Fun fact though: -ize is the traditional spelling for things like finalize, it was the Brits that changed it to -ise in the 19th century because it was in vogue then to write everything like it was French. That's also the reason why spurious u's are still around in color, honor, etc.

No, the problem is that English uses few vowels to represent a wide range of sounds. Look at the word "purified." It could be pronounced "purr-ified" if you didn't know it should sound like "pyurified." that u could mean an "uh" sound and "oo" sound or a "yoo" sound.
