Most accepted theory of this change was that the power of her grimoire leaked into her, changing her into a youkai. More or less this-ish, Patchy is naturally a Magician, Alice isn't, though she became one between mystic square and pcb... though I believe thats a retcon compared to pc-98 canon.
Marisa on the other hand isn't a magician by species, think of it more as a class. (of course if she keeps it up she'll almost surely turn into a youkai one day herself)

Well if you go by DnD Sorcerers are humans with an old blood line and they can trace their ancestery back to a dragon. The most common seams to be red dragons. Sorcerers are born with a natural ability to use magic. They are more human than dragon but they have dragon blood in them. If a sorcerer gains enough power they can tap more in to their dragon blood and become a whole other creature. Doesnt sound to different from magicians.

Mages can gain enough power and turn in to other creatures as well, thought the most common form is a Lich.

Its still my opinion that Patchy was born human and turned Youkai overtime by tapping her passive Youkai blood line. Patchy is defiantly a Sorcerer.

It isn't a bloodline or genetic thing that allows you to use magic naturally, like sorcerors from D&D (who cast via Charisma btw). It is a literal race/species.

The difference is that in D&D Sorcerors are still human/elf/whatever, it's just that due to their bloodline or their genetics or 'nature' they have an inuitive ability to cast magic. That is why they cast via CHA rather than INT, because for them it isn't understanding magical theory, it's a performance of an intuitive artform.

Patchy is nothing like that. She is literally another species, much like how elves/dwarfs/orcs are different from humans in D&D.

Patchy is much more like a wizard/mage/witch monster class that has its own dice rather than taking classes.
