May the merciful gods, if indeed there be such, guard those hours when no power of the will, or drug that the cunning of man devises, can keep me from the chasm of sleep. >>But it's painfully obvious they haven't touched anything Lovecraft

Why would this even matter? Saya no Uta even had the same exact "Lovecraftian" themes used in countless other games and films.
    >> Anonymous 03/05/10(Fri)03:22 No.4547436
Turning Saya into a comic is really just a bad idea in general. What carries it is the kind of uniquely horrifying imaginings that the prose generates in the mind of the reader, and by giving the reader much more visual basis for the story totally destroys that. Saya no Uta's main advantages as a VN are creepy music and ominous backgrounds, with only the occasional character shot or super close up of something terrible to unnerve the reader.

Maybe, but I think to anyone who isn't a 15 year old saya no uta wasn't scary in the slightest maybe a little disturbing, but disturbing can certainly be established while seeing the whole picture hence, probably, why the comic is drawn so grimdark.

The main attraction to the story was suspense and romance, which we're already ruined to because we've finished the story and know the ending, so we can hardly be critics of this.

Nitro+, wants to break into the US market very, VERY badly. This is their strategy, as opposed to, you know, releasing their stuff on a wider scale.

    >>4547327

Comics are usually paced better than this. I'm pretty sure Saya no Uta got a 2 shot comic because IDW did not believe that the comic would succeed, and they're probably right.

And that makes it suffer the most, that and the authors' apparent inability to realize that SnU is a Lovecraftian story.

I think the story needed at least a 4 parter, like what most mini comic stories get. That and people who know not to blow their load in the first fucking issue.

    Oh great... now that... sucked.

Of course Saya wouldn't be a loli...

Oh well let's not focus on that. The characters are plain and the pacing is fast, also the art is... distracting. Saya is supposed to be beautiful and pure, not a whoreish teenager. Meh. But yeah the last page ruined it all, it at least had somewhat of a quality until then. Guess we'd better just forget this exists.

    >>authors' apparent inability to realize that SnU is a Lovecraftian story.

Once again, this doesn't make sense. All modern horror tends to have Lovecraft themes, but there isn't a specific set of rules that must be followed or anything.

Nitro+ was probably inspired more by Western horror films (back when they were still good) than Lovecraft himself. This would also explain their reverse-wapanese ways.

"Lovecraftian horror is a sub-genre of horror fiction which emphasizes the psychological horror of the unknown (in some cases, unknowable) over gore or other elements of shock, though these may still be present."

Absolutely nothing is left unknown in this comic, in contrast to the original game, which refrained from showing you a full-screen CG of Saya's true form a third of the way in and- like Lovecraft in many of his stories- emphasized that the sight is so horrific it causes humans who witness it to lose their grip on sanity.

It's not just a matter of tact; it's hubris to think you can depict a creature that would drive somebody mad from the mere sight of it.

Your words ring true. The creature they showed in this comic, while certainly looking disturbing, is way off from actually instilling horror in the reader. It just looks plain too normal by today's stadnards. We've just seen too many things, especially with modern movies and computer animations. The thrill of leaving it unkown and just describing it worked much much better IMO.

I don't know what I imagined Saya's true form like, but definitely not like that and I certianly hope I don't lose my original image. This is what I dislike about movies, they overwrite your original image you had while reading the book. Though I guess a visual novel is the wrong thing to place that claim on.

Anyways, my point is that in this time where we have been shown everything, a thing unshown has a lot more impact.

Honestly, I feel the "horror of the unknown" for SnU is the usual theme where the main character doesn't know why bad/strange things are happening to him. And of course when he finally uncovers the truth he's then eventually destroyed by it in some way.

Saya wasn't the real monster anyways; the humans were. Best overused but still enjoyable horror theme ever.

Lovecraftian stuff was "Unbelievable" horror back in the twenties. It's rather silly to think those things are that disturbing to a modern individual in the first place, humanity is too jaded and desensitized.

I think it's better if it's not so much there physical form, so much as there mind warping abilities that would drive people insane. Because really, there's nothing an average modern human can be driven insane by simply looking at them. Grossed out, disgusted, yes, but we are far different from the humanity of eighty years ago.

Because you know that gravity will not allow this, homeostasis will not allow that. The chemical balance in the air won't support. The gravity won't allow. The skeletal stucture isn't designed for any practical use at all, yet it moves like a ballerina. It's wrong. You see something and you instinctively know it's "wrong". What you've learned and experienced in life tells you "this should not exist, how is it possible?" Nagging little notes that start gnawing at your psyche until you can actually feel your skin crawl.

Take something like Lotus Tit. Amplify that sensation 100 times over. Then multiply that by 1,000. That is essentially what the freakout is supposed to be about.

That would be like adapting the Sixth Sense into a comic and having the main character be transparent and phase through a wall or something in the first chapter.

But that's an actual spoiler that people wouldn't know straight away. I'm pretty sure almost everyone guessed that Saya wasn't exactly human as soon as she appeared on screen even without knowing anything before reading it. I did, anyway. Either way it wasn't supposed to be surprising that she wasn't human.
