  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows. Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in 24-48 hours. Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

God damn I hate Ramen. But I still eat it because it costs 10 cents a bag and I'm a fucking poor as hell college student.

How the hell do you guys eat this crap? Is there something you add to it so it's not just a bowl of slimy salty noodles? Also, fuck the stuff in a cup that comes with the dehydrated peas and carrots, that's even worse. And I'm sure as hell not heading out to buy "real" ramen with the whole lot of extra bits in it, and spiral thingers. That's just spending more money on still awful noodles.

I eat 'super noodles', curry flavour, and I assume they're similar. I eat them because they're cheap as fuck, and easy to make to make. Three minutes in the microwave with some hot water, and I'm set for the day.

Well, it seems we've broken through the illusion that anyone eats ramen noodles for any reason other than the fact that they're cheap as hell.

I happen to like instant ramen. Funny thing is, it's actually more expensive than some of the meals you can prepare yourself.

I add a bit of margarine or oil to it. Fat helps to bring out the taste. Also tomato sauce. But I do that because I make my noodles with a lot more water than the usual amount. Your mileage may vary.

$2 a week is impossible in any western nation, unless you're getting handouts from shelters and food banks.

$15 for 1 week is easily doable if you're an average sized person. A fair sized bag of rice, a dozen eggs, some frozen vegetables, a loaf of bread can be had around my way for about $10. That leaves $5 for other cheap minor items such as beans.

Impossible - as in you would not survive.

The human body can survive 3 days without water (which is freely available even if you don't pay your bills, at water fountains and such in almost every developed nation.

The human body can also survive with NO food for a week straight. This also means that you can survive on barely anything and/or complete shit daily (shit thats not even worth a dollar) without having any sort of risk of death.

It is 'impossible' to say it is impossible to live without bread, eggs, rice, and all that shit, unless you're a complete moron - then again you are anon, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Unlike the idea in the thread - I actually have money and don't need to eat garbage to survive.

My point is that the human body can and will survive on that amount of money and it is far from impossible. You're the one missing the point - as 'sustainable' does not mean 'comfortably and healthily live' it means at the very worst - survive.

The human body can easily - painfully and unhealthily sure, but it CAN sustain you for a prolonged time (for fucking ever, not including sicknesses and such you may get easier due to your health) as long as you stay hydrated (water every 3 days at the very least) and have a few scraps a week.

You don't even NEED ramen every day - you could live off of eating it 2 times a week. You won't DIE.

You'd be fucked up - but you would not die.

Sustainable does not mean comfortable - don't use words you don't understand.

2 packs of ramen is 800 calories a week. Are you for fucking real? Are you that stupid or just that desperate to troll? You'd be dead in 60 days max, a normal person without stores of body fat sooner. IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. 1 month is not "sustainable"

    >burden of proof

The problem is I don't care if you believe me or not - so I need not prove anything.

The ones claiming I'm wrong are actually the ones with the burden of proof - as you are trying to disprove what I said. This isn't Umineko and real discussions don't work the way they do in some little picture book you read. If you want to keep claiming I am wrong then it's your job to prove I'm wrong, not mine to prove I am right.

Again - it is not my duty to prove my point, it's yours to prove me wrong since you are so vehemently claiming I'm not correct.

Not my job to prove otherwise - as I know I'm right. I don't need to prove to myself that I'm right.

The one disagreeing with someone is the one who has to prove their point correct so that the one who says "this is true" and is supposedly wrong will realize "wow you were right"

So stop telling me to prove myself right, I know I am, I need no proof of that.

If you want to prove to me that I am incorrect, you better start doing what you suggested to me and prove to me that you won't last.

So sorry, but because you are not CurryButt !CIELBE/jzM you aren't in the position to not prove yourself. I clearly explained why I will not explain myself - but you are Anonymous and so you must follow your beliefs, those beliefs are that if you are 'right' you must prove it.

The argumentum ad ignorantiam is committed whenever it is argued that a proposition is true simply on the basis that it has not been proven false, or that it is false because it has not been proven true. A qualification should be made at this point. In some circumstances it can be safely assumed that if a certain event had occurred, evidence of it could be discovered by qualified investigators. In such circumstances it is perfectly reasonable to take the absence of proof of its occurrence despite searching, as positive evidence towards its non-occurrence. - Copi 1953

How many calories per day do you need to survive?

Between 1500 and 2500, but see below.

This depends on your mass and necessary activity level, since each unit of mass ( kilograms, or whatever you wish) requires calories to both remain living and to function at a given level (for example, muscle tissue or your brain).

Setting aside the important point of what the calories consist of (vitamins, minerals, etc.), an average American female (5'4", 164 lbs) needs just under 1500 calories per day for a very sedentary existence (i.e., just surviving WHILE maintaining the SAME MASS).

The typical American male (5'9 1/2", 191 lbs) would need 2430 calories daily to survive or "Maintain".

To just stay alive, it really becomes a matter of how many calories below these numbers each day and how long the reduced calories are endured.

For example, reducing the calorie intake by 500 per day would reduce the body mass by about 2 kilos per month, or 1 lbs per week (all things remaining equal).

Once body fat reduces drastically, the remaining portions of the body would be consumed by the most vital organs/systems until enough damage occurred to cause cardiac arrest directly (likely), or contraction of a common illness which would in the body's weakened condition lead to other complications and death (more likely).

Rice and vegetables both have protein; vegetables have calcium. Most Americans eat way more protein than they need. Countries that consume the most dairy also have the highest rates of osteoporosis, so it's not like chugging milk actually makes your bones stronger.

Many societies live on mainly carbs and vegetables, with meat as a condiment or side dish. They end up with much lower rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Somehow Americans have the idea that carbs=evil and you can never have too much protein.

A stereotypical overfed first world person probably really needs those calories at his current metabolism rate. That does not mean someone who's used to lower calorie intake cannot sustain himself on said lower levels. Human body can adapt to a lot. Not everything, of course, but in the long run, what you really necessarily need is a small percentage of what average citizen of your country burns every day.

You can slow down your metabolism by gradually reducing calories, and eventually be able to survive on much less than what a normal person could. It's hilarious that there's so many people trying to "speed up their metabolism" when the truth is that a fast metabolism is indicative of an inefficient system and people who actually have them don't live as long as they would otherwise. It's like wishing your car got 1 mpg.
Look up calorie restriction; it's way too extreme for most people but it will be interesting to see what it can do once they've done more human studies.

A 180 pound male burns 617 calories a day on body functions while sleeping the recommended 8 hours a day.

If you slept 24 hours a day and kept your body at the bare minimum levels thats over 1800 calories a day.

2 bags of ramen a day, let alone a week will not provide you with 1800 calores a day. If your body doesn't have the energy it needs, it shuts down and you die.

I've heard a lot of people complain that they're fat because they can't afford to buy healthy food, or that it takes too much time to cook so they just eat junk food.

It really doesn't take that much effort to eat healthy. You can cook rice, frozen vegetables, eggs, and tons of other stuff with just a microwave, and it doesn't really take more time than heating up one of those microwave dinners. If you have a stove you can make your own soup and freeze it in individual portions for convenience. There's plenty of options for cheap, healthy, convenient food if you just do some research and experiment a little to find something you like.

That's not how burden of proof works. Just because you can't be bothered, and are sure that you are right, doesn't exclude you from it. Otherwise you just have two sides saying,
    "I'm sure I'm right."
    "Well, I'm more sure."
    "I'm the surest!"
    "Nuh-uh, I am!".

And so on. Now, the reason why you are the one expected to provide evidence to your claims is due to the fallacy of demanding negative proof. To put it simply, X is not proven simply because "not X" has not (or even cannot) be proven. Since you are the one making a bold, positive claim (you can survive on such a low number of calories), it is your responsibility to provide something to warrant that claim.
