Autism
is a spectrum disorder and it comes in any number of forms. The
symptoms aren't necessarily the same in everyone - not all of them
suffer from low empathy, some will have panic attacks, some won't etc.
but they all have that "distance" from normal humans and difficulty
socialising.
The reason people don't like autism is because it
generally means they have to let someone off in situations where they
think they have a divine right to rip the shit out of them, and actually
have to be patient with them. It challenges the conservative notion of
"personal responsibility".
It started with "aspergers is overdiagnosed" then "aspergers isn't real" then "autism isn't real". It's silly.
Autism is often pretty obvious, even aspergers if you spend enough time with them though.
I
don't know why it's caught on as a meme, but I find myself using it
sometimes unintentionally. I used to describe Nintendo's games as
"autistic", but not in an insulting manner, just the in way they
de-emphasised dialogue and emphasised imaginative designs and
environments - they come off as something that appeals to or could be
designed by an autistic.
"Autism" on /jp/ basically seems to get used anywhere the word looks amusing.
