472 KB For those who want to draw Anonymous 03/29/10(Mon)15:02 No.4758236
After pretty much most of the weekend drawing with some /jp/ hikkis on flockdraw I can pretty much tell that most of /jp/ wants to learn to draw but they feel that they can't.

Now I'm no art master or even art student, I just doodle. I can pass on some advice. First of all if you honestly down to earth want to learn to draw, the first thing to do is just draw. That's the first step. It can be anything you want, drawing pictures of touhous or still life. The first step is to just draw what you see. Pay close attention to what you are drawing and its relation to other parts on the picture. That touhou, where is her collar in relation to her hip? Think about the picture and use landmarks to help you draw.

Follow this first step and within a few months you will start to see some serious progress. If you do it religiously even less.

If you would like some good instrutions on learning to draw I would suggest Andrew Loomis - Fun with a Pencil. Following this book will teach you one of the most important aspects of art: the simplifcation of shapes. It also teachs you many other techniques that are helpful.

Honestly keep at it no matter what you do. When I first started I would give up and say I had no talent (I skipped art classes at school, bad idea) but now I can pretty much draw what I like. If you can spend an hour a day drawing or even 30 minutes.

And remember drawing is really enjoyable when you are drawing what you like. Even anime.

TLDR: Draw smart, work hard, earn skill

If I had started drawing when I first wanted to learn to start drawing, I would have been drawing for over a decade now. I probably won't start drawing now either because I'm just not willful enough, I am a loser and will always be a loser.

Lose the loser mentally Anon. Just try to find something you really like to draw. Copying is totally fine, it's tracing that is the enemy you should stay away from. Also don't push your self for it to be perfect just try to relax and enjoy yourself.

My problem is I never finish anything. I don't think I've ever actually finished a picture. Its like, I know I could finish it, but I've already got all I can out of it so I stop.

    Feels bad, man.

Every time I try to draw something I give up right away after some traces, because it's looking awful. I know that I shouldn't simply stop and should just keep drawing, but it's so hard to keep going forward like that.

Stay away from tracing if you can. You will grow faster drawing it from eye. Also don't be afraid to rub it out 15 million times. When I first started I did a small drawing which took hours and I used the rubber alot, but when it was finished damn I was proud.

    >>4758295

I get that feeling some times but I just grind through it. I'm not really too sure how to help you with that. Mabye you aren't drawing something enjoyable? I know when I'm doing studies I get bored really damn fast.

Ah, it's annoying though, the problem with doodling, is you do it (..or at least I do it) whenever you could between something 'important'. Math classes and the like.

Now, with virtually unlimited time do draw anything, (Virtually a NEET here) I find it difficult to bring myself to draw anything, too busy now distracting myself from drawing (which had been a distraction from working) with MMOs mindless banter on IRC and listlessly browsing the chans..

And it always aggravating. So much crap bottled up in my head I want to draw, and I have difficulty getting it down on paper.

    Any suggestion for that?

I had this problem before. Try to focus on slowly copying the lines of whatever you're drawing. Try to make the lines curve the same way. Take it very slow. Also, try copying something simple like this image.

Willpower. Try to stay away from distractions and just focus on a single task. You have the want you just need to apply it.

Something that might help you if you have a graphics tablet is drawing with the other hikkis on flockdraw. Right now it's being trolled by eraser-kun and he shows no signs of letting up.

I wish I had your mentality, OP. I tell myself everyday to just start doing it and work at it even if I realize at first it will suck, but I just can't. The thought that I will fail and will never be able to make anything decent cripples me completely. I collect images as references and study what I like about them and how they must've drawn it, and how you could reproduce an effect, etc. but I just cannot bring a pencil to paper. I've been doing this for over 5 years now and I'm still sitting here not getting any further. I just never feel "ready" for it and I probably never will.

I have used Photoshop in the past, though I have no interest at all in shopping images (I know some people can make good shops, it just doesn't interest me enough to create them). I've thought of colouring what others have drawn but I don't like it, it just doesn't feel like it's my own (because it's not, obviously). What I have done in the past is: someone made a sketch for me, I inked it in Flash and then did (shitty) shading in PS. I have in the past doodled sketches of very basic cartoon characters but anything more complex always looked horrible. By now I have too much doubt that I could ever become decent that it stops me from doing anything at all.

It also doesn't help that my room is a mess, my desk is a mess, my computer is a complete mess and my head is a mess also.

I have three tips, since I was basically in the same boat for a long time:

1-Only draw things you like (whether that be touhou or whatever). This way your drawing will have some meaning to you even if it's ugly.

2-Draw very simple images and only copy images when you first start out. This way you can see some success and understand what you're doing wrong much more quickly ( something like "huh, there isn't enough room for the eyes, I guess I made the face smaller than it was supposed to be".)

3-Listen to music that you really enjoy while drawing. This makes any task more enjoyable, so it'll help you get the urge to start.

Thanks, yes I should start with simple things first, and I actually do tell myself that there will be failure and I shouldn't be disheartened by it. Actually, accepting failure and that it doesn't mean that if you failed once you have completely failed or will keep failing is something I'm trying to learn. Same with that I need to tell myself I don't have to finish things in one go, that some things take a while and that, regrettably, not everything will end up perfect.

I listen to music a lot, but I get distracted by it when doing work, so I usually don't do anything except maybe casually browse while listening to music.

Pretty much what everyone is saying here, just draw and you'll eventually get better eventually.

I started off with heads and I've mostly got that sorted now, but I'm moving onto bodies and I'm back to being absolute crap.

Doesn't mean I'll stop, I'm starting to practice drawing them as well (although if anyone has any tips I won't complain..)

I've always thought about improving my drawing skills. But I want to know if there's a disadvantage to not taking any art classes. All of my art have been self taught or through observations, but I've never had the chance to properly learn how to color, shade, or tone things correctly. Looking at myself now, my drawings have improved, but not in the direction and pace I want it to be at.

I want to restart all of that so where should I begin? How many hours a day should I practice? Which fundamentals are the most important to learn and master first before going on to the advanced parts?
Should I even bother with color, or just stick with black and white/pencil tones?
