I disagree, the US has some excellent public colleges. The elementary schools are usually okay as well. It's the highschools that need work. Especially since they've started passing people who typically wouldn't pass in the first place.

I know they've lowered the standards for the exit-exams in some states. . .to Algebra 1.

So in your privatized world, how would a person like me (I just finished high school) with some 130 IQ and a high GPA, who happens to be fucking poor, get a decent education? Vouchers? How does that work? I know in public schools the standards are terrible and a great number of people of just... retarded, but I was alright since I got segregated into the "Gifted program", where Florida puts it's smart kids and gives them all their resouces, while the masses are left wallowing in intellectual decay.
I think privatization of everything is a horrible idea. Back in my old country they privatized everything back in the 90s and it was an unmitigated disaster that quickly caused the gap between rich and poor to turn into a vast gaping void.

So the government, instead of providing education, hands out shitloads of money for you to then pay other people to get education. That would be even more expensive for the taxpayer than just investing more into public schools, and would be essentially nothing but a massive government handout to private schools.

You sound like a really mad rich kid. So instead of paying for public schools, the government would pay everyone to go to private schools (thus still spending a lot on the public sector), and some rich guys would set up some super-prestigious schools that everyone wants to get into, they'd set up quotas for how many students can get in, richfags would bribe their way onto the list, the poor would get into private schools just as bad as today's public schools, these would fill up too, a bunch of cheap schools would open up with low resources even worse than today.....
Look. It happened in my country. It turned into monstrosity where the rich buy their way into the good schools, bad schools went bankrupt despite all the poor people who needed them and the supposed "voucher" system, the only way to get into a university is to have gone to a stupidly expensive good school (you can only get in through connections and bribery anyways), and the government had to set up public schools anyways after literacy started dropping. How about this:
    1. Subsidize tuition for education majors.
    2. Make it a requirement for teachers to work as student teachers for two years at 4 different schools.
    3. Remove the rules that allow for students to drop out of high school.
    4. Set up state-designed correspondence courses.
    5. Set up a system for students to be able to maintain a job and participate in school without completely fucking over their performance.
    6. Subsidize colleges so you can go without having to spend 20k a year.
    7. Grant more health benefits to teachers or pay them more or something, dear God.
    8. Fuck the Cold War, put more focus back on geography and english literature.

The problem is, you believe that any place in the US taking bribes would get humiliated on the news, etc.
The reality is that bribery and nepotism are everywhere here, especially in political circles (do you know what a PAC or a lobby is?), and are so widespread that they are simply a part of the system. Typical "it can't happen here" mentality. Also lol at "It would work because Americans are handsome rugged individualists and unique snowflakes who do everything right".

    Sigh...
The IMF used Latin America to test out theories of "fundamentalist" free enterprise, since it didn't matter to them if we suffered if it went wrong (ie, privatize everything, sell all national property to foreign/private corporations, etc.). It worked out horribly (Venezuela, Argentina, etc.). The problem is that those ranting about "free enterprise" are the ones with all the money, the ones who would profit, and speak to an audience of like-minded elites, who happen to have all the political power. I love seeing how the economic meltdown shut most of you up though. :)

The problem is that these kids would drop out of school and go to work in menial labor jobs instead of learning. The thing is that most of these kids that have no interest in learning have no interest in learning because their parents don't give a shit about their education because they're poor, either because they just don't care or because they work themselves to the bone and simply don't have the energy to properly raise their kids. As a result, the poor families would continue to be poor and, in situations such as this economic crisis, would be even poorer and the disparity would make current America look like Europe.

    Aww, so naive.
Americans aren't "street smart" with these things. Coming from a culture where bribery is a part of life whose existence isn't hypocritically denied, I know a little about how it works. It would go something like:
    1. Family and friends of the good school's owners get in.
    2. Those who make "donations" get in.
    3. The rich make little transfers to people on the inside, meet for dinner and mke friends, etc.
    4. and so on and so on and so on.

The USA has corruption everywhere, it's painfully obvious. Look at the system of PACs and lobbies, the way that even a representative seat costs at least $1 million in publicity, etc.

The problem with naive free marketfag's logic is that they assume that the ultra-rich just want to make honest, healthy profits, and they adorably believe that the US seriously isn't corrupt.

Problem is, the opposition would be as bad or worse than him. They would bring back the "neoliberal reforms" which ruined us before, and they have no real plan for governing the country. I'll add that today 225% of the world's average translates to a nominal GDP per capita of 19,350 USD. It is higher than the GDP per capita of South Korea, Taiwan or the Czech Republic, and each of these countries is considered developed. This is what Venezuela should be if only it managed to keep up with the world's average rate GDP growth rate, which is far from impressive. Somehow, despite having huge oil resources, it failed to achieve this.

In the little Venezuelan exclave here in South Florida, among most of us, not going to college makes you SHAME OF FAMILY. The simple reason is race/ethnicity. The US public educational system (elementary, secondary/high school) is filled with blacks/hispanics. While the US post-secondary (college/universities) schools are majority white/asian.
