Can someone tell me how the Nielsen ratings work?

It seems to me that they are subject to significant bias and distortion by the participants, and I've never heard of or met anyone that was participating in it. How can they claim it represents every demographic?

    It doesn't tell you shit.

Does anyone actually know someone participating in it?

My family was for awhile. I stopped sending in the surveys when seaQuest was cancelled. All my efforts were for naught. :(

Some people get surveys (my mom did and just checked off Telemundo 24/7 for the whole week o_0 ) and some have tuner boxes that act like a cable box which notes what they watch and when they watch it.

It's a broken system. Considering the millions that shit themselves stupid whenever something like Firefly, Jericho, or Family Guy gets canceled, the networks should develop a better system of gauging popular opinion (possibly by, I don't know... listening to popular opinion).

It is impossible to listen to the popular opinion. Every where you go, people like different things. Different things are popular amongst certain groups.

Besides that. The execs don't really care. As long as they're making money.

Its actually a huge jerryrig system so they can get advertisers buying airtime as much as possible. The rest is all smoke and mirrors, more or less.

So why they say something like "40% of all TVs that were on were tuned to the Bears game" they really mean the 10,000 or so(if even that many) that they then USING THE MAGIC OF STATISTICS applied to the entire population.

I dunno about anyone else, but my pamphlet showed up with $30 cash. Doomed system or not, getting paid to tell people I watched porn for three days straight is a reason to keep it around.
