There are three factions of weeaboos

    1. Regular anime fans who like Japan and have a growing interest of it because of anime.
    2. Elitist fans whose interests in Japan have long branched out of anime and into different media like idols, VNs, etc.
    3. "Purist" Japanese connoisseur whose interest in anime and other japanese entertainment is little or nonexistent compared to the appreciation and love of "traditional" Japanese culture - ie katanas, kimono, geishas, etc.

Which faction do you belong to?

Weeaboo means wapanese, but 3 is basically Japanophiles, and Japanophiles have been around way longer than anime, etc.

Also, you forgot the huge visual kei fanbase, many of whom have practically no interest in anime. And car/motorsportsfags and (wannabe) cultural anthopologists who've focused on Japan (have interest in current Japanese culture in general).

2, I guess. Not that elitist, though. I like the food (I'd kill for a good bowl of fresh tsukimi udon) and I'm still primarily in it for the video games, animu, and manga. I study the language so I can do those things better. Culture? A lot of their culture sucks. I only really like their otaku culture (and follow the rest just to understand the jokes.)

I find it odd that branching out implies elitism. Are animefags threatened or something?

That said, the little interest that I have in Japan stems from being a historyfag in middle school. The Sengoku period was extremely easy to digest due to my growing up on Chinese media. I didn't watch "anime" until high school and that came from my constantly visiting warez sites and having nothing to do during the summer break. Looking back, my interest in Japan and anime developed independently of each other which is quite odd. Anyways, I rarely watch anime now, spending much more time on VNs, STGs, RTSs, and sorting through old music.

So yeah, put me under... I don't really know.

1 and this is where I plan to stay. Its kind of funny. I tell friends that I like anime and they assume my room should be filled with wall scrolls of girls fondling each other or other things that would say I want to be Asian. You're trying to lump people into too specific groups, it doesn't really work that way.

While I do watch plenty of anime still, but don't have that strong interest in Japan even though i enjoy japanese entertainment, I also play VNs/eroge/doujin games, otherwise i wouldn't be on /jp/, however I don't really have much interest in idols, and no, I wouldn't say I belong in 3, however i do have various knowledge about Japanese culture. I do have some weeaboo friends who are either similar to me, or only play eroge, while there are some who only watch anime/read manga, and a lot who do both, and there's even some who are "Japanese connoisseur", but they still enjoy some japanese entertainment.

tl;dr: Most weeaboo's don't fit into such neatly organized groups such as yours.
