    Actually he changed them to try and make sense of English spelling rules, e.g. gaol -> jail, shew -> show, etc.

    Fun fact though: -ize is the traditional spelling for things like finalize, it was the Brits that changed it to -ise in the 19th century because it was in vogue then to write everything like it was French. That's also the reason why spurious u's are still around in color, honor, etc.
