Is there suppression towards sentimental people in your country?

It's drizzling here in Korea, and I'm listening to the song I like.
I feel happy.

But whenever my friends find out this, they will laugh at me for being sentimental.
They will call me 8th-grader-diseased
because that sort of thing is what only emotional 8th graders would do.
It's kinda sad.

How about your country?
I want to believe this is phenomenon unique to such a mentally-illed society of South Korea.
>>
We don't talk about emotions.
>>
Yeah man, no kidding.

Riding the Seoul subway at 7am with all the depressed looking men and women...such a soul-crushing experience.

Not really.

Eighth grader disease?

중2병 (中2病) 중학교 2학년 병 Eighth-grader-disease.

A: Look at those stars. They look so amazing in this rain.
B: You caught eighth grader disease. I don't want to hang out with you anymore.
>>
I do not think so, people will just look at them and will think: "that guy is just strange/retarded"

Btw korea, are the students there so stressed and sad as people say? Is KAIST such a strange place (i.e guys do not laugh because they do not have time)?

How old are you OP?

I would say this is a very real possibility

Being sentimental in certain amounts is good for you, but not too much

Unable to or being pressured into suppressing certain emotions is a very good measure of the far reaching consequence of a society bend on changing toward certain standard or to emulate another

This pattern may untimately effect the overall psyche of the population in subtle or even overt ways

Well, in England, we're just about as repressed as it's decent to be, but if I made a comment to a friend about the stars looking beautiful or how the park really comes to life in the summer, the least I'd expect is a smile and a nod in agreement. There's really nothing wrong with appreciating the world and the many little wonders therein, and if somebody disagrees, then they're probably not worth their weight in wood shavings as a friend.

They'd rather discuss trends in other countries and act like highschoolers you find in American Cinema.

such is life here in my third world shithole.
>>
In the states, that's much more accepted. Perhaps because it's generally expected that you be friendly and strike up some vague conversation with strangers? A sort of "hey. how are you? weather sure is pretty today, isn't it?" blah de blah. But even past that sort of custom, we like nature a lot in the states and don't mind appreciating it.
>>
America has suppression of intelligence.

Go to a school and you will see that, even the smart kids, will downgrade their grades, get an A? Tell all your friends you got a B. The vast majority will brag about their failed grades and how "Man I failed so hard, didn't study."

Go back to our 2004 election and you can see the republican argument against Kerry was literally "Look how smart that man looks, you don't want a smart man as President do you, it will make you feel stupid! George Bush would have a beer and go bowling with you, VOTE BUSH"
>>
>>7986059
Now that's one thing I'll never understand.
>>
>>7986091

Which bit? Liking nature? Or a tendency to strike up meaningless pointless conversations with strangers?

You mean Britons don't do that?
I thought it was English (language) thing, not American.
Then what do you say when you meet a stranger?
>>
>>7986168
talking to strangers is much more interesting than talking to acquaintances. the outcome of the conversation is unpredictable. you're just as likely to be told to fuck off as to maybe discover an amateur astronomer or physics enthusiast who never gets to talk about the stars and the rain
>>
>>7986168

Eh, it's mostly just custom I guess. If you're around some stranger for a bit, why stand around awkward when you can instead talk to them all awkwardly? They're all about the same conversation.

"Hey. How ya doing? Sure is nice weather out, isn't it? I don't think we've had this nice a day in..."

"Did you watch the football games last Sunday? That game between the ___ and the ___ sure was a lot of fun to watch"

"Where about do you live? Are you from here? I live down by the ____ area. Nice place, beautiful park right near by. Great place for our kids to play..."
>>
>>7983460 (OP)
In Belize, it's weird if you aren't sentimental about everything. You're expected to look at the world in a philosophically "deeper" way.
>>
Wow, first world is so miserable.
>>
>>7986202
If you mean a stranger on the bus or something, the usual procedure is not to meet them. If it's a friend of a friend, just be yourself, if it's a future in-law, be nice a polite. You know how it is.

Just seem odd to me, but I think it's the atmosphere more than anything, because when I visit the US or Spain or Mexico I tend to be a much more friendly person, though that may just be because I'm drunk for the most part when I visit a place of warmer climes. I don't know though, maybe it's just the air in northern Europe, because I hear Sweden and Finland are just as bad as us in these matters.

>Is there suppression towards sentimental people in your country?

No, not really. We joke arround a lot and we have a lot of sense of humour and we try to act as tough as possible but whenever someone wants to discuss deep feelings and emotion there's always someone there willing to hear them out and have some sympathy, friendship is a really important part of our lives because that's how we get by during harsh times, and when in the good times, fun people are always welcome. Comradery between peers and strangers alike is what define us as people i'd dare to say.

In spite of the seemingly rising disregard for other's rights and well-being in the past decade, i feel as though, in general, we're incredibly friendly and kind. For instance, Im used to hearing out people's stories and dramas at my workplace, it's nice knowing we're not entirely hostile to eachother.
>>
>>7983460 (OP)
It really depends we are more outgoing than most of the europeans and we are really friendly, we can be brothers if we share a beer and say i love you to people we care about.

However we (as a country not myself) mock those who are too sensitive, calling them fagoots, or cowards (maricas) thats one of the worst insults that one can get around here. We dare each other to do stupid or dangerous things and we mock those who dont do it.
>>
no, i don't know this feel

Yes, in some way. It's not very popular in the Netherlands to be emotional and whatnot. Most of the people in this country prefer to listen to party music, go to parties, out & drink, and consider weeping over your emotions to be gay and faggy. Just generally speaking. We are a very down to earth and honest people, but it can be intrusive and not stimulative to be emotional and be vulnerable.

I'd rather live in England for this reason.

You're not alone Koreabro.

I don't like Korean music.

I don't understand the need for a rapper through halfway of all your songs. Thought that was just a western thing.
>>
>>7986959

Epic High was good though.
>>
>>7986959
I don't know.
Basically all modern Korean music has been influenced by western music.
Traditional Korean music is basically like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWpWrckNIno
Also the rapper is Korean Canadian and used to hang out with black / white rappers in Canada.
>>
Most Americans are generally pretty maudlin when it comes down to it.

The exception is probably New Englanders, who are pretty reserved, when they aren't Irish or Italian.

by the way, there is a Korean-language dub of that anime:
