  • Since I've been on a Q&A kick in /a/ and /r9k/ recently, I've decided to set up a formspring account for publicly answering 4chan related questions. You'll find it linked in the navbar as "?", and located here: formspring.me/4chan. Also, if you use Twitter, please follow @4chan. As always, I can be contacted via e-mail at moot@4chan.org (Despite the common misconception, I check it frequently and read every message I receive. Nobody seems to e-mail me about anything other than being banned though ;_;)

/jp/, I'm not understanding all the fascination with Touhou. Everytime I come to /jp/, there is always threads about touhou. I have tried playing it but couldn't get far because text was in japanese(of course, its a japanese game). Please fill me in.

    Shmups are shit.
    >> Anonymous 02/25/10(Thu)00:16 No.4480710
The games themselves really aren't all that good.
    >> Anonymous 02/25/10(Thu)00:18 No.4480726
Find the translation patches. There should be links to them in your local Touhou Wiki. Even then, Touhou is one of those things where if you don't like it now, you might not ever like it.

The massive amount of fanwork for it. Seriously there's a lot of it. The Japanese fanbase for touhou is quite possibly the most productive fanbase in history.

The plots are usually really simple, spiced with some character dialogues. Majority of the stuff comes from fans.

The games are more music and action driven.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of the music that came from the series. And, interestingly enough, I liked it.

I recommend starting with Touhou 8. It's a lot more forgiving for people new to the series, and the early levels won't bore you to tears like th6 could.

Ok. I guess I'm going to be up all night playing Touhou now that I can get the eng translations. Haha! Is the series sequential? Like if I jump into 8, will I be missing anything from the others?

Play the games in whatever order you choose. There's no ongoing plot, or anything like that.

Warning: A year ago, I was like you, having just started my first Touhou game. If this series grabs you, it's going to grab you HARD.

    Enjoy :)
