So /jp/, be honest with me for a sec.
How many of you have either attempted or are currently writing up a Visual Novel due to a stroke of inspiration?
Come on, you can level with me. I know someone here is whipping something together. I'm tryin' and tearing my hair out myself.

Pic semi-related. BlazBlue's story mode is a VN if I've ever seen one and my /jp/ folder is incredibly light these days.

Well, I aced my literature classes so I guess that I am not that bad of a writer.
I also know a bit of programming and I am capable of writing(in a programming sense) my own game and/or VN engines.
No one would wan't to read/play anything with my current level of art though, so I haven't really bothered that much.

I could always get someone else to do the art needed but I haven't really bothered, besides I like to follow my own pace and I do have other hobbies besides programming and writing.
I guess I will do something sometime though, and I guess that I could always try to adapt one of my written novels (You know one of those things written for books) into some kind of VN-ish thing.

I've changed it up more recent. Decided to give it a 1984 theme. The government had actually isolated the city (and many others) and is currently using the population for mind control and other experiments.

One of the endings I envisioned was for the main character to escape on a old train, only to arrive to the next city and find it abandoned.

Also wanted to toss in a few of these bad boys lurking around in the shadows as agents for the government.

Ofcourse the person playing the game things it's all supernatural events till the very end.

I wouldn't really call it "Reinventing" but at least I would use my own written software over Renpy and Onslaught and the likes anyday.
Using my own software/engine gives me a sense of freedom not present If should have used one of the other engines.
I am able to re-write or re-shape my own software anytime I want, which comes in handy if I would ever feel like implementing something not commonly seen in "standard" VNs such as obscure gameplay or whatnot.

I'm somewhat considering making a visual novel. I can't draw at all, but I could probably compose some decent music. The problem is the script. I have an idea of what I want to do thematically and have some good ideas for characters, but I can't think of an intriguing premise for the life of me.

I always wondered why everyone only talks about making a VN or doujin.

If there are so many writefags out there, and judging from the drawthreads, quite a few drawfags on here too, why not settle for making a light novel? It would also eliminate the problem of having lazy artists pull out since you'd only need a few illustrations, and the writefags would provide the rest.

I'm a half year off from finishing a degree in computer science, and can work competently in six languages (and less so in several others). I would hesitate before even considering beginning of preliminary design to a VN engine.

There's no point unless you can do something that includes all useful features of an existing engine AND includes features that would be nearly impossible to add to an existing engine. Considering Ren'Py supports Python, the latter condition is pretty unlikely just taking that as a sample.

I am visited by impressions more than ideas. Try as I might, the impressions rarely congeal into anything concrete enough to get drafting about.

I still do entertain the occasional fantasy about actually pushing something out that will convey these impressions in an organized and remotely interesting fashion, but I am aware that they are fantasies.

Yeah well that's a given, but it'd be far more do-able than a VN (where you'd need programmers, musicians and plenty of, or a very dedicated drawfag) or a doujin (which would have an even larger problem with getting drawfags on board, and keeping them on board). I'm guessing one of the reasons nobody is doing this is because people wouldn't be interested in something that is 90% text and 10% images, but it's worth a shot if anyone is willing.

Eh, it's not really that much work, because everything but the writing is pretty much modular. A writer with no programming skill at all can still make a story in Ren'Py and hey! It's a kinetic novel. Then he can worry about art or music. He can even do all programming himself if it's no more complicated than a game like Tsukihime. Or even Kagetsu Tohya (if he's very good at thinking in flowcharts).

If he can write a light novel, then he can write a scenario for a kinetic novel, and vice versa. There's no essential difference. One of them is just seen as more fun because more can be added to it, and because it poses as a game.

    >Ren'Py supports Python
Oh yeah, I had actually forgotten that.
But I am capable of writing such things.
This isn't just speculation, but something I know that I am capable of.
I have worked with people and written such things before and I know that I am capable of doing it myself as well.

But it is ok if you don't believe me, looking at this thread now, I must say that it was a kind of a pointless thing to discuss.

There are many different fields within programming, and while it may be true that by being good in one you automatically becomes better in other fields as well due to it raising your overall programming level, but this doesn't change the fact that some programmers are more suited for different tasks, even if their levels are different.

It's not that I can't believe you're capable of it, even with narrow experience, but that you won't find anything you'd need it for that would be worth the effort, as opposed to spending the effort to learn to do those extra things in Python.

Now, if you were REALLY good, then the initial investiture would be a small price to pay for complete control of the engine, making the existant options irrelevant. But that's more like "if you've already done almost exactly the same thing several times."

Also, if you wanted to do something that was too processor-intensive for a 4GL like Python, but I can't imagine such a thing being necessary in a VN. Preprocessed images, etc, are preferable to runtime work.
    >> Anonymous 12/20/09(Sun)04:23 No.3939971
    >>3939946
Ah, now I understand what you are saying, and I see your point.

And If it really would only be me, myself working on it then it would also probably be true, but as I know lots of other programmers it oculd still be somewhat more useful to have your own engine if we were to ever work in a group.
As a group our level combined could probably be enough to make a custom made engine worthwhile.
    >> Anonymous 12/20/09(Sun)04:30 No.3939987
kinda, I'm working on one with some e-friends but it's going very slowly because all of us are super lazy.

I could write my own VN engine but I felt like that would be a waste of time. I'm using Ren'Py but I considered ONscripter too. Ultimately I went with Ren'Py because... well, python is way better than NScripter's shitty little scripting language.
