77 KB OCCUPY WALL STREET Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)14:03 No.4468286
(This is a serious thread, so please try and be civil.)

When the Occupiers say they want to "end corporate personhood", what exactly is meant by this?

Corporations have a "legal personality", which means under the law, a corporation can have a legal name, can enter into contracts, file lawsuits, incur debt, and own property. Legal personalities exist in order to allow a group of people to act as a single entity in the eyes of the law; unions, activist groups, independent associations, non-profit organizations - all of these have a legal personality.

It is essentially impossible for corporate personhood to be abolished without completely destroying our economic and legal framework in this country. The whole world operates on these legal principles regarding the recognition of legal personalities as well. Abolishing corporate personhood would essentially cause America to drop out of the world-system, so to speak.

Can someone clear this up for me?

Mostly it's that people are ass pained when corporations use "personhood's" first amendment right to buy off politicians.

They aren't even aware of the other things (legal contracts, ownership, etc.).

The supreme court ruled that since corporations have personhood, they have freedom of speech which includes financing campains endlessy, thus bribing politicians.

It shows how phenomenally ignorant these protestors are. Corporate Personhood has existed in the US since the mid-1800s. However these people are too dumb to realize abolishing corporate personhood would remove the means by which the public can file lawsuits against corporations. What they want is the overturning of Citizen's United vs. FEC, which appears to be their first realization of corporate personhood as a thing.

Why shouldn't they have the ability for freedom of speech? Unions etc can now talk as much as they want blah blah blah. The hubbabaloo of Citizens United is really kind of funny.

Also, it really doesn't matter *what* you major in, just network while in uni and have some decent job experience in something administrative and you should be fine.

OP, they're mad that corporations, while legally people, are not held to the same standard that a person is. For example, they see huge corporations blatantly violating the law and getting 0.001% of their annual revenue in fines, while their neighbor smokes a blunt and gets 5 years. They see corporations using their personhood to finance campaigns that further their interest at the expense of the 99%. That's what they're mad about.

Blaming the companies is dumb though, they should be blaming the politicians who sell out. I personally dont believe that a company should be able to donate money to a campaign (The government exists to serve the people, not the companies), but the blame is not entirely on them. It's the politicians who make the laws the corporations exploit, so don't blame Wal-Mart for your shitty pay, blame the politicians who refuse to raise minimum wage. Occupy DC.

The USA empire is bankrupted. Its influence over the world is gone. Protest make sense. This corrupt country supported the murderous military dictatorships in the 60's. They're paying for.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)14:56 No.4468466
Really the 99% thing speaks volumes to the actual mindset of the movement. Everyone is hard working, honest, morally just, except this evil, parasitic, 1% other that needs to be quashed. It's ironic that they're pulling so much from the Imperialist playbook.
