When was the last time you read a book? What book was it?.I want to know /jp/'s taste in literature
About a year ago. Christie's mystery.
I have never read a single book cover to cover in my entire life.
1 month agoThe Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya...
Last time I was really engulfed in an actual book was probably Series of unfortunate events. I could never find a book that interests me but when I first picked up that series I had a glimpse of what it was like to love reading.Another was Asimov's Robot Dreams but I never got around to finishing it.
>>7693695That's not a book.
Das Boot probably.
A little while a go, and Snow Crash.
Ghost Story.
Last one was "Confieso que he vivido" By the chilean poet Pablo Neruda. And it was amazing! The title translates to something around "Confess I lived". I'm not from a Latin Country btw
A few weeks ago, Emil Cioran - The trouble with being born. Also, reported.
A Dance with Dragons
Finished a manual on the mystery genre for exams yesterday, trudging through A dance with dragons because it's fucking boring.
I read dune back in may.
>>7693708>>7693710
>>7693710
>>7693707What did you think of Murder on the Orient Express?
Dunno if it's really a "book" since it's a short story collection, but I read Nine Storys by Salinger the other day.
Picked it randomly off a /lit/ Japanese literature list, actually really liked it
Am i the only one who only read VN and manga XD
>>7693719>Translated by the Japanese by John Nathan
There are like three people on /jp/ who would go "sup, X" if I posted the last book I read. Instead, I'll just report.
>>7693697Just remembered that I read 1984 and I really liked it. Another was when I was in highschool and for english we had to read lord of the flies and mice and men and I loved them both.
>>7693722
>>7693714What, because I have exams or because I found adwd boring?
Since we're at it. Which Agatha Christie novel you think is better? I have never read one of her books and its about time to start one.
>>7693735You really have to ask that on /jp/?
>>7693735The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Right now I'm reading magazine about computer games (I need to buy new computer in addition to my new HDD lol). 2 hours ago I was reading book about history of architecture styles.
2083 A European Declaration of Independence.Mainly to see what all the hubbub was about.
>>7693731The former.
The last one I finished was The Man in the High Castle, I am currently reading The Illustrated Man and a book of Celtic myths.
I hardly ever read books any more. The last one I read was probably, "And Then There Were None".
>>7693735Everything with Poirot and Hastings.
>>7693725I'm in the same situation. I've been speaking about the recent books I read on IRC.
A Canticle for Leibowitz
>>7693684When you say 'read', do you mean, out of my own volition? Because I am forced to read several textbooks every few months, but I don't necessarily want to.
I read a lot of non fiction stuff about military history and vehicles I borrow from the library, I've never really cared for novels aside from a shitload of hard sci-fi as a teenager.
Ilium and Olympos from Dan Simmons, it was pretty awesome, not as good as Hyperion mind you but reading about Achilles slaughering gods left and right was great fun. I should read Dance with Dragons soon but I can't get the motivation.Oh well I still have my eroge to finish.
I am reading now The Face of Another by Kōbō Abe, it looks good so far.
>>7693791>>7693761>>7693739Thanks a lot friends.
Probably in high school like 4 years ago, can't remember what it was.
I've only read a couple of books as an adult. well three actuallyGeorge Orwell's 1984A clock work OrangeIT by Steven KingI plan to read more books in the future, but I plan a lot of things that don't end up panning out. Regardless, I've enjoyed the books I have read
Today, The Mountains of Madness.
Almost done with Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It went to shit after Guan Yu died.
lately it seems i've been reading bits and pieces--i start intent on a book but my health worsens and when it picks up again i can no longer just pick up said book, i am drained of that magical substance of tenacity. i have been on an kenzaburo oe binge, i finished the changeling and a personal matter and have been reading a silent cry and somersault; lolita was great and i liked the overcoat so gogol by nabokov turned out to be pretty great too!!authors on my to-read-more-of list would probably be: satre, paz, borges, hemmingway (after i watched that episode of bartender about how "man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." it really got me excited about hemmingway in a way i high school didn't really reach), dh lawrence, and of course serge lang but most of all a school for fools by sokolov it feels like everything /jp/
It's been a while since I read books, but I think the last was Heike Monogatari. It makes a great drinking game; you can try it too if you want. Here are the rules: 1. Take a sip whenever a man cries, twice if he cries so much that his tears wet the sleeves of his robes. Take a swig if a large group of men are crying and their tears all wet their sleeves. 2. Take a sip whenever a samurai (or a concubine) becomes a monk (or a nun.) Twice if he threatens to be a monk but goes back on it. 3. Take a swig whenever the Emperor does something "most awesomely". 4. Take a sip whenever someone drowns. Upgrade to a swig if people drown en masse and to a shooter if it's because of their own stupidity (Let's attack those boats on our horses! We cannot lose, the Emperor favors us!)5. A swig whenever Kiyomori loses it and decides to wreck the Imperial family's shit. A shooter whenever he actually does it.6. A swig whenever the author complains about how the days of Buddhist law are ending and how the world has become corrupt. 7. A sip whenever civilian houses (and the civilians inside them) are burned to begin a confrontation. A swig if a temple is burned in the process. 8. Take a swig for every pun and misunderstanding on part of Yoshinaka. Two swigs if the author calls him boorish (but fuck the author, Yoshinaka is awesome.)
>>76943289. A sip for every poem. A swig for each reply to previously mentioned poems. Another swig if the poem earns its composer some ridiculous sobriquet (Who-gives-a-shit Chamberlain is especially notable.)10. A sip for every exile. A swig if the process of escorting the exile is given vast amounts of unnecessary detail, two swigs every time we get back to the lives of previously exiled people. 11. Take a sip for every miracle. Twice if it was prayed for beforehand (in Japan you can order and pay for miracles.) Thrice if the god personally appears and names his price. 12. A sip for every time a precedent is mentioned. Twice if the author notes that a new precedent has been set and that it's a terrible event that upset the court because innovation is the tool of the devil I guess. A swig if the precedent in question is explained in full detail, two swigs if the precedent was from China. 13. Down the whole bottle and stop for the day after the battles where Genji completely crushes the Heike forces (Kurikara, Ichi-no-Tani and finally Dan-no-Ura)It's rather crude and a few more rules can be added, but this was what I've used. Do prepare for alcohol poisoning, the first rule by itself will kill you.
Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and this week Bartleby, the Scrivener (that was a short story though)I like this guy.
Going through Vonnegut again, Cat's Cradle and God Bless You Mr. Rosewater over the last two days.
1 month ago, last part of the farseer trilogy by robin hobb, wasnt as good as I remembered it. Ive ordered Be With You from amazon which Im looking forward to reading.
a real life book? it hard as HELL 2 remember but it was prolly the great gatsby
I read Making Money a few months ago. This thread inspires to get around to finding a new book to read.Good night, sweet prince.
I read Nietzsche all day erry day.
Of Mice and Men, just before I dropped out of school.I have no drive to do anything.
>>7694357Early Nietzsche is fun to read. "Here is my philosophy! I won't give any reasoning for it, if you can't find convincing arguments to support my ideas then you don't deserve reading my exalted work. Get the fuck out of my book."It's like I'm reading /jp/.
I'm currently reading Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath from Lovecraft's complete works. The last book I've finished was Stephen King's and Peter Straub's Black House. When I'm done/bored of Lovecraft I'll read Dostoevsky's Idiot or maybe something be Nietzsche
What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures by Malcolm Gladwell.I'm just curious why no one has bothered to explore our lives as hikikomori.
I read books by Nisemidi Doronokai, Kamirenjaku Sanpei, Ueda Yuu, Mitsui Jun, Gambler, and Juan Goto, Nitta Jun, John K Pe-ta, Po-Ju, Macop, AskRay, and Oyster.
>>7694368sounds like umineko.
Finished recently: The Prague Cemetery, by Umberto Eco.Good shit, but not to everyone's taste.
>>7694368>nietzsche is /jp/mind=blownMyself, book by Ellery Queen, two months ago or so, now I am reading Dostoyevsky's Humiliated and Insulted, which is strangely NOT /jp/
Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. I always thought it would be some high-scale treaty about the themes on the title. It turned out better than I expected, being a down-to-earth tale of misery and madness, at least for now.>>7694328>>7694330You make it sound positively awesome. I may try to read it.
Last book I finished reading was "Can't be Arsed: 101 things to not do before you die" by Richard Wilson about a month ago. It concisely explains why it's pointless to do the things which every claims you must do before you die. It was a very enjoyable read, short enough to read in one sitting, and a good book to recommend to annoying faggots who go on about there 'life changing experiences.'Currently reading "Back to the Truth: 5000 of Advaita" by Dennis Waite. It examines the Hindu philosophy of Advaita, roughly meaning non-duality. It's long and quite complex in a lot of places but it's quite an interesting view of the world.
>>7694345Ok, I actually had to check, this is not funny, please don’t do it again.
Didn't really learn anything since I already what libtards were doing.
>>7694603Oh man, you got me. That was hilarious.>>7693693This is the least surprising thing Ren has ever said.
Reading more Murakami after his book about cooking spaghetti. Might read the new Kara no Kyoukai translation but I've been reading so much trashy stuff lately I think I might need a few more literary books to clean out my brain.
Last night. Shutting out the sun - How japan created it's own lost generation. Waiting for Dostoevsky's Notes from the underground too, ordered a specific cover so it's taking months to get in stock. I think the last book I read before that was No longer Human by Osamu Dazai. I read more books than VNs.
Good stuff
Started Spring Snow by Mishma the other day, Kiyoaki is such a tsuntsun
>>7694633I'm almost surprised no one's made a VN in the vein of No Longer Human, although I can feel its influence in the characterization of many a VN protagonist.
Two weeks agoWitch child
read the full unabridged moss roberts translation of romance of the three kingdomsfeels good man
Why do we always have like 50 different answers in these book threads? Kind of fishy.
Necronomicon.
>>7694668I remember reading that for an english assignment in grade 8. I also remembered that I jacked off to the cover and had to clean it off.Scary times, glad I found /jp/ when I did.
Currently into The Dark Tower by Stephen King.
I finished the first part of the Stieg Larsson Millenium trilogy today, I was going to read part 2 'The girl who played with the dragon tatto' on the beach today but thunderroar held me back.
>>7694676Don't worry, it's just the third guy giving a whole bunch of different answers to keep up the illusion.
>>7694698Don't pretend that's not you, I'm not the autist guy nor the shitposter guy so that must be you.
I'm on a Murakami binge.Just finished South of the Border, West of the Sun, going for Norwegian Wood next.
A history book called a western experience. I like reading about history.
Why aren't you fucks reading the bible? Jesus is a god tier main character, Its also the most deepest read you'll ever get, i mean it ends at the end of the world. It also has moe characters like Virgin Mary.
>>7694670Moss Roberts is the man, I actually emailed him thanking him for translating RotTK when I finished it a while ago and he responded with "yeah sure kid, you're welcome" attitude.
Haruki Murakamis A Wild Sheep Chase
a few months ago.The catcher in the rye.It was terrible. It felt like I was using a mac.
I'm reading "Forward the Foundation" by Issac Asimov right now. It's good.
I was reading Voltaire's Miracles and Idolatry the other day- I'm still not finished. Technically though, it's more of an essay than anything. The last lengthy thing I read was Othello I think.
>>7694743>It felt like I was using a mac.what?
I read the 4 Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy books and The Catcher In The Rye in under a week. The Hitchiker's Guide was fantastic, but The Catcher In The Rye was a bit disappointing. Not bad, but not as good as everyone says. I'm reading Nick Cave's The Death Of Bunny Munro now, which is really brilliant, in my opinion, and will be starting the Foundation saga by Asimov after finishing it.
A few months ago, The Wise Man's Fear. It's the second book in the King Killer Chronicles, and a very good read.
Finished reading "The Key" by Junichiro Tanizaki and I just started "The Woman in the Dunes" by Kobo Abe.Tanizaki is probably my favorite Japanese novelist.
My attention span is too short to sit down and read books. I usually just listen to audiobooks while I'm doing something completely different. It kinda sucks to both be physically lazy and have shitty concentration. The only thing I'm good for is letting my days float by sitting in a chair and doing something completely mindless.
Has anyone here read anything by Yukio Mishima? What did you think of it? I'm considering buying something by him.
A Dance with Dragons, a week or two after it came out.
a few days ago, re-reading the 10 little niggers by Agatha Christie and some Molière
A few months ago I read The Madman and the Butcher. Right now I'm reading Flames Across the Border, but I haven't felt like reading for a while.
I like how threads like these have almost no complaining despite a complete lack of relevance.Probably due to how vital it is to maintaining a sense of elitism....is what I want to say, but for reason, people are complaining.
>>7694837for some reason*
Homeland by R.A. Salvatore a few months ago. I really don't understand people who read books that aren't scifi/fantasy.
Just finshed reading John dies at the end, I liked it. Wasn't expecting it to be two books in one but it was a fun ride. Might read the new edition of American gods next.
>>7694837I prefer just reporting it.
>>7694801The Sea of Fertility is a very good series, if you buy/read anything by him it should be that
been reading japanese in mangaland 2 on the bus ride to/from work. last non-educational book i read was the making of the atomic bomb by richard rhodes. great read if you're a science geek.
>>7694843I don't understand people that read anything other than non-fiction.
>>7694860>Sea of Fertilitywhy do I get these licentious ideas
Straw DogsI just finished Story of B yesterday
>>7694907I feel sorry for you.
Just finished a long stint of Proust, and before that The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet.
>>7694925And I for you.
>>7694933But you're still here on /jp/, jobless.Did those books did you good? I think not.
>>7694936>But you're still here on /jp/, jobless.>Did those books did you good? I think not.Sorry, I am a landlord.Books really helped me to understand how to start rolling around in cash doing almost nothing.
Finished Schiller's Irrational Exuberance two days ago. Starting on Garrison's Capital Based Macroeconomics. Also, fiction gets you nowhere in life. Nonfiction imparts you with KNOWLEDGE, as Schiller actually teaches where I study.
Starting on A Song of Ice and Fire
>>7694965Please tell me what books you've been reading.
Couple days ago. Some children's books about cute animals doing cute things.
I just finished the first ranger's apprentice book today, I'm reading them with my younger cousin to get him reading books.
>>7695002I started with introductory/motivational books along the lines of stuff written by Kiyosaki and Trump. That plus business magazines like Forbes and Fortune.Once you get hooked on that real deal money stuff you naturally branch off into the field that seems most interesting. It is usually either real estate or stock/bonds trading. Sometimes it is business or investing.

Vampire Hunter D, pic related. It's funny that these books were written in the 1980s and D is so beautiful that:-Dust from his coat "sparkles darkly"-Robots are stunned by his beauty.-The laws of physics find him so gorgeous that "[the night] didn't want to bother the gorgeous youth with trivial things such as distance".-Men and women alike get the hots for him, ALL THE TIME.Compare and contrast Twilight. Also: "The countenanced carbuncle".
A real book?Pu SongLing's Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.
finished a few days ago
Just finished The brothers Karamazov, the hellbound heart, and Metamorphosis. Currently reading The hunger artist, Stoker, The House of Leaves, and Crime and Punishment.
Why is /jp/'s taste in lit so much better than their taste in japanese pop culture? Is it because no one from /jp/ is posting in this thread?
/jp/ - /lit/
>>7695210Are you a wizard?How did you know I wasn't from /jp/?
I just finished reading a book about traditional Japanese artwork, before that I reread American psycho and 1984.
>>7695222There are more unique posters in this thread than the rest of /jp/ combined.
Right now "Work your way around the world".
Photoshop CS5 for dummies
Yesterday. It was "The God Delusion". Day before that was "A Brief History of Time". Before that was a book entitled "A Brief History of Samurai". Pretty interesting books, I must say. I enjoy reading, especially since my job lets me have some idle time in between people coming in and stuff.
The Bible two days ago
Why would I spend time reading books when there are superior forms of entertainment, like video games, television, and movies?
Last month:Guild Wars: Edge of Destiny.I liked it.
I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books right now for nostalgia reasons. Downloaded Stephen Fry's audio read-throughs too, so I kinda switch between reading a chapter and listening to one.I'm currently halfway through the Goblet of Fire.
>>7695259You haven't read many good books then.
This thread is lies...I haven't read a book since I was 15.
Stayed up until six this morning reading Ghost Story.Nice having a kindle.
Was going to grab copies of The Brothers Kazmarov and Crime and Punishment from the library as I noticed they had gotten several new copies of them to replace their old stolen copies. But then I remembered new book borrowing duration is two weeks, and I wouldn't be able to read either in 2 weeks because /jp/ won't refresh itself after all.
The Heart of Darkness last month
>>7695315I hope you didn't pay for that bookMaybe its just bias but eBooks just seem so freaking retarded
I just finished "Xenocide" by Orson Scott Card and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K Dick.
>>7695311http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKLJqk-THCQ
>>7695329You can get a ton of free books with any e-reader even without piracy.
It was a great read 10/10.
The Digging Leviathan by James Blaylock.
I re-read like 5 Murakami books in a row. Thinking about reading some wittgenstein now.
This book suggests you rub asses with a woman.I like this book
You can stop pretending now, guys.
>>7695349If someone has a download link for an ebook of that, I'd be grateful.I need it for, uh, research purposes. Yeah.

Brothers KazamarovAmerican Psycho Canticle for Lebiowitzand Candide
John Grisham's A Time to Kill.
the surprise of suzumiya haruhi - 15 minutes ago.
I try every night to read short pieces in the languages that I'm learning (Latin, Greek, Sanskrit) and something in English. Missed last night. Right now it's Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War, Xenophon's Memorabilia, Hitopadesha, and Gödel, Escher, Bach, respectively.
>>7695478this owns
I haven't finished a book in months.Last book I tried to get into was Revelation Space. Read about... a third of it, maybe close to half, and I realized I wasn't really enjoying it. None of the characters were particularly interesting and the plot didn't really strike a chord with me.
>>7693684God is Not Great.
Good Luck Yukikaze
>>7695478>Gödel, Escher, BachThis book was fucking great. The Zeno interludes are entertaining. Before I got arrested, I finished The Illuminatus! trilogy and a collection of Lovecraft tales, IN jail I read a lot of garbage, and now that I've been out, I finished Wee Free Men.
on a plane flight last week, I read 'Invitation to a Beaheading' by Vladamir Nabokov.
Bag of Bones by Stephen King.
>>7695860Fuck, I need to read that. First one was pretty cool.
Started reading Foundation last night.
The last book I actually read... I think it was the Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Can't say for certain though, it's been awhile.
>>7695913Fuck yeah, I love that series.
>>7695860>>7695879Any chance of me getting a download link? It's fucking nowhere.
>>7695880I've never found a bad Asimov book. His non-fiction is highly informative (though considerably dated). It's an interesting look into what Science was working on in the era that he wrote. He also has two books of joke and limerick compilations, interspersed with funny personal anecdotes, and a book of interesting random facts.
>>7695932I bought a hard copy of the first, and will buy the next when I can.
I finished No Longer Human yesterday. Despite that, I almost never read. There's always some game I want to play instead.
Last book I read was Brave New World.I've read lots of Science Fiction, like Ringworld, 1984 and The Foundation series.I own the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series and read various non-fiction science books.I've also strayed from Science Fiction, and have read the Spice and Wolf novels, The Art of War, and Lolita. And I like having books like the Necronomicon.
Is "Ghost Story" the same as Bakemonogatari?
Reading is for faggots.
The Karamazov Brothers, 8 months agoIt was such a terrible, painful read that it put me off reading books entirely. But I finished it.
Last book I read was Devils' Due by Christine Golden.
The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. And today I just started Spice and Wolf Volume 1, the English translation by Yen Press. I'm gearing up to translate volume 6 and want to keep consistent with the voice the Yen Press translator uses.

>>7696006Whats it like being part of a secret society?
>>7695933Asimov was an awesome author in general. He treated writing like a 9 to 5 job and wrote constantly during that time. His book covering all the Shakespeare plays got me through high school English with no studying at all.
>>7696003Yen Press will be releasing vol 6 in about 11 months. Think you'll have the translation done by then, and are you just doing it to challenge yourself or something?
>>7696037I'm planning on having it done by Christmas, and then do a volume every month after that. It's partly a challenge to myself and partly to help out S&W fans stuggling with no new material.
>>7696041That's wonderful. Do you have a blog or anything so that I can keep track of you?
>>7696044No, not yet. I'm waiting until I have material to post before I make one. I was already planning to pester /a/ about it in a few months, but I'll make a thread on /jp/ too.

World War Z by Max Brooks

>>7693684

Actual book? Finished the Years of Rice and Salt over the weekend and start Game of Thrones after thatManga? I read Kannagi V1 and Railgun V1 today
About two weeks ago. I read a compilation of essays by Gilbert K. Chesterton. I didn't like how it alluded to religion so much, but it's understandable.
>>7696074I enjoyed some parts and flat out skipped others due to how boring they were. The one about the little girl having to eat another human to survive during the cold was my favorite. Been years since I read either of Brook's books.
Just so you know, magical fantasy and science fiction is Harry Potter/Twilight level. If you're wasting your life reading that shit you might as well not read at all. It'll save you some time.
Half a year ago. I don't even remember the title. As much as I'd like to get back into reading, I'm much to glued to my computer to do anything else without it anymore. I'm a the point that even playing console games undisturbed from the computer is an accomplishment.
>>7696131Your opinion isnt worth shit. Keep it to yourself. On another note its been a long time since I read something that wasnt a cientific paper. College kills your mind...
I read a lot of Lovecraft,Phillip K Dick, and J. R. R. Tolkien, right now I picked up Sacred Evil-supposed to be a woman's book I guess? but it is about Jack the Ripper so~meh I'll try it.also got "The postcard killers" by James Patterson and Liza Marklund.I read a whole lot....

I haven't read a book in about a year. My brain is probably completely rotten from playing too many games and doing other silly things but I don't really care anymore.

A couple months ago. The Empress, by Karen Miller.
