On Sunday night I hosted the second 4chan Q&A/PMQ session here. Thanks everyone for contributing 4,000 posts and hanging out for 7.5 hours—it was fun and I hope it was informative/entertaining.

New inline extension features: improved thread watcher (threads with new posts will be bold, and will also show you unread count), deleted posts are now marked as such, thread stats shows when reply/image limits are met, and quick reply disables file upload when thread is at image limit. Note: To use the new thread watcher, you must first remove your old watched threads.

ITT we help each other with the languages we are learning.

I'll start: I'm trying to learn Arabic, but there are some letters in the alphabet that doesn't make sense to me. They sound exactly the same, but the course I'm taking says they are different. They are:
Sin and Sad (س and ص)
Zay and Za (ز and ظ)
Ta and Ta (ت and ط)
Dal and Dad (د and ض)

Native or fluent speakers of Arabic pls help. What are the differences here? If anyone can vocaroo them it would be immensely helpful.

When we have sorted this out, someone please tell me how the fuck to pronounce 'Ayn.

Pic related it's ت

They're very different, I'm sure YouTube has a video about them.
ص ظ ط ض are heavier than د ت ز س, and sound quite different, and are easily distinguishable apart when pronounced.
Hope that helps.

I've searched YouTube, but I haven't found anything useful. Just the regular "learn the arabic alphabet" videos, and like I said, I just can't hear the difference between the letters. Maybe if they were pronounced right after each other I would, but I haven't found any videos who do that.

Would it be possible for you to vocaroo the letters for me? I would be forever grateful!
>>
>>6822812

...Yeah, sorry, can't do that.

If it's still not clear, say so, and I'll look for a better way.

I'm learning French. I don't really have any questions so far. It's pretty straightforward grammatically, actually.
>>
>>6822962
Can you pronounce "hier" ?
>>
>>6822711
Can you please abandon kanji? I hate them.
>>
>>6822980
Maybe. I haven't even learned that word yet.
i'm gonna guess it's something like "ee-ehr" with the r just being that slight nasal sound at the end. I kinda am not super good at pronunciation but I'm only about a week along. Been listening to French music and watching clips from shows to get an idea for pronunciation.

>>

I would love to help, but i don't a working microphone, sorry dude. But you can distinguish by adding an H to the end of each letter while making the sound "heavier"

sa and sAH for example.

Yes, the sandniggers have infested all three of our countries (Sweden, Norway, Netherlands). I just commented that it's ridiculous for either of us to say stuff like "enjoy your sandnigger overloards" when said sandniggers fuck all three of us up.

Stop arguing like a child and actually put some thought into understanding what posters are trying to convey.

Arabic has such a beautiful script. Shame they have a such a terrible language in terms of grammar and pronunciation.

Ottoman Turkish was fine though.

Turkish with Arabic script and lots of Arabic and Persian words. Grammar and pronunciations are also Turkish.

People who learn it do only for hobby or history-masturbation sake, it is an extinct language now. Also it probably is one of the hardest languages if isn't the hardest.

So as far as I can understand, it's basically the same sound, just more powerful? If I try to pronounce a ت while exhaling more air and curling my tounge, it kinda sounds like a ط, same with the other sounds. I'll try to get hold of a mic later today, so I can vocaroo myself and then you can correct my pronunciation.

>>6831630
>>6831610

Your Norwegian is a grammatical nightmare, it's so bad I can hardly understand you. Sorry ;_;

Are you asking if I sound like a pirate when I speak bergensk? If so, the answer is no.
>>
It's really easy. I Arabic all dentals, that is sounds you form with your teeth, come in pairs. The difference is: Do you form s, z, t, d, th with your upper teeth (sin, ta, zay, dal, tha, dhal) or with your lower teeth (sad, tha, zha, dad).

Try it. You will notice that this also affects the sounds of your vowels next to these letters. "Tabib" (doctor) almost sounds like "tobib", while the ta in "tammam" almost sounds like "temmem".
>>
>>6833115

He is basically just translating directly from English with no sense for syntax or kasus.

Hmm, I see what you mean. Thanks for the help. I talked to my sister, and she can lend me a microphone tomorrow, if this thread is still here by then, I can vocaroo myself and we'll find out if I have learned anything.

I also found this:

If anyone is interested.
>>
I'll make a Vocaroo for you in a moment, bumping for thread revival. I've been told I have pronunciation comparable to native speakers by and Egyptian and a Saudi.
>>
>>6840634

I'll be going to bed now, but I will await your vocaroo eagerly when I get up tomorrow. Let's just hope this thread survives another night.

Protip: The thread will survive longer if other people also asks questions about whatever language they're learning.

I have knowledge of Anglo-Norman which is kind of like Old English and Old French.

Why nips don't go for katakana. I mean even this has a similiar letters like that.Who the fuck wanna struggle with kanji and stuff.
>>
>>6841691
Sure, here's a shitty reading of the Chanson de roland. Been a long time since I had to vocalize anything in Anglo-Norman, and nobody is quite too sure what it sounded like, anyways. But I worked with an expert in the field, so who knows.

For them katakana & hiragana is for children. Korean was also like that with their hangul before 20th century.

For the above posts...

I was trying to ask if the Bergen dialect is associated with sailors/lower class or something and if that's why they picked an actor from Bergen for the pirate character in that movie

and thanks for the critique on my grammar, I'll go learn that so I can translate a bit better

It seems that the region have some cultural allergy with non ideographic writing system. Only korean get over it.

how's that cramming for N3 going?
how hard do you think it is compared to N4?
>>
>>6821927 (OP)
Native speakers can be the worst at explaining differences in pronunciation. Maybe looking at the IPA for those sounds will help you out more.

If you're not conversant in IPA perhaps I can translate the data into something understandable.
>>
>>6848230
In my class I had this friend that just passed N1 this years but still performs poorly at Japanese Language classes, that just shows how even a dumbfuck can pass JLPT without trouble.

>>6848270
This. Those tests are quite useless, especially anything below N1.

noice
i took it when the transition from kyuu levels, and i was kicked out of my seat to see the difference between yonkyuu and N3. needless to say i flunk it with only 50% points

I finally fixed my scanner issue and this is the image I wanted to post originally. It's from one of my textbook.

I just don't get it why the Japanese wanted to made their alphabets from Chinese characters.
