How come UN Peacekeepers have no funding and is probably the worst volunteer job ever? Not to mention all the corruption. How do we help?

I want to join the UNPs but.... it seems like a retarded Idea coming from a US Soldier.

    That's why they suck.

and why don't we get more funding for them? because of the corruption? why do we have so much corruption? because of lack of funding...
    >> Anonymous 06/13/10(Sun)18:36 No.1345387
You can't join the UN as a private person, they are all national troops coming from the official national armies
of the UN member states. Also they are useless scum in most cases. If the US has no official troops in the UN forces then there is no way for you.

Also lack of funding is because the national states don't want the UN forces to become strong.
    >> Anonymous 06/13/10(Sun)18:42 No.1345421
Peacekeepers have no funding because the UN spends their budget on stupid shit.

    >> Anonymous 06/13/10(Sun)19:11 No.1345672
Why would you want to join them? The UN is the most useless organization ever. It's dominated by the members of the security council, who only do what's best for them and not for world peace or some of that shit, and if they actually decide to do something, they just send a nasty letter and call for peace while people continue killing each other.
    >> Anonymous 06/13/10(Sun)19:13 No.1345688
    >>1345511

    this is how it works:

    1. shitstorm in Country X
    2. UN Security Council agrees to deploy peacekeeprs to Country X
    3. UN requests units from memberstates
    4. memberstates deploy units from their militaries as "UN Peacekeepers" in Country X

get it? you can't join UNP because they don't actually exist. you can join your national military and hope that your unit gets deployed as part of a UN operation. Then you'll be an UNP...

Meanwhile in said country: People die.
    >5. UN agrees to condemn it even more
    Even more people die.

    whatever bro

What I'm trying to explain is that there is no "UN Peacekeeper Force" that you can join

I seriously had no idea that people thought this was the case.

Did you think they were some fancy international unit like Rainbow Six or G.I. Joe???

UN Peacekeepers are regular soldiers from national armies that have been deployed as part of an UN operation...

The genocide law is completely bollocks.

Even recently, regarding Sudan, they refuse to act, instead labeling the massacres as acts of genocide, which irremediably leads to the question of how many acts of genocide does it take to make genocide?

Well they never did do anything about Sudan, and if nobody's dying there anymore, it must be because the arabs sucessfully killed all the black population.
    Stay humanitarian, UN.

The UN and especially peacekeeping missions are a racket for most members.

Jesus, what is it you faggots use this "implying" trend to interpret everything as you like?

He didn't IMPLY the UN did anything useful in the balkans at all, he merely said these were the UN's excuses for not helping Rwanda; that is, that they thought that "not being being white nor european as the balkans" was the UN's idea of an acceptable excuse not to help a country on the verge of a civil massacre.

Just think twice before you write your shit, seriously.

Well, aren't you a tard? Brazilian (UN) forces did the best they could and actually criticized French and Canadian harsh approaches. They were actually well liked in many places and the brazilian troops were the only ones who didn't need tanks to go inside or patrol the giant slums like port-au-prince.

My cousin actually became a godfather while serving there, because ever since his contingent came to haiti they were able to pacify and maintain order in the district at which this lady inhabited ever since she was born.

He was devastated about the earthquake tho. I could only reach him by phone since he's been stationed in another state, but he sounded like shit.

    >The Brazilian military has responsibility for leadership of the UN military forces in Haiti and is authorized to use deadly force. They are at the top of the command structure and their influence on the overall mission should not be understated. More importantly, there is a direct parallel between Brazilian military tactics utilized by UN forces in Haiti and similar military-style assaults used by the police in their own country.
The Brazilian military police have been accused of firing indiscriminately in the poor slums of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro called favelas. This was highlighted in an Amnesty International report "Brazil: They come in Shooting: Policing socially excluded communities," released on December 2, 2005

Not all angels, but not all devils. It's easy to criticize from your chair.

If it's so easy to fight crime in a country where 80% of the population hasn't got a legal job and some people are so poor they actually eat mud cookies to stop feeling hungry. They get our troops, throw them in the middle of the chaos and say "oh, if Haiti will calm down, we will maybe think about investing and maybe creating some jobs".

And don't come using facts about the urban police actions in rio and sp to back up accusations made to the military force in Haiti, these are two completely different forces in completely different situations. The relationship the urban police has with the traffickers in these cities is far more complex and older.

    >"We saw helicopters shoot at us, our houses broken by the tanks," Guerrier told IPS. "We heard detonations of the heavy weapons. Many of the dead and wounded were found inside their houses. I must tell you that nobody had been saved, not even the babies. The Red Cross was not allowed to help people. The soldiers had refused to let the Red Cross in categorically, in violation of the Geneva Convention." Several residents told IPS that MINUSTAH, after conducting its operations, evacuated without checking for wounded.

PLEASE STOP LETTING THAT TROLL GET YOU BRAZILFAG. god damn bro.

The UN is a failure. it requires drastic reform at all levels and the loss of veto powers for permenant members. It requires that countries be mandated under the threat of economic/political punishment to provide troops once they promise to do so.

It is a fucking joke. the UN stands around watching the world drown in bloods then spends 2 years aruinging what kind of paper their "strong worded response" should be written on.

OP if you want a join a humanitarian security organization that helps the world and requires trained military people then create your own. gather buddies and create your own. Fuck the UN

No, in fact, people like you who sit behind a computer, read some freshly googled shit and start criticizing instead of analyzing what could have been done and what CAN be changed, i.e., instead of having an argument besides pointless finger-pointing, you are the reason all the bad shit keeps going on.

The landing of troops wasn't the best option? Agreed 100%. Jobs and investment would be. But that's not the UN's business. They just send troops there, as I said before, to deal with people living on sub-human conditions.
You think the brazilian military are heartless demons killing children? They believe they are doing something necessary, most of hem have lived (if not currently have families living) in favelas, they know what crime can do to a slum, they want shit to get better and they are doing the best they can. bitch they are not even racist like european troops, seen they ARE mostly black too, and come from a poor to low-middle-class background.

And why I know that? because I've actually been talking to soldiers and reading the info I get, both from opposition and from the military.
