I can't imagine that there are many left now, after the H&K upgrade. But it could be worth something as a collector's item, afterall you would own the world's most defective assault rifle. Not many people can say that.

If it were (somehow) a transferable full auto in the US, maybe $5000, mostly for the sake of selling.
If it were just semi, or illegal, maybe $400?

ah, its so good to see that storied from 25 years ago are still being taken as fact.

I presume the M16 still jams constantly, then, by that book?

the L85 was a terrible rifle when it was released. the problems with it were rectified almost 20 years ago, and its reliability in use is virtually identical to the AR platform.

L85A1 had all of the problems, ALL of them.

L85A2 is where they fixed them. A1 is still shit if they are still around.

The first M16 had the problems, the later versions got a chrome lined bore and barrel to fix the retardation.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/12(Wed)08:13 No.11478350

Why is the L85 is represented by the A1 variant and the M16 is the A4.

If they were both A1s they could be have silly hijinks together.

    Because of reasons.

A few people think that she may get "fixed" by the H&K family in the show eventually.

the A1 no longer exists in service. the only examples are in museums like the Royal Armouries. Every single one in service was refurbished to A2 standard.

Which gun gave soldiers the bigger problems M16 or L85 ?
    >> Anonymous 04/25/12(Wed)08:32 No.11478420
Depends. Early batches in the production run were actually alright; it was only the later ones that were seriously poor because by that point Enfield knew they were going under and gave no shits.

I saw an armourer compare two once, and the late-run one was quite horrifying. The difference in quality of machiening (a millimeter or more difference in some places), tool marks on the inside of the reciever, parts not fitting together correctly between rifles, improper tempering of critical parts such as the sear and of course the switch to cheaper plastics resulting in the infamous mosquito repellant handguard. He could do a better job of machining with the shit he had in the shop.

The development of the SA80 was a complete farce, read this:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2002/oct/10/military.jamesmeek
Basically; constantly redesigned to fit new requirements, Royal Ordnance privatized and contract outsourced during first production run, rushed into service to replace dwindling stocks of SLR parts, sub-standard testing, and many more.

    I liked this bit:
    >1985
    >H&K contracted to make training ammunition
    >MOD send two rifles for the Germans to work with
    >Germans receive rifle
    >immediately call MOD
    >German: "You know it goes off when you drop it?"

    >Which gun gave soldiers the bigger problems M16 or L85 ?

given the M16 was introduced during vietnam and there are plenty of accounts of its failures killing US soldiers, whereas the L85 was introduced during peacetime, giving the british time to work around its faults without the pressures of combat, I would presonally say the M16 was worse.

had the L85 been the L82, and introduced right before the Falklands war, on the other hand... then I'd have likely said that it were worse for soldiers.
