And you shouldn't just crop out a body just because it's hard or has problems. That doesn't fix or teach you anything. Redline guy did a nice construction for you. Did you save the picture? Did you study it to see how the balance was fixed?

>>
>>1360132
>i don't want to waste the work i've put in it
Well, you did. Accept that and move on. As a general rule, if you're every doing a fully polished artwork, whether it be painting, tight linework, etc, you should have thumbnails done well before hand. Know that the composition, values, colors, gesture, etc, work well before you sink your time into it in the future.

>painting and drawing with a mouse is a chore
Work traditionally for the time being then. You shouldn't be using an ineffective tool.

---------------------

>>1360166

It looks to me like you went a little too heavy with the eyelids. Redo them, but zoom in and use a small brush. The shading underneath the (camera)left one is much farther down than the one on the right, which makes it look misaligned. The nose seems a little bit too tilted right for how tilted the head actually is. The head also requires shading on the sides. It looks a bit flat.
>>
>>1360178
Thanks. I haven't gotten very far into this, so I'll fix the shading as I go along, keeping those points in mind. first stop: nose and mouth.

Some of the highlights you have going are working pretty well like on the hind legs but the forms are still coming off as pretty flat. The underbelly and "meaty" parts of the legs could use some paneling to round them out.

Lookin cool though
>>
>>1360248
Firstly, thank you for the reply, secondly, pardon my ignorance, but if you were to go about this, how would you keep the forms from coming away looking so flat? Is it simply a matter of lighting and shadow, or is there something else you see that you would do to correct this problem? Also, when you say paneling, does that mean to round out the edges, or are you meaning something else when you say paneling?

It's both, really. Shade the different forms as the geometric shapes they are and think about how they work on each other to add more midtones and highlights. The paneling is something you're already doing somewhat with your white highlights but think of when you use wrapping lines on a gesture drawing to make it appear 3d. Since we're dealing with machinery, you can use lines like that as if it's the creases between sheets of metal wrapping around a surface. Spherical shapes aren't often made with one sheet of pounded metal but various segments of curved sheets.

I'm doing character design but as you can see, it is not going very well. I spent too much time working on the face and didn't see how stupid the pose is. I haven't worked at all on the composition as well. Thus, I consult thee for guidance.

She is supposed to be Summix, the lonely warrior princess of a once great but now fallen kingdom. (Sci-fi, not fantasy btw) I want to introduce her by drawing her in the middle of a battlefield with her side losing.

>How should I go about with the pose and composition?

Also, I'm not sure if this is the right thread for character design but if it isn't, please direct me and I will delete this post.

>>

this looks actually fine if you add some details on the dragon and rider. It's good enough I would say.
It isn't 100% clear what's going on, I guess the dragon is surprised by a sudden outburst of the foreground volcano?
The figures seem to be a bit too far away from the fire to really have such a heavy reaction, so I'm not sure if I'm seeing this the right way.
You could put the figures near the pillar of fire, but that would require a lot of painting.
Or you could put the volcano near the figures but that would endanger the overall composition and the fine details you've already painted.

You could learn out of it for the next painting.
The technique you've used is somewhat inefficient and now you're stuck with the composition with little flexibility left.

The clouds, head of the beast and the mountain on the left look hand-painted. So I'm guessing that you zoom in at an earlier stage and begin to drift away with rendering?
If that's true, then you can easily loose all control over composition, light and focal points.
Put your picture at a grey scale and it becomes a mush. You'll need to do a whole lot of messing around with curves and masks to get that right again.

The better way would be to work hierarchically, starting from big to small. You surley did small thumbnails (if not, do it). Then you need to paint all the necessary shapes on your canvas and thinking about direction, silhouettes and light. If you have your shapes, don't zoom in and refine this stage in a thoughtful way.
Zoom in at the very last minute, if your overall picture looks good as a thumbnail.

Here's John K on Frank Frazettas compositon: http://johnkstuff.blogspot.de/2009/01/frazetta-caricatures-composition.html
As a rule of thumb, a composition really looks good if the shapes are clear and read well even at a really small size.
(there are exceptions like "Where's Waldo?" or Eboys art, but these never look dramatic)

Good luck anon!

nice work.
Perhaps you may add some clouds on the sky as it is too blank

Problem where the nasal bone meets the frontonasal structure.

Forearm issues as well. From wrist to mid-forearm its a rectangle (yours looks too flat/wide) then shifts to a cylindrical form which you did not delineate well.

I agree with the anon who mentioned in the Sketchbook Thread that the splatter is an unfortunate background choice.

your lines suffer from chicken scratch, which is a symptom of lack of confidence and poor line control. Concentrate on your construction.

boobs and feet still feel off to me

Just curious, are you the dude that has the monkey wrench girl drawing?
>>

lower the right boob (her left)
>>
>>1360752

boobs are still off, but then a gain describing form with outlines may in this case be misleading

same for the foot. it can be with the heel slightly off the ground (in which case it wouldn't be off) .

try adding a shadow to the food to make its position more clear (if it is elevated at the back)

Everything. Fuck, man, figure draw more.

Even for desu shit, that face is godawful. You clearly can't draw a neck, a head, or any part of the face.

Strike bitch?

Where far tit meets shoulder, needs more flesh. missing the connecting muscle.

Feel like clavicles too thin as well.

Pretty good colors, nice expression.

I feel like there is too much stuff going on to the right but I don't really know that much about composition either. I wish I could see more of that awesome background volcanoe.
>>
>>1360833
Are those supposed to be clouds or mountains in the background? I can't tell. Your primary light source comes from the right, but there are still forms hit from the left, like the nose of that face. It's a bit better though. At least more defined shapes thanks to the cast shadows.
>>
>>1360840
The're supposed to be clouds. The light is supposed to come from the left, here's something that might be better. I can't draw :/

understanding the planes of the eyesocket, nose and mouth a lot better. The cheekbone is still kind of puzzling because it's so ridiculously different in each person. My rendering still sucks but its getting better, just need to really understand the forms of the face more. I downloaded an Asaro head model in Zbrush for reference since I can't afford the actual model, and it's awesome.

I'd look at the calf muscles, right now, they look flat. Just a LITTLE bit of a muscle Even it's just a little curve on the outer edge of the legs.

Otherwise, it's a lovely piece.

More portrait attempt/studies. Laid the photo over the most similar part of the sketch and redlined to compare inconsistencies. I notice I have a hard time recognizing the correct angles for proportions, especially when mounting the nose things get all fucked up. Thoughts, anyone? Might just be a matter of grinding out portraits but if i'm overlooking something that might help my recognition I'd like to hear it.
