    Regret Thread

Post historical events that you regret ever occurred. Doesn't have to be about your nation.

    Mine:

    >Arab Revolt

Oh, my Turkish brothers. Forgive us. If I could only go back and stop those dirty fuckin' traitors and their British dog. They ended our sublime Khilafa and allowed us to be divided and conquered by the West.

    >Operation Barbarossa

Had Hitler not broken the non-aggression pact... imagine a Europe ruled by the Fuhrer.

    >The Battle of Tours

Had the Franks not won, you would be looking at a very, very different world.

Britfag here. I regret my nation getting involved in the second world war. We should have just made a peace treaty with Hitler and called it a day, we'd be richer than America today and would still have our Empire.

And you really think that the Brits would have done the same thing? they would have broken the non-aggression pact, and then they would have said "yeah, it was for the sake of the Universe! those dirty nazis wanted to kill the sun"

It didn't have to happen. Hitler just became a bit too overzealous about conquering more land. He should have been content with ruling almost all of Europe, with the Soviets being contained in the east.

The war on the Eastern Front wasn't a war of ideologies, though that's what got the grunts on the front-lines riled up. "Yeah, kill those Commies / Fascists!" The two nations could have coexisted, not as friends, but at least not as outright enemies.

We were bankrupted by the end of the First World War, despite being at the climax of our imperial possessions at that time. The Second World War was just the 'Icing on the Cake', to put it crudely.
To be honest, I don't think it was avoidable. We got involved to protect continental ports that could be used to launch an invasion on the British Isles. As long as Germany was united and angry, the British Empire was done for, like the Romans we'd had our time, it was America's turn, and now it looks like they're to be ousted soon, too.

no, they could not have existed. read icebreaker by suvorov

after the treaty was established, stalin reorganized his entire front from the previous defensive position. he was going to invade nazi germany, that was the entire PREMISE of the second world war, a second chance at global communist revolution

hitler wasn't a moron and realized this, that's why he attacked as soon as he could, which wasn't quick enough still

the only way hitler could have had a chance at winning ww2 is if britain fucked off after he conquered france, so he could have concentrated on invading russia sooner than he did

But a confrontation between Britain/France and Germany was inevitable, regret ought to be saved for things which could feasibly have been avoided. Interesting to think what would have happened if the US had stayed out though, as you suggested.

i think if US kept out of WW2 entirely, eg not supplying the allies, then russia would have just barely beaten back nazi germany, but the resulting iron curtain would have been ALL of continental europe

and the US wouldn't have been as rich

so the soviet union would have been the uncontested world superpower

    which would have sucked dick

I can see where you're coming from, but I doubt Stalin would have risked warring with Hitler immediately, or at all considering the course the war was taking.

Hitler already dominated almost all of Europe, either through conquest or alliance, by the time he betrayed Stalin. All that was left was to handle Great Britain, which could have been done eventually had he not wasted resources fighting the Russians.

By the time the USSR could have fully mobilized for war, it would be fighting a fortified, German-dominated Europe.

Actually this is accurate, and even more, Hitler wanted to Attack Russia months before, but fucking dumb Italy went into a fight with Greece and ..... well.. they kicked the Italians asses nice and long, so Hitler had to send help......... and the months passed...... then he realized that it was 1942 and if he was waited 1 year more it was highly possible for the ruskies to attack Germany, so he had to send the Wehrmacht knowing well that the winter was on his way... bad thing bad thing...

they mobilized a LOT quicker than you seem to think

and YES they did mobilize. why do you think hitler shot so quickly and far into the east? the russians took down their defensive front in preparation for an assault

But could they have beaten a Europe completely under Nazi rule? If the British had surrendered, I doubt America would have entered the war.

It would end up being Nazi Europe vs. the USSR, and I don't think the Russians would have fared well against Hitler.

Well, had Britain and Murrica not joined the Franco-Russian alliance, I think Germany could have very feasibly won the war, or at least "won" it in the way France "won" it in our timeline. France didn't have the naval power to disrupt trade to the extent Britain did, and British dickery directly led to Murrican involvement (disruption of trade, preventing any pro-Central Power newspapers from being distributed in America, necessitating German sub campaigns which upset America, lots of propaganda, boosting trade and loans with America to the point that it would have DEVASTATED the American economy if the Allies lost, etc.)

Germany attacked through Belgium as a bet that Britain wouldn't make good on their threat to intervene, there was a long, continuous deliberation over whether or not to invade through Belgium, and they made their bet. Unfortunately, that one bad bet cost them the whole war.
