At the moment I'm tempted to look at 4chan X over 4chan Plus which is what I'm currently using. Along with the Shift_JIS art script.

OP here. What are the differences between them?

Also I use the "official" 4chan extension with my FF. It's been having some compatibility issues since the guy who made it takes a long time to update to the current FF version (if at all). I didn't like 4chan X. If anything I prefer 4chan Plus, I got it on my laptop with Chrome on it and it's really nice. Too bad there's no report button though.

4chan grab works up to FF5. If you're using 4chanX disable the expander or just disable greasemonkey (it's faster to just click the GS toolbar/statusbar button) for the thread and refresh it before grabbing.

firefox has a slim 2ch browser and customizable search bar plugins (allows to choose 10+ different search engines with just a click on the icon, and has right click integration so you can look shit up without copying and pasting), rather than having to type random shit I can't be assed to remember before the search terms.
So latest Firefox for me, though it's not like I was dissatisfied with Chrome, it's just that I like some of the Firefox extensions better.

Zooming with ImageZoom (rightclick+scroll) on an expanded image in reply posts, the width reaches a point where it cannot expand anymore resulting in a vertically stretched image. I can't seem to override this because the width limit imposed is an inline style attribute on the image's tag (style priorities).

So, can we use this thread to recommend each other Firefox add-ons for our /jp/ related habits? I have two I want to speak up for, which have significantly improved my browsing experience, and I hope you guys have some others which will help me further.

FireGestures. Bind "change to tab on the left" to a straight line to the left, and right for tab on the right. Makes it extremely easy to flip through tabs quickly, without having to click each tab. Other functions I recommend gestures for is close tab, reload and scroll to top/bottom. But the most important one is save image, I have that bound to a single line down. Combine this with Automatic Save Folder (setting all image files to be automatically saved to whatever folder you save images in), and you'll be go through images in multiple tabs and save them really quickly.

The other is Scroll Search Engines, which finally motivated me to start using the search bar. Lets you just mouse over the search bar and scroll with the scroll wheel to change engines, or when highlighting a word. Not particularly revolutionary, but it's nice when someone is talking about an eroge I haven't heard about yet, I can just highlight the name in his post, scroll to VNDB, and automatically get a new tab searching for the name in VNDB. Or when browsing DLsite, I can do the same to check if it's in my favorite hash database. Add to Search Bar is needed to, should go without saying. And I also like Searchbar Autosizer, since it adds an option to empty the search field after searching for something, something which has always annoyed me when I search through typing something in.

There's an idea I want to propose. When you're in a thread and want to post without referring to a post number, you have two options:
    1. Going to the top and replying the normal way, which is annoying, since it reloads the page and marks your post in the URL, unlike quick reply.
    2. Click a post number to open quick reply, and remove the post number, which is annoying, since it adds an extra step to making a post.

So, could you add some button somewhere that lets you open quick reply within a thread, without clicking a post number?

I prefer using my keyboard. Seems a lot more convenient.
    ctrl+tab next tab
    ctrl+shift+tab previous tab
    ctrl+w close tab
    space and shift+space scrolling
    ctrl+s save image

The search engine one seems unnecessary. You can add keywords to any search box in Firefox. Just rightclick a search box and choose "Add a keyword for this search".
After that you can search anything from the address bar via "<keyword> <search terms>", e.g. "vn little busters" for a vndb search on my keyword settings.
Combine this with alt+D to focus on the address bar and searching becomes fast and easy.

Though it won't give you the mouseover search, I'll give you that.

I'm confident that my method is much quicker. And it frees up a hand I could use on more productive things, like fapping (seriously, that's an extremely common thing to want to do when you're saving images).

I honestly didn't know about the keyword function, though. That's quite useful too. I think I'll use that for search engines that I don't need the highlighting function for, or simply don't use that often, like thesaurus.com.

    >Yes, I have FX5 installed, with ABP, Scriptish and stylish and memory always hovers around 400-500MB after some hours of browsing with one tab
I have the same extensions, use 3-4 tabs on average and it never goes above 250mb here, maybe the problem is not firefox'

RAM is cheap as dirt nowadays.
For me browsing is not a race but a long-term travel, so I put comfort over the speed. I have both browsers installed and they are both fine. Chrome is more light-weighted but I haven't stacked it with addons, so not sure about real memory consumption. Firefox users should be careful with extension obsession, some addons are badly written, and eat a lot of RAM and slow down page processing. With tuned setup I dont see much difference in terms of speed between FF and Chrome.

Nightly is more lightweight and a lot faster even with basic addons.
Maybe Canary puts up a good fight, I don't know...

Ram is cheap when your motherboard has DDRII or DDRIII slots.

I won't waste 25% of my unemployment payment (50-60 euros) to buy 2x1GB DDR sticks (only 2 slots on motherboard).

It doesn't matter what the underlying fault is. If other browsers don't have it, it's YOUR problem.

You have a typical Linux mentality. That is why it will never become big.

    >>7662496
As >>7662461 said it maybe a problem with some addon(s), so of course other browser may not have it, because it doesn't have this addon.

    >>7662496
Other browsers did have it as well, I'm not stupid enough to use a browser with that large of a fault even if it's my own.
And I fixed it shortly after by doing a full system reinstall and upgrading to FX4 (Being scared to use nightly for some reason). The problem didn't affect chromium either after that.

I don't get what you mean by Linux mentality... Fix it yourself we won't help you shit? Or what?

Chrome has multi-processing, Firefox doesn't which makes the whole browser hang if one tab hang. Unless you have only a single core/threaded processor.

Firefox is faster in opening tabs and printing, Chrome is faster in rendering and javascript.

I personally benchmarked Chrome dev, Firefox 5, Nightly 32 and 64bit and Opera Next.
    I opened 400+ bookmarks,
Chrome and Opera Next had about the same RAM usage, Chrome was more responsive thanks to multi-processing.
Nightly 64bit's RAM usage kept growing thanks to memory leaks and was barely usable.
Firefox 5 and Nightly 32 bit both crashed because of the memory limitation.

I mean pushing the problem to the (truthfully) original cause. Although everyone realizes it SHOULD actually be fixed by the other guy who maintains his code that's giving the problem, in real life this usually means the application has a bug that won't get fixed.

It's Linux mentality, because if you take the end-user in mind first of all, you'll make a workaround for what is not 'your' bug.
    >> Anonymous 07/25/11(Mon)18:28 No.7662552
    >>7662528
Oh so it's a multithread and 64bit issue? I stick with nightly32 and have a single core.
I never have more than 100 or so tabs open so everything works fine. Never passing 500MB in extreme cases and staying responsive the entire time.
    >> !MayhemxaEo 07/25/11(Mon)18:33 No.7662565
    >>7662552
It's more of a memory leak issue, but as long as you don't have more 100 tabs you shouldn't have any problems.

I also forgot to mention in >>7662528, Chrome is supposed to be more stable, thanks to multi-processing again, and more secure.
    >> Anonymous 07/25/11(Mon)18:34 No.7662570
    >>7662528
Well, never care about browser benchmarks. It is just for marketing stuff. Even if one browser is few ms faster with processing of 9000 JS lines it doesn't matter irl. Try both browsers: browse your common sites, check extensions etc. then stick with one you feel is more convenient.

Stability: I never have issues with FF (and Chrome as well). Maybe I use them wrong and dont open 500+ tabs, but I dont think that sane user will get any problem.

Security: Highly arguable stuff. Really, the biggest security is you own head - don't open fishy links, use no script and you will be safe. Both browser do fine in terms of protection, can see any huge advantage here.

And you forgot about Google spying after the Chrome users, and collect data about their actions. If you want give advices don't be one-sided.

That's been optional from the start, and completely anonymous either way. And it's not spying when they tell the users about it. Just saying.
