Do places like Hinamizawa exist anywhere in America? A small town, with no (or few) paved roads, out in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a forest, perhaps surrounded by mountains. No loud noises of the big, or even moderately sized city, no bright lights drowning out the stars...

As far as I can tell, the only "small towns" like that are basically farm towns with a mile between every building, and all of them are located in the bible belt. I don't want that (especially the bible belt part), I want a small, but closely-knit village.

Or do happy little villages only exist in Japan?

Speaking of japan and small towns. Apparently there is no demand for furusato houses and you can buy one for a few grand. You could technically own a small town worth of houses for a years worth of work. Id like to do it, problem is visa and stuff.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/12(Thu)05:00 No.8537258
You should look for a country with mountains where they build houses close like that in the valleys.

I live in Europe, but in my country it's the same, basically no villages like that. The people in the countryside here tend to live quite far from each other as well. Maybe some middle-European country?

Haha, I knew someone was gonna make an Onikakushi or Hinamizawa Syndrome joke.

But nah, I'm just sick of this concrete jungle bullshit. I want to live in a place where I can walk outside and see trees that weren't planted solely to make the city less grey looking. A place where it's quiet and the air is fresh. Nature, y'know?

Add "affluent" and I lived in a place like this. One thing stands out now: the people were terrible. Gossipy, small-minded, insular and a bit creepy. That's what happens when your entire world is shaped by a tiny village.

Since I'm a loner the beautiful scenery made up for it, but you said "closely-knit" so I guess you're looking for community...

When I was little I lived in one of the farming areas of Indiana. I fucking loved it there. I looked up the area on Google Street View recently and I cried from how much I missed it.

Now I live in south Florida, near Miami. You can't see a single star here. Ever. The whole goddamn city is lit up at all times and you hear cars and trains and all that shit even in the dead of night. Feels bad man.

Dude. I live in an apartment building with THE most gossipy people in the fucking world. Recent example:
    - My neighbor came over to borrow some tea bags.
    - This one neighbor who doesn't like me or my mom gets all nasty with us, insisting that we were dealing drugs (we don't).
    - Someone overhears this, tells another neighbor, who in turn tells the woman my mom babysits for that we were dealing drugs.
    - The woman calls up my mom, and asks if this is true. We tell her it's bullshit and everything is fine.
    - Mom tells her friend about the situation.
    - It comes back to my mom that her friend had told someone, who told someone, who told this other friend of my mom's that she was fired from babysitting because she's a drug dealer.
    - We insist that no, this is entirely bullshit.
    - That person that we just told it was bullshit to tells the person who told them about it that it was bullshit.
    - Somehow this gets back around to us that our friend (the last person we spoke to) said that we were drug dealers.
    - We call them and they confirm that they said no such thing.

    ALL OF THIS SHIT
    OVER FUCKING TEA BAGS
AND NONE OF IT WAS TRUE
    Fuck I hate this place.

Yeah but in a city it's easier to ignore, and you don't have people gossiping about you other than your social circle. In a village it's the whole fucking town, even people who don't know you personally. The amount of people in cities means that no one really cares about you, which suits me.

Some old bitches found out about it and put up fliers around the building about how some whore was living there and she was a danger to their children and shit. One day, one of them passed by her, smelled pot on her, called the cops and had her arrested for possession of pot.

And then they deported her because she was an illegal immigrant. All because some old bitches didn't want a stripper in the building

Alaska is a very boring state. The free handouts are nice but aren't going to amount to much more than a month's salary. No taxes are alright, but it really doesn't matter given how much more expensive everything is here(according to many of my acquaintances). Still, it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

But there really is nothing to do. Competitive online gaming is bad due to lag, competitive offline gaming is lame because the communities are small and there's nobody good besides one player, the internet is monopolized and there is nothing faster than a slow DSL which has unlimited bandwidth. GCI has a complete monopoly on fast internet here.

That being said, if you like the outdoors or and/or are OK with either being gouged for internet or dealing with slow speed and bandwidth caps, it's not a bad place to live.

There's certainly lots of places in Alaska where it's dead, but you're sure as hell not getting halfway decent internet there.

As I said, if you like the outdoors, it's great. Plenty of small, isolated towns to live in, although many of them are largely native in population. And the winters are really beautiful no matter where you live, but they can be somewhat scary in some areas(some places had enough snow to partially bury houses this year).

When I lived in Canada I lived in one such village, OP. They're all over the place. Just drive ~50 km north of the US border and you'll almost definitely happen upon one.

Also, as a side note, I currently live in the bible belt and I really don't understand why everyone thinks it's such an awful, backward place filled with hicks and ignorant religious fanatics. In fact, the only difference I've noticed is that people around here are generally more congenial and helpful. A mountainous area in Japan is a hell of a lot different from Alaska. We're an entire nation's distance from the rest of the nation, and we have the lowest population in the entire nation despite having the largest area last time I checked. That's also part of why things are more expensive here in general. I might also mention that a large percentage of our population is natives who don't know and don't really care about the internet.

Japan being able to wire itself well everywhere is a matter of course by comparison. Not that the US is a good country.

-Not independent; we have to pay taxes to America and abide by its rules
    -Incredibly low pop density
-Very low population; you seriously think Alaska's population compares to Japan's?
-Ethnic mixing, mixed cultures, mixed interests, no unity
-Cold weather makes for high upkeep on infrastructure of any kind
-All talented people go out of Alaska for work and school because that's naturally where the opportunity is; the people who stay are either lazy, stupid, or have family

Alaskan real estate must not be too expensive, we can get a nice mansion overlooking some beautiful landscape.
We could live off the free Alaskan money and autism bucks, or maybe have some work in an oil refinery nearby. You can make good money in those, it's just being far away from civilization that gets to people. But that won't bother us.
