Why aren't there more good scifi series? A couple of the treks, Firefly and the early seasons of SG1 are pretty much all there is.

Battlestar Galactica is good if you can stay throught Season 1, really good story Development . But I normaly don't like Uniform Military Sci Fi Shows, would love to see more Western SciFi like Firefly, well guess only one who delivers are japanese Animes like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun

fucking hell, you forgot farscape.. skip season 2, it's not that important anyway and it will let you down. the rest is awesomely awesome, in a very awesome way if you know what I mean. among the hundreds and hundreds of gigabyte filled with tv series, farscape really holds a special place on my hard drive. I think I will never ever again laugh as much as I did back when I watched all four seasons in a couple of weeks.

Yeah, BSG is awesome. And if you liked Firefly, then give Cowboy Bebop a try. It's one of the best Anime shows ever made, and it's very simillar to Firefly.

    LEXX! >>>>>>> Everything else

The state of Sci-fi has degenerated into pure garbage. There are people in this world that consider shit like Star Wars sci-fi.

Guess what? It's NOT! Nothing more than a glorified western in space. If you want REAL sci-fi, read a book.

I agree with that, but the nerd in me wants to rage a little because Bebop came first; so Firefly is similar to Bebop, not the other way around. That's just me being a pedantic nerd, though.

Cowboy Bebop has the rare quality of not being generic Weeaboo bullshit. So even if you hate anime, you should still consider giving Bebop a chance, since it has none of the cliches of regular anime.

    Also: Nobody mentioned Blade Runner.

Any Heinlein, Ender series (somewhat childish, but still awesome), Dune, Dawn of the New Sun (a story set far, far into the future as our sun is dying) to name a few.

It's a book OF politics not one ON politics, if that makes sense. If you want something in the similar vein (an engaging story that is really just a discussion on some kind of social thought) try Stranger In A Strange Land - it's Starship Troopers for religion.

I can compile a list of 40+ titles if you want but for starters...

Anything by Frank Herbert (besides Dune). I like "Destionation: Void" and the follow-ups "The Jesus Incident" and "The Lazarous Effect.

Also, "The Whipping Star" and "The Dosadi Experiment."

"The Heaven Makers" is fun. I can throw some hardcore shit at you if you want by other authors.

Frank Herbert is s good start if you're not used to reading books with 500+ pages.

Plus, read "Ender's Game," it's bad-ass. Also, "Stranger in a Strange Land."

Actually Star Wars is a glorified western. Go read what Gene Roddenberry had to say about it, as well as his own Star Trek.

They aired a sci-fi special on TLC a few years back where many modern day sci-fi writers and experts pointed out the difference between REAL SCI-FI and stories/film that simply use SCI-FI as a backdrop or plot device. Damn Noob.

    Go educate yourself.

It starred the the mechanic from Firefly, the Black Ranger from Power Rangers, and Elizabeth Webber from General Hospital, ALL IN THE SAME FUCKING SHOW!! There's also a few guest appearances by George Takei and Mark Hamill.

Pic is the mechanic from Serenity when she was on Space Cases. In b4 Holy Shit.

The reason there are very few "good" sci-fi series has been skirted around this entire thread.

The reason is the target demographic of sci-fi will watch and obsess over complete garbage. The prime culprit being stargate.

Why is there not a lot of good sci-fi? Because of you.
    >> Anonymous 09/16/08(Tue)19:19 No.1846465
battlestar is the best if you're looking for a dark, alienless, people drama.

i guarantee you that watching this show through the entire series will make you shit your pants. that being said, bsg is not some show you can just "pick up" like house. it's extremely plot driven especially throughout seasons 1 and 2. season 3 is where they faltered due to production/executive fuck ups but it got better once season 4 came on

here's hoping for a great last 10 episodes in january (or maybe april if sci-fi is gay)

I would say that the reason there's no good sci-fi is more that the majority of the viewing public has an IQ of 80 or so.

    >>1846470

    Titan AE is good.
    Starship Troopers is excellent.
    Terminator 3 is also awesome.
    Event horizon was pretty cool.
Sunshine was a nice movie in HD.
Speed Racer was the movie of the decade.
    Solaris was pretty cool.
    Oh and the fifth element.
There are really too many to list.

Fantasy and Sci-fi are effectively interchangeable. The problem about sci-fi. Is that most people who like it are (a tiny minority of the general populace) and they usually don't know shit about science anyways.

Skip anything anime. With the only exclusion being DBZ related. I loved the movies.
