At first I thought it was indeed a choice (I was raised Catholic) - but after taking some psychology classes I realized it isn't a choice, nor is it genetic (if it was genetic, it would have died out long ago). Basically, the amount of testosterone (among other hormones) you receive in the womb is the primary factor in determining sexual orientation and gender identity.

It's been proven to be linked to genetics. Combined with all the evidence of homosexual behaviour in other primates it's pretty fucking obvious that homosexuality is a completely normal thing within humans and primates at large.

I suppose the most interesting thing is people tend to decide which sex they wanna go for and stick with that - where in primates they'll basically use sex and grooming as a gesture of bonding (with everyone).

Which makes sense as the genes that increase homosexual behaviour would increase group stability and would in actual fact be a positive thing - as long as it doesn't impede their desire to pursue sex with females and lower their chances to pass on their DNA.
    >> Anonymous 10/07/11(Fri)22:20 No.4450745
i dont think a person can be purely homosexual or heterosexual. some people have more homosexual urges than others but they arnt homosexual until they made the choice to act on those urges.

Yes and no. In some cases it can be clear that an outside stimuli has affected a person's sexuality (e.g. I know of a guy who's mother abandoned him which led to his general misogyny and homosexuality), but in other cases it's just natural and preference.
Regardless though, I don't see whether or not it's a choice really matters, everyone should have the right to marry whomever they choose.

my problem with this debate is the logic that we must accept homosexuals if in fact homosexuality is a hereditary trait.

if this is the case, one could argue that pedophilia is no different and equally justifiable. it is a sexual desire of the individual which that have not chosen, but by which they are strongly affected.

we are born with the desire to shit in our pants, but social constructions create a strong enough taboo against such actions that we abstain from shitting ourselves. why is it so wrong to maintain that taboo on homosexuality, a trait which likewise does nothing to benefit our species?

I believe it is a product of the environment more than anything. People have different tastes because we are different. I don't believe someone just thought to themselves "I'm now going to find men attractive" and did so.
    >> Anonymous 10/08/11(Sat)14:19 No.4453744
    >>4453713
Shitting yourself is not the same as loving another person. You're comparing apples and oranges. Pedophilia also hurts people (the victims). The only thing homosexuality hurts is people's "morals and values" as they believe they have a right to be offended.

In fact, pedophilia really is just a sexual orientation. But while homosexuals can consent, kiddies can't. So pedophilia is no different but not justifiable and that's the difference. No sense in damning homosexuality for the reasons societies ban pedophilia.
    >> Anonymous 10/08/11(Sat)14:26 No.4453778
    >>4453744
There is no evidence which suggests that pedophilia hurts someone. Pedophilia is a state of mind - sexual attraction.
A person who acts on such desires is a weak-willed individual but he would be termed a child molester. Big difference.

    Yes and No.

I believe some are really born gay (they have a brain similar to a woman's) but some do turn gay after experiencing gay sex (if they didn't, they would have remained straight).

Whether or not it is "a choice" is largely a semantic argument and is totally irrelevant. Homos should be allowed to homo all they want, either way.

Probably not a choice, but rather a result of both genetic and social factors that intervene in a complicated manner. I do however think that there is a large part of people that could become attracted to the same sex if they just put alot of will into it.
