I've watched TV from around the world in a few languages, with my preference being BBC channels, and I could find some actual educational/political content that I can think to and enjoy watching. I've also been a fan of a lot of drama shows.

This has been bugging me for a while. Just why the hell is American TV so deluded and just plain bad? I can't go 10 minutes watching any random channel without finding blatant lies. It's as if everyone's holding back their knowledge on television.

Can't America get their shit together? I like America, but god damn, their TV is unwatchable.

I think of a series I've watched in the past 5 years OP.

I rarly even find myself watching TV these days.

In fact I'd say get an hour a month tops.

    Not USfag, but;

US has produced the very best TV over the last decade.
    The Wire
    Sopranos
    Breaking Bad
    Twin Peaks
    The Simpsons
    Arrested Development
The list goes on and on.

I hate many aspects of American culture (as I;m sure Americans do), but for all the shit that there TV channels put out, they also put out some real gold.

Breaking Bad, in particular, has left a big impression on me. It feels so well orchestrated. Absolutely superb.
    >> Anonymous 09/07/11(Wed)15:05 No.4315736
To be fair, there's the potential for "other" bias. Additionally, you're probably getting the better shows those countries have to offer where as you're getting everything around here.

Having said that, when shows get treated as continued mini-series instead of everlasting shows, you're able to skirt around alot of US programming's problems.

    This.

We churn out a lot of crap, but we also produce some of the finest television to have aired anywhere in the world.

    PBS Frontline
Star Trek (say what you want, but it was groundbreaking and influential)
    NOVA
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (not high-brow, but extremely funny)
    John Adams
Rome (with the BBC and an Italian network)

I'm also with you in that Breaking Bad is, bar none, the finest show on television.

For every two dozen shows like "Cupcake Wars", "Pawn Stars", and "Flavor of Love" we have a gem like Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, or Always Sunny.

Much like the American populace itself, we produce staggering amounts of useless shit, but when we produce something good, it's of the highest quality.

Not exactly. American TV is very closely watched, with lots of restrictions on what kind of ideas you can say. I'm also pretty sure they want to keep Americans educated by keeping rednecks on the Discovery Channel and replacing everything on the Science Channel with explosions.
    >> Anonymous 09/07/11(Wed)18:41 No.4316816
    >>4316720
Yeah, I agree with that concerning most of the programming on the History Channel, Discovery, etc. They try to appeal to the idiot "Ancient Aliens"-type folk.

But PBS still produces excellent educational programs with NOVA and the like.

    >American TV is very closely watched, with lots of restrictions on what kind of ideas you can say.
I don't think there are more restrictions than most developed nations. Perhaps a bit too many when it comes to things like nudity and cursing, but that hasn't prevented America from producing some of the best sitcoms and dramas at the moment (and yeah, some of the worst as well, but if you think the British don't produce some shit television as well then you're dreaming). In fact, some restrictions demanding a certain level of accuracy in educational programming might be a good thing.

Look, the Yanks produce some great shows. These are not among them. Okay, Scrubs is pretty good, but Friends is as bland and generic as a big bowl of plain rice, and the Big Bang Theory is fucking eye-gougingly terrible. And I'm not just saying that because "lol geekface". There are no jokes besides "Look at how wierd that guy is. And that guy!" They can't stretch that into a half-hour show, let alone the multiple series. I turned it on once and there was a joke about Sheldon picking up and putting his keys down. That was just it. He picked up his keys and put them down again. The audience roared with laughter. I was baffled. Maybe it was the face he was pulling.

The BBC is the UKs only mainstream network like NBC, ABC, and CBS, except it's funded by the government. It produces content geared towards a widespread English audience almost completely without the influence of (and moderation of) commercial interests, but this isn't always a good thing.

While their news reporting is top notch, their editorials and interest pieces are grossly liberal and in some cases even dramatized. I like much of what they produce, but more and more the continue to fund filler programs and no one stops them even when ratings for the shows stay low for years.

Outside of network television, American TV channels cater to a specific niche audience. Admittedly cable TV does produce more than its fair share of poor programing and filler, but shows that don't work or that aren't watched are quickly culled from the schedule, as apparent by the high turn over rate if new programs. The ~150 or so main cable channels are all about choice and what interstate you personally. American cable networks certainly produce more highly rated and award winning programs than anyone else and even if you don't watch 95% of what's on, you can still find something appealing.
Personally, I mostly watch the premium networks that make my favorite series, but there is still great stuff being shown on Discovery, AMC, and even NBC.

I've also seen Britsh cable programming and the stuff that's not resyndicated runs of the most popular American shows is just as shit as anywhere else. I would even go so far as to say that the UK produces a disproportionately large amount of shitty programming when its size is taken into consideration.

Also, I'm going to chime in on what constitutes shit-tier comedy:
    The Mighty Boosh- unwatchable
Friends- a soap opera, boring trash
Big Bang Theory- saw one episode, not funny, formulaic
Community- Oh, look another NBC sitcom, yawn
Scrubs- God no. A medical show parody that turned into a soap opera filled with heartwarming moments- how bland

    What constitutes god-tier:
Always Sunny- consistently hilarious, offensive, and with a highly love/hateable cast of sociopaths
Seinfeld- a show about nothing that's nonetheless full of superb substance
Arrested Development- brilliantly interwoven and self-referencing stories, superb cast
Little Britain- superb sketch comedy, absurd
30 Rock- excellent look into television production, sometimes preachy from Tina Fey's struggles, but saved by the rest of the cast and her self-deprecating humor
