Why should I care about Pink Floyd in particular and not one of dozens other bands that are probably great?
Fuck, I can't even keep up with a fraction of current musical output of one goddamn country, what makes you think I'd be able add a whole music history to that.

I think it's just kind of assumed, since you could post every single album of theirs and Hot Space is the only one that people would even consider questioning.

I personally put this ahead of NatO, though, and honestly I would put DatR slightly ahead of it as well. NatO has some fucking amazing stuff ('39, Death on Two Legs, '39', Love of My Life, '39, Seaside Rendezvous, '39, You're My Best Friend, Love of My Life, '39, '39) but I don't go quite as gaga over BohRhap as other people and there's something about I'm In Love With My Car that just doesn't quite do it for me.

Pink Floyd devised a compromise between the free-form tonal jam, the noisy, cacophonous freak out, and the eccentric, melodic ditty. This amalgam and balance was inspired and nourished by Syd Barrett's gentle madness on their first two albums, their psychedelic masterpieces: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967), that includes the pulsating, visionary trips of Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive (the bridge between space-rock and cosmic music); and A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968), that contains the stately crescendo and wordless anthem of A Saucerful Of Secrets and the subliminal raga of Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun.

When you are prepared for a song and album like this,
there really isn't anything that much more rewarding in terms of musical consumption.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P70tSW8pAi0

Some of Tull's work and Yes certainly are right up there but in terms of brilliant, united artistic focus, it is indistinguishable, when Gabriel's vocals cut in 16/32 beat time, I just can't imagine how absolutely amazing that must feel as a singer live. Watch his performances, he is absolutely transcended above humanity

Smile was admittedly released as sort of a tongue-in-cheek move. If you listen to the first portion of the album with that in mind, it becomes much easier to appreciate. Then, it gets serious as fuck. Pink was more consistent sure, but Smile goes deeper.

With all due respect, I don't really like Smile because it was made with weird instruments and edits. It's like Psycho was a great film, but it was an edit film. Without edits, you have no film. It's not a beautiful story told the way Alfred Hitchcock would make a great story... It's an edit. Alfred Hitchcock was smart enough to know that, I hope Brian Wilson is smart enough to know that.
