  • "UPTIME IS THE GAME, DOWNTIME IS THE NAME"
    today marks the end of scheduled maintenance—two guys with two weeks to kill and a few hundred hours later, we're finally [mostly] done.
    page loads/image downloads should be dramatically faster. until we hit 1gbps, at least. to all of my wonderful and ungrateful users: "you're welcome."
    (note: there are still a few other things i'll be working on so expect intermittent downtime)
    ps: thanks so much to mvb for all of the help and support.

    Someone in Japan is probably writing a wallpaper, yes, but I have not heard of the entire country of Japan writing a whole wallpaper.

    Lol. Silly AZNs and their chicken-scratch writing systems.

    Hey, the Sumerians called, they want their pictographs back.

    The best part is the logic combining the kanji.
    先 = future
    生 = birth/life
    先生 = teacher, a person born before you in most cases

    先 only means in front of, ahead, or tip. Alone, it cannot mean first.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)03:36 No.1911207
    I wasn't going to ask this, but since there is a language thread here anyway...

    Is 50 kanji per day a good pace? I don't mean 50 every single day, as I can't study every day, but 50 for each day I study (4 or 5 days a week). I've gotten to 150 doing this and I have no trouble recalling any as of yet. Using Heisig.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)03:42 No.1911212
    >>1911207
    Go ahead. You'll only retain about 40% of it.

    >Using Heisig.
    Forgive me. 20%.

    I'm sorry that writing characters over and over while hoping I remember it doesn't appeal to me.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)03:52 No.1911229
    >>1911207
    It's a great pace, but you won't be able to stick to it. Sure it's easy now that you're at 150 but see how easy it is when you're at 1500.

    Yeah, I've considered that. It's not hard, but it's long. I believe I have the drive to finish, but I guess only time will tell.

    "Hard way" and "proper" usually go hand in hand. Especially if you ever hope to reproduce them in writing.

    For some people it doesn't matter, for others it does.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)03:57 No.1911239
    >>1911237
    I suppose I'm actually using Heisig slightly improperly, but for each character I write it ~10 times while processing the image and then force myself to write it again when reviewing. Thus I can write all of them so far. That may change later, though, as I learn more.
