Your image makes the cheekbones appear higher, gives the illusion there is less baby fat. Use value to make the cheeks a little more rotund.
Also, your eye needs to move. Down and inward.

Nothing at all special atm, spent all day taking a break from digital work to get back to basics.

The result was about 30+ sketches like this one.

I'm basically trying to re-work the way I see proportions, because lately I've been all out of whack. Take this pic for example.. It's horribly wrong. (Ignoring the blatantly obvious right shoulder)

I think the cheek looks better but if you check the values the lips really shouldn't be that dark.

Also the mouth looks like it's drawn from the front, the line you've used for the outside of the nose next to the nostril should be pointing downward instead of upwards and you put a white dot on her tit.

By all means you're more proficient than I'll ever be but these are the errors I noticed.

    >I think the cheek looks better but if you check the values the lips really shouldn't be that dark.

I thought it be cool to have a darker look but your right I should really lighten it up, especially to show contrast with the hair.

    >Also the mouth looks like it's drawn from the front, the line you've used for the outside of the nose next to the nostril should be pointing downward instead of upwards and you put a white dot on her tit.

I'll try to play around with the mouth some more. It took me a long time to see what you were saying about the nose, but I see it now, thanks!

    >By all means you're more proficient than I'll ever be but these are the errors I noticed.

No way dude, you can do this too. I just started my studies last week. I just went to town on posemaniacs at first, and went through a shit ton of youtube videos on drawing. I used this tutorial to learn how to paint http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abgTcIcsRMQ. It looks way more complex than it actually is, though this piece took a really long time for me considering it was my first of a figure from real life.

Some other videos that really helped were from Vilppu:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqxMMEUvtJc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iw4VI8mctw (used the same process to make the drawing I posted here)

Mind you, when i say you have to do something, I really mean if I were you. :)

    1) Remove the dark line, instead, shade it. Too heavy of lines can totally throw off a pic, in the real one, she looks feminine, in yours, her arm looks kind of muscular.

    2) I'd just make this darker, collar bone is a feminine aspect that should be taken full advantage of

    3) I dunno why these lines are there

    4) Her boobs don't stick out far enough for this. get rid of the line, instead add a heavy shade.

    5) Add that line, very feminine line.

    6) Get rid of that line, add shade instead

    7) yours bulges out, and the stomach shading makes her look chubby

    8) This line goes up too far, notice on the real picture, it stops, then shading starts, but curves upwards, very sexy feature, you should definitely add that.

Also, boobs you made larger, so that might be why that boob line is there, idk, if you're drawing this knowing that girl will see it, you probably shouldnt make her titties larger, if it's just a random pic though, i agree with your choice of a slight breast enlargement. Also, you made the nipples too small.

    Nice though

I would really look at how things match up, look for relationships that form on the body.

Where the curve of her ribcage meets up if you look directly to her other side.
Where her jaw meets up in relation to her nipple or belly button.
Where her inner elbow meets up with her forehead.

Pic shows a few crude examples.

Youre still drawing a lot of guesswork, look at the subject more than your drawing.

Why start getting super detailed if your not getting her form down correctly.

    >your not so realistic work looks really akward

Yes, I'm aware. As ironic as it may sound, I'm hoping someone can actually explain to me how to draw anime without it being "random guessing of oversizing head and eyes in hopes of it turning out KAWAII UGUU". I'm also hating the vectors, but in the end, those seem to be a lot more popular amongst people.

    >(btw, what the fuck is happening in this picture?)

Eh, long story. In short, am poorfag, got a free tablet, now hoping to cash in a bit on my hobby amongst a certain niche group. The background is barely just slabbed in so I don't forget what I'm drawing, but it's gonna be a city by the time I'm done... I hope.

actually your redlines are not 100% right, I know it sounds crazy but imagine a world where some women have not perfectly slim legs, i know sounds crazy huh, making legs and hips a bit bigger than the "ideal model" improves the image of "fecundity" in the eyes of most male watchers.

But to give you credit, since the author probably intendet to make her look cute slim legs work more in the direction of chlidlike characteristics.

(pic related:) if you would just see the body, would you think its anime? imo the only real difference is the head/face, thats all (i think it could also only be the eyes), but what you see in generic anime is a stronger stylization with outlines, hard shadows, bigger head, overall changed proportions, simplified anatomy, etc. and those elements can be seen in some pictures more then in others, or they arent there at all, but its still called anime.

It's mostly impotent rage. That kind of realistic painting, the detail, the Renaissance feel to the colors, I feel like I really hold that in high regard. And then whoever made it throws on an almost skewed stylized face and that's what makes me angry. If I could manage that kind of realism, I wouldn't settle for less than that on the face.

It's like reading a well-written book with a shit story. With that kind of writing talent, I could produce an epic saga that would be felt through the ages. Wasted talent? Something like that.

But I don't want to say that about the picture, exactly. It isn't wasted talent, it's just skill that I wish I possessed so I could divert it to something else. It goes deeper than animu ruins everything, because it doesn't ruin everything, and the image isn't bad. It's fine. I'm...not making any sense. But whatever, IM MAD SO I DONT HAVE TOO ETC

I would rather have a fine delicate balance between the two. So some times you'll work more on traditional and other times more on the tablet. It has really helped me.

The most important thing is that you draw as much as you possibly can! There were some times i wanted to give up but i kept at it. Just drew after some characters and then it looked good on paper. Helped me get my self-asteam going really well.

My first impression was that the hand was a mass of melted flesh from the rockets hitting the dude's legs.

You can fix that to some extent by varying your line weight. Give things in the foreground darker/thicker lines and they'll read as being farther forward.

Your perspective for the buildings and the figures isn't the same.

Pretty sure you're going for a really foreshortened pose, since the feet and legs are so small. If you add that onto the existing torso, though, it'll look like she's doing the limbo. So if you're trying for a foreshortened top-down pose, redraw in perspective.

If that's not what you're doing or you don't want to draw the torso over, the feet and legs are way too small. From a front view, the crotch is going to be around halfway up the body. Put your foot on your forearm and notice its size.

How do you draw over grayscale? I'm trying to figure this out and I'm at a lost. Is it just an overlay with a solid color over it? Or are you still varying the intensity/value? Opacity pressure or no?

yes, that's exactly what i mean.
    There are 9 grayscale values
from white to black, the first three are the light values, the second are midtones, the third are the darkest, assuming you already know that you use values only up to the maximum midtone value, the values from the darkest can be used for small accents only.Nothing in this world is pure black or pure white, our world ranges in midtones mostly during daylight, that's the main reason why it often looks unnatural if you use too much black or too much white.

I know you guys love to stress the usefulness of Loomis books, but I'd just like to provide my personal input.

I am now 5 hours into the "successful drawing" book, and I would like to say HOLY SHIT. This perspective portion is a fucking lexicon of confusion. Crazy walls of text and insane drawings made with lines, compasses, t-lines?, etc, etc. Am I going to be a failure if I skip this shit and move on to other things like easier to understand things? I don't feel like making a college level course out of learning the basics and getting a feel for things. I feel like this book is something I might need in say.. A few years when I have a better grasp of the basics maybe? I need some input here.

Make the background pitch black, and get rid of the cheek bone. Since you can't see the edge of the cheek, you decided to make up a line where you think it should go.

The moment you start to make shit up is when you start to fail.

Ok man I just post my problem here because I don´t thinks its important enough for a new thread...
I´m new to drawing and I´m overwhelmed by it. I give you an example. When you learn playing guitar, you first learn the notes/tabs, then the chords, maybe powerchords etc. , but when you want to learn drawing they give you a pencil and say "Draw this!". I tried to read loomis, but after 20minutes I just thought "OK goddamn, i know how to draw a fuckn circle!" What is a good structured start into the world of drawing? >,>
Pic kinda related, just practising blending (no critique needed)

    tl;dr - I´m a pussy, how do I start?

    >>904654
You said it yourself. In music, you learn the basics (reading notes, scales, tabs, etc).

In drawing, you learn the basics as well- shapes, motherfucker, do you know them?

Everything in life is comprised of shapes. So go draw some moar circles, because I don't think you know what you're doing yet.

Perspective is a bitch, but you'll need it eventually if you want to create depth and draw anything that isn't completely organic.

Loomis's perspective isn't for beginners, as he notes on page 29. Look around for authors who describe it more simply, practice making boxes until you're really good at it, and come back to Loomis's perspective later.

In addition to this, start trying to draw things around you. Sketch people around you. Don't worry about being perfect. Keep careful note of your mistakes. Remember that everything exists in three-dimensional space and relates to a simpler geometric form. If you never pick up a guitar, you'll never learn how to play.

Thank god. I was thinking it was his beginner approach to perspective, and it started out with circular objects and all the crazy stuff. I completely missed the reference he talked about somehow and it seems like it will be my best bet since I want total beginner stuff. My main question is when drawing characters that don't have a really intricate background/environment around them, how important is perspective study? I'm trying to further myself to the point where I can see some kinds of results before I get too much into the books and study aspect. The fun to me is seeing my progress and creating pictures that I enjoy while I study. Even if they suck. Loomis talks about perspective like it's the most needed building block in all the drawing kingdom. I think I remember that he uses blocks to map out his anatomy, but isn't it much easier to simply use more basic shapes and get a feel for foreshortening while building a mental library of how certain parts are supposed to look and such? Or I guess I'm just looking for answers to something that is simply unanswerable, and should find the answer through experimentation.

I'm overwhelmed by all the aspects of art, and I'm a perfectionist.. That might be my downfall.

perspective applies everytime, even when you working without perspective lines.
I don't have a techique i use generally for placing characters. sometimes i just draw the sketch contours straight in sometimes i use more perspective lines or boxes or whatever... just when i got the feel i'll need it.
