Would people be interested in a maid cafe/gaming center style place on the East coast? The maids wouldn't be all asian, they'd probably be american cosplayers. Would that be something you'd be interesting in going to?

This shit never works. OP, we had a maid cafe here in Toronto, run by fucking chinks. It wasn't even anime themed either, and it failed massively. I heard of a similar story with another one in New York, which was true to traditional maid cafes but still failed cause it was filled with white unattractive fujoshi. Don't do it OP, you'll be cursed.
    >> OP 11/20/08(Thu)22:44 No.1642618
Well the main purpose is that it would be a LAN/gaming cafe with the maid part as a bonus...

    Not a 100% maid cafe.

Americans can't maintain the same cheerful hospitality Japanese customer service employees can. Americans generally have a really shitty attitude when they work in customer service.

You'll be lucky to find enough attractive, friendly girls at a low enough salary to maintain such a place- not to mention luring enough ronery faggots out of their computer caves to throw away money on $50 cups of tea. Just doesn't happen in America.

This is assuming LAN/gaming cafes are even successful.

If you had an actual successful business idea, and then made sure all your personnel were cute and wore cute costumes, then it might work out in your favor. But any business built on the hope that people will come purely for their moemoe maids will fail.

    Agree with this.

Maid cafes are about creating a fantasy of cheerful, indulgent service, something the Japanese tend to be good at in the first place. Americans treat customers like shit, because being obnoxious is the special skill of people raised in that culture.

That's the thing, there's almost no reason for anybody to go outside to game anymore. I used to go to arcades all the time- now I can't even name one arcade that isn't full of overpriced failure or DDR showoffs.

The overhead to maintain quality up-to-date games is immense compared to the actual business you can reasonably hope to get.

Plus we are currently in an economic depression, meaning nobody will want to go outside to blow their cash on playing games they could play comfortably in their own home.

I'd say this is the bigger problem.
Maid cafe's in Japan aren't all they're cracked up to be... the girls are pretty bad actresses and they're not usually that cute.

So yeah, better to just go with gaming center. If the girls feel like dressing up, why not? I wouldn't go, but I wouldn't go to a gaming center anyways.

The gaming places around where I live do a booming business from all the faggots who want to play DoTA or CS or whatever together in a public place. But I suppose the local demographic isn't exactly the most typical slice of the North American market.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/08(Thu)22:56 No.1642666
OP, do you mean a gaming center in the sense of a net cafe or an arcade? Because the primary appeal of a maid cafe or cosplay girls generally would be the weeaboo demographic, and I don't know how much overlap they have with people who play CS and other LAN-friendly netcafe stuff. Arcades, on the other hand, are more weeaboo-oriented.

It doesn't matter if it's a maid CAFE or a place that happens to have maids. The appeal of maids is they're always happy to serve you. Where the fuck are you going to find people like that in America? I can't even go through a normal check out at the grocery store without getting a shit attitude from the worker. This.

Depends on the demographic of the area you want to set up. Don't expect people to drive miles just to come to your maid-whatever.

You'd probably be best off setting up near college campuses. Colleges are full of weeaboos with disposable income.

Theoretically. But they really aren't, they're just faking it.
Admittedly it's not something you could coerce the average North American to do, but I'm not sure that the artificial sweetness of maid cafe maids is something you'd necessarily want either.

They said 'american cosplayers' but when speaking of the coast they only said 'the East coast'. I admit that in this case the country can easily be inferred, but it's true that Americans tend to just say 'the East coast' or 'the West coast', even in the company of people from other nations.

    Now there's an idea.

A ronery maid arcade. Somehow you need to have attractive friendly maids who play videogames with people. The price per play will be abnormally high but you're basically trying to distract people from how much money they're spending by throwing cute girls in the mix. It's a bit like Vegas gambling, except all they get in return is someone to talk to, so they just kind of keep pouring quarters into the machines without really thinking.

You need to pull an Ouran Host Club. Train unattractive girls to be attractive or at least acceptable.

Actually the more I think about this the more it's just a cabaret. You could do this with karaoke or animu or whatever, it doesn't necessarily have to be vidyas.

Someplace with something to do that has a lot of cute girls who will hang out with you, and you have to pay to stay there.

That's just a cabaret, with maids. The clients will probably be creepier and older because you'll be on the thin line between prostitution and legitimate business.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/08(Thu)23:17 No.1642730
You are better off hiring sluts and opening a prostitution house.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/08(Thu)23:19 No.1642739
What if there were different theme nights? Not just maids all the time? Like, Host Club Night, ect?
    >> Anonymous of Colombia !pkzejWGkfw 11/20/08(Thu)23:20 No.1642741
I think the problem would be a sizable enough amount of customers that would generate enough income.
The appeal of a gaming center is the present group of people willing to play and/or powerful enough connections to deal with lag-free internet play. I thought the american broadband situation was beyond these sort of measures, with most online gamers doing so from their homes.
Now, the added hook of maids as well might drag them out of their sun deprived nests, but would it generate a need to keep coming? Maybe once or twice to see what's the deal, and then realize they have the same thing at home, except that there's no girl obviously faking and going through the motions.

So it all falls on the girls. They don't even have to be asian (yeah, you heard me) as long as they are pleasant to look at, are willing to serve well, and can twist the pitiful hearts of humans to generate affection. Nothing like a deluded man to sustain the business.

Get a group of two or three girls. Pay them a pitiful base salary, and base the rest on tips. They WILL work for those tips, and it will increase the clients.

Best of luck, you're not the first one to attempt something like this, and you don't exactly hear stories of success. One of the best ones I heard was just a maid cafe on weekends, the rest of the time being a comic/game shop.

It wouldn't change the fundamentals of what everybody else in this thread is saying.
Your business idea has to be sound, without the maids/cosplay/whatever.
Adding cosplay on top of that is just a bonus.

I'd pay for that, for a girl to sit down and play games with me. Even though I'm paying for comradeship, I can at least pretend that she enjoyed spending time with me, even if at the end of the day she only remembers me for my unusually large tip.
