    219 KB Unofficial /ic/ Survival Guide 05/11/11(Wed)13:04 No.954199
This is for everyone who is considering seeking critique or input from /ic/, this is just my laughable attempt to help out people who have no idea what they are getting into.
    1) Beware of Trolls, (This is 4chan after all), let that sink in...
    >BEWARE OF TROLLS
    2) Be prepared to have whatever you post ripped to shreds. If you consider what you are posting the awesomest thing ever, it is our job to show you that you are wrong and how you can improve yourself. The journey to mastery is NEVER ENDING.
    3) You should not expect praise for your work, this is not a place to get a pat on the head or to feel good about yourself, this board is to get you to improve. If you do recieve praise consider the context and either feel thankful or dismiss as troll.
    4) In your OP TELL US WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. You may get ignored, but those who are actually trying to help will usually read this and attempt to answer your questions.
    5) DO NOT tell us that something took you ____ hours/minutes etc and do not use that as an excuse when you get critique, no one cares how much time you spent on it.Do NOT post simple sketches and doodles, unless you are specificially looking for tips on process. The work will speak for itself.
    6) While we are on the subject, unless you like the trolls, don't defend your work unless asked a direct question about a choice you made. Trying to fight back against critique you think is unfounded is troll bait of the sweetest kind and will help your thread devolve into chaos. Telling us you weren't trying very hard or it was a quick sketch is no excuse, don't bother. Again, THE WORK WILL SPEAK FOR ITSELF. If you don't like specific crit don't respond to it.
    >TL DR: BEWARE OF TROLLS, KEEP DRAWING, Read the advice given and either ignore it or take it to heart, the choice is yours. Attempts at proving that you were right all along are best made by posting newer/better work at a later time.

What the fuck is this, a teenage drama?

This >>954199 followed by info on books etc; threads NOT to make ( a la our current sticky)... Let's just say that would be more helpful to new comers and/or everyone else, than anything I've seen stickied the last 5 years on here.

no need to be stickied if people keep bumping it like this.

Those two b& stickies should be deleted, they just pollute the front page. Make this a stickie instead.

Also, to be more on topic, /ic/ is not for requests, and especially not free commissions. It's not our work, but your tattooist's to design your tattoo.

    >no one cares how much time you spent on it
I do. Given enough time, anyone could draw perfection. Time is an essential part of the process. I want to know how much time it took because then I can give pointers towards how to speed up the process. I mean if somebody posts a picture of a stickman and says it took them an hour to draw it then there's obviously a problem. It's just essential information that can tell a lot about the process, you know? But obviously it shouldn't be used as an excuse. But that's given: no excuses!

Another thing I want to say:
As an artist becomes better, they becomes less protective of their art. Worrying about getting one's copyrights violated and being defensive of genuine criticism is a sign of weakness common to many no-so-good artists.

You know you've become pretty damn good when it doesn't fucking matter if /ic/ throws your work out with a single 'sucks' reply and a 404. A true artist will try again, only to become better.

If you want to make this a sticky, at least make it short and concise, as well as too the point. no one likes reading blocks of text.

i'll make an example in a bit.

if you don't like reading text, why use words at all? It's an image board, I hope your example is all images....

I love reading dude, but I hate it when people don't know how to write. When you write, you have to be sure to space stuff out and get to the point, especially so if you're on an image board.

You have to present information in a way that's easy to digest and doesn't have people grumbling "oh fuck, another wall of text".

    Just my opinion really.
    > I hope your example is all images
And now, this is just silly, even if I do present it as an image, it'll still have plenty of text. It's not so much as not liking to read, but more that I dislike the way it is displayed. Graphics really have nothing to do with it.

This is for everyone who is considering seeking critique or input from /ic/, this is just my laughable attempt to help out people who have no idea what they are getting into.

    1. Beware of Trolls. They mostly post threads about bad artists on deviantart, trying to incite mad or make themselves feel better about their own artistic stagnation. They should be ignored.

    2. If you post art, be prepared for people to call you on all your fuck-ups. No, must of us don't care if you're 15, autistic, "took just 10 minutes" or whatever else you use as an excuse as to why your drawings suck. Instead of getting mad at critiques and defending your work, accept the critique and try to see where it's coming from, try to learn.
