Hey /jp/. There was a storm over by my house, and lightening struck a tree trunk and knocked the tree over, sending it crashing and breaking our wireless internet cable. I had no other choice than to pack up my computer and go to Starbucks to use their internet connection. So here I am now. At a crowded Starbucks and scared shitless of the people around me.
Ask me anything.
>>
It broke your wireless internet cable? What?
>>
Take a photograph.

>>10120759
In before that "Wireless network isn't connected" error message.

>>10120759
Yeah. We're hicks so it's like- up in the sky where the other wires are. There's no power either.

When I read "computer" I think "desktop computer", so when you say you "packed up" your computer and took it to Starbucks, is my mental image of a nerd sitting at a table and nonchalantly hooking up a monitor/keyboard/mouse to a computer accurate?

Back in 2007 there was an ice storm where I live and I had no power for a week. It was too icy to go anywhere and I heard most everywhere was closed anyway. I spent the days walking back and forth in my house. Then at 6 PM I would take a lot of nyquil in order to pass out, then wake up and do it all over again.

>>10121161
Which is why you don't go to a coffee house.

The Wi-Fi is supposed to be an added benefit for paying customers, not the sole reason you go. If you go to a coffee house and buy apple juice, you deserve to be mocked by everyone there.
>>
Don't worry OP, nobody really cares if you act weird in Starbucks. They're too busy drinking overpriced beverages.

>>
>>10121320
It's not very difficult to grab some juice out of the fridge and give it to a customer. I'm sure there are lots of kids who want apple juice so the staff hands those out on occasion.

Ordering a coffee on the other hand is very overwhelming, you're thrown on the spot and have to pick a coffee from a whole list of weird names that have no indication of what is in it.
>>
>>10121320
Speaking of grande. I hate their new size. I liked the old "grande" size better, the grande is the new fucking venti its too much coffee I never asked for so much coffee

Fine, if you'd like to look at it from that angle, what kind of adult walks into a Starbucks and orders apple juice? One that deserves a disapproving glance from a coffee shop drone, at least.

>>10121345
I hate their goddamn size naming schemes too. I'm always tempted to just say "give me a medium americano," but I end up saying "grande" instead, and I die a little inside each time.

Do you like black coffee? Americanos really aren't that far removed from regular black coffee, not sure why you'd dislike them if you aren't some sugar-fiend who orders "mocha double half frappes."

It's a perfectly fair comparison to make.
Your whole argument is based around the fact that a significant number of people in the world fulfill X criteria, while my counterargument is that that can be true while the proportion of Starbucks customers that the average Starbucks employee interacts with that fulfill X criteria can still be significantly low.

OP is over-thinking it: sure, there may be some people who think 'oh dear, that guy seems creepy', but anyone who isn't in a high-school mentality doesn't do anything about it to the 'creep' because it's a waste of fucking time.

Because this thought of 'creepy individual' isn't relevant to any action or process in life, he won't be remembered, so long as he isn't (1) doing some sort of high-profile creepiness [playing eroge, having an autistic fit over drink preparation, physically smelly, etc.] (2) going to the same place repeatedly, and becoming a creepy part of the décor, as if he were a portrait of a sad clown or something (3) is going to the coffee shop in a clichéd small town where everyone knows everybody else.

To be memorable in a big city, you have to be one hell of a nutcase. Most people are too caught up in their existence as a pursuit of goals or commodities that you're quickly forgotten.
>>
>>10121605
>going to the same place repeatedly, and becoming a creepy part of the décor, as if he were a portrait of a sad clown or something

>>
I used to go to Starbucks whenever I wanted to drink in public and browse the internet. I'd just buy a bottle of Tropicana and drink some of it, then I'd go into the bathroom and pour a few shots of vodka. Then I'd hole up in some corner and get drunk while browsing /a/ and /v/

Moral of the story: if someone with a laptop is seated in a corner such that no one can see what he is doing, he is probably looking at kiddie porn

Anyway after a while they caught on and started giving me dirty looks even when I started putting money in the tip jar to bribe them. Maybe they found out I was downloading Rustle doujins off of their wifi I dunno.

Also they started doing something which slowed down my torrents to a snail's pace so I had to clear out and find a new spot. I squatted in a hipster cafe a for a few months before find a new home at a dive punk rock bar. I had just started playing Touhou; the bartender and the usual drunks that made love to the slot machines every afternoon with their welfare checks got a real kick out of me owning Rumia and Cirno on easy modo. Marisa is a real favourite amongst crust punks, apparently.

Emphasis on the creepy bit. It really depends on what the enployees and the other regulars and rich patrons think of you.

If OP spends his afternoon sipping apple juice and writing short stories about the Tragic Adventures of Ray-Mu and Melissa he would be quickly accepted by his bohemian brethren. If it was an independent cafe he might start getting free drinks or invites to basement shows

If OP's stories about Ray-mu and Melissa involve hot futanari dickings he can expect cold shoulders and maybe police attention if they find out (and the baristas will find out)

This brings up a serious question.

Is it really safe to use public wifi to download loli and torrent large files?

I don't want to use my home network to download loli, and my brother uses most of our bandwidth so I have to download my character albums somewhere else.

Can I seriously get caught? I mean, I don't think the bar I'm at is owned and run by smart people.

>>
>>10121936

You can see other people's bittorrent traffic if you're on the same network?

Please how? Or were you just talking about how all the other peers connected to the same tracker can see your public IP?
>>
>>10121899
It adds an air of class and sophistication, plus you get to think you're experiencing a different culture even though a café au lait in France is completely different to a café au lait in North America.

The problem is that if you just called the drinks "coffee with a bit of milk", it wouldn't justify paying $4 for it. Like a lot of food and drink, coffee becomes depressingly simple when you figure out how it's made. You need to think there's some mysterious process that goes on, that you couldn't possibly operate one of those easy-to-use machines yourself, otherwise why would you be paying so much money for a cup of what is mostly hot water?
>>

Packet sniffing. You may recall a few years ago there was some drama because Facebook sent its cookies over HTTP in plaintext, and someone wrote a Firefox extension that made it trivial to copy that cookie and access someone else's account.

>Or were you just talking about how all the other peers connected to the same tracker can see your public IP?

That. I'm not sure what you are concerned about when you say getting caught. I mean, I don't know if what you are asking about doing is legal where you live. But if you are doing something sensitive you shouldn't be using torrents.

That's not a problem. Your public Ip is just connected to that store.

This would be the real issue, but it's also extremely unlikely that anyone would bother or give a shit.

I'd just say don't worry about it. Do what you like.

"Excuse me, sir. We have evidence of illegal activity being conducted over your wireless network. Do you mind if we look at your security camera footage?"

As if that would seriously happen.

If you're really worried about something that ridicolous happening, just set your torrent client to connect to a proxy first, or better yet use private/anonymous trackers only if you can for certain torrents.

Unless there was a security camera trained on your screen, they can't identify that it was actually you. They might be able to pull your MAC address from the stores logs, but I doubt that would hold up in court.

Private trackers don't make your activity private. All they can do is limit members to those who are invited. But who has been invited? You can't know.

Please respond.

The chances are much more unlikely though.

How about DHT? It's extremely hard for anyone to track specific copyrighted data over it, then it is to have someone listing down all the IP addresses of people connected to a certain tracker for illegal data.

I don't know. I'm just saying that if someone wants to get on a private tracker and find people to sue or arrest, they can do it. It's not safe. I'll agree that chances are small, though. Private trackers are mainly useful for quality standards.
