shoot them

If I don't shoot, I could be putting my fellow soldiers in harms way.

    >AWESOME, DIE YOU FUCKERS! Hooray I killed them!

Honestly, who wouldn't feel awesome as a CHOPPAH GUNNAH

    >Oh wait, some bastard survived. And he's unarmed so I don't get to finish him off.

    Following rules of engagement.

    >I hope he picks up a weapon...

    Again, following rules of engagement

    >I'll watch him closely just in case he goes anywhere near anything that looks like a weapon, then I'll blow him to pieces.

    Sounds logical to me.

    >Fuck, some civilian van has pulled up, looks like they are trying to help the guy who I shot for no reason. LET ME SHOOT THE FUCKING VAN.

You're fighting guerrilla fighters, who's one tactic that's making them so successful is that they blend in with the population. You can't really know for sure if it's a civilian van.

I don't think it's taught, it becomes normalized after daily exposure to it. Nurses, paramedics, doctors, firemen, police, mostly all don't react well at first but learn to cope quickly. Watching your friends and companions die I doubt can ever be taught and those memories drive stoic level headed people insane.

So the guy sees what was possibly a threat to the convoy he was called into protect, ask permission to fir multiple time, albeit enthusiastically, and toast some news caster and a few ak wielding guys + a van that drove up to drag the guys away, who for some dumbass reason decided "HEY LETS TAKE THE KIDS TO THE AREA THAT WAS JUST SPRAYED BY SOME FLYING MONSTERS DEATHCUM"

    I'm okey with this.

The Geneva Conventions aren't around to try to make war civilized. This isn't Star Trek where the civilians calmly march into suicide machines. The Geneva Conventions were put in place to try to keep stupid people from being killed needlessly. Picking your kids up from daycare in your unmarked van, then driving around a war zone picking up bodies and equipment make you stupid.

No, there is a line between the two that the pilot should be. You can't second guess ever time you need to fire, you can't be reluctant to fire until the LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT OF SAFTEY, but just the same, the way he was talking in this video was accurate to what you posted.

The thing is, the american military is a catchment for any piece of shit that can't get a job stacking shelves. 75% of the training syllibus is getting these people to belive in themselves that they are NOT worthless, they CAN do this job, that they are the BEST of the BEST, they are ready to KILL, and the folks that Command says to DESERVE to DIE. That leaves only 25% of time to, y'know, actually train up their efficency as leaders or soldiers. And that's what leads to this video.
