Sci-fi stuff. I haven't done anything like this since I was 8 years old but I plan to do a lot more.

The perspective seems kind of wierd, but it looks fine without the colour. I think I just need to tweak that atmospheric perspective.

And don't bother redlining the woman or lecturing me on specific anatomy since it's just a placeholder for now. Any advice on making the scene more interesting is welcome!

Other sci-fi stuff I've done over the last month. I'm trying to come up with cool aliens that would work as main characters so I am deliberately making them a bit tame. I just don't care about aliens that don't walk on two feet!

Practicing expressions because I've definitely stagnated in that regard. This was particularly for expressions that distort the shape of the face.
After a few dozen more sheets I'm going to start including head tilt, then enhancing with perspective and then incorporating the expression with body language, but I think I need a better grasp on the depth of the mouth and eye sockets before working on that.

A few issues going on here. Her arms aren't doing what is necessary to hold all of the things she has. Her upper arms are too short, her grip on the umbrella is too loose and the arm furthest into the background makes no sense.
The blue totoro is drooping on the left side leading him to be a little bit crooked. The colors are desaturated (which is probably intentional) but still has muddy values (which detracts from the image as a whole and doesn't offer us a focal point.
If you were to put the circular sign in perspective instead of having it flat towards the viewer it would make that section of the image more interesting and remove this giant dark blotch that the eye is drawn to.
Her legs aren't drawn in a way that suggests walking, she looks more like she is standing with one foot behind her. Look at a few references of walking at a calm pace and I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a few of the cues that imply forward motion.
The powerlines in the background are tilted inwards, whether this is intentional or not I don't know but it does seem odd (though I can't quite put my finger on it.

I can't think of much else to say. Hope this was helpful!

    >>876740
Wow,that's a really thought out comment.
The powerlines and desaturated colours are intentional.Anything related to the body (gestures, weight, posture, pose, anatomy) is one of my weakness.Glad that /ic/ has shown me some good books by Vilppu and Loomis; still reading and drawing now.I dont understand the 'If you were to put the circular sign in perspective' though.Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for spending some time to write that out.It is really helpful.

Yeah, I kind of struggled with the wording for that. What I mean is that instead of having the sign face on, tilt it back towards the vanishing point. Like a more extreme version than the image I've attached. It's just that signs are made to pay attention to, and as this one isn't the focus of the image it distracts the viewer.
As I said, having the image desaturated isn't a problem, but your values (the difference between the light and dark parts of your image) are muddy and grey. Getting more contrast in there will help you distinguish your focal points more easily and lead to a more believable picture.
Also, as things approach the vanishing point they get lighter, you could definitely show this with the powerlines, having the one furthest back be lighter than those in the foreground. I also assume that the powerlines are tilted because they're falling over/dilapidated? I would recommend having them tilting different ways, then in order to create a more disorganized look.

No problem! I woke up three hours early today for some reason so I'm just kind of futzing around on the internet. Glad to have something helpful to do, haha.

    >>876745
addendum: although you're going for a desaturated look, it's still not recommended that you shade with just darker and less saturated versions of your main colors. I'm no expert on color theory, etc so here is a link to help you out:

I dunno how /ic/ handles links but I've been banned on other boards for linking to websites so I'm always a bit paranoid, haha.

The hair is actually pretty well modeled; it gives a good sense of three dimensionality. Work on understanding the structure of the face, and you will be able to more easily apply that same level of modeling. As for skin tones, look to different painters and how they treat facial skin tones. I take a liking to Cezanne's paintings and style, but you could look at just about any other artist to get a good feel for it.

Some reds, pinks and some colder, saturated colors for the skins. A bit of orange for the hair.

But most importantly, you need to study the actual structure of the face.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/11(Thu)16:42 No.876937
    >>876927
no...no it is not. It's just all parallel strands with no defined sections or highlights, it's all just mixed in a big huge clusterfuck. Skin is not that yellow. I would find an image of natural skin tones for you but since you are on the internet, I will make you do it yourself. Basically, more red tone, and less saturated.

In a glimpse it reminded me of Leyendecker when I saw the thumb and then I saw the rest of your post, so it's definately recognisable color wise and such.

I love Leyendecker to death, but doing his brush strokes digitally is going to be quite hard because you're really mimicing the effect. I mean, you'd have to.. process those strokes with special edges? to look like Leyendeckers. Instead of the effect coming naturally with the strokes.

You were using Photoshop right? If you are who I think you are... I'm curious if Painter has something that would help

First thing I've drawn in months. Completely unmotivated to do anything art related. Can't draw anything interesting without a reference, and even then it feels more like copying rather than just using it as an aid. I don' even learn anything from it. Kinda stopped caring about art, though it does feel kinda shitty to spend so much time for the past 19 years of my life doing this bullshit for nothing.

Whatever, I suppose. It's not as if I can afford to do anything else I'm interested.

I like it.The way you painted the armor. The shinguard is nicely done, how it reflects the surface of the sand. The colouring overall is nice too. However, the neck is probably too long, and her shoulders looks kinda wonky.Only my opinion thogh;not an expert on anatomy.Lastly, I hope you would define the hands more rather than making it look like she's wearing boxing gloves.

I don't really consider myself to have a style yet; although I do really enjoy and respect Vert-is-Ninja and Makani's works a lot, I don't really draw influence from them (except, perhaps, in how they essentialize their lines). I am still working considerably at getting down the basics of anatomy, perspective, setting, color, foreshortening, yadda yadda. This is just kind of the point where I am in my art. Eventually I may begin developing a style but I feel like that won't come up for a while, haha.
As it stands, yesterday I did about 7 or so pages of pure anatomical sketching and gesture work and today I'm going to do that + perspective work.
And so while I appreciate your comment, I guarantee I'm working on it. :3

Don't have any more digital work yet, so you get BEEEES. Drawn in ~3 minutes, reffed.

    gogogo with those anatomical sketches!

I didn't know Vert-is-Ninjas stuff from my head so I noticed that she is a tad bit more cartoony, but the resemblance to Makunu is very close (not only expression-wise but also characterdesignwise, girl with elbow in face looks like her take on female Heavy. Tumblr is down so I can't give proof). That's all no problem, just be aware of this and ask yourself if you want this.

Ahaha, I know her take on fem-heavy. I've drawn her version several times +spoken with Makani about her design. Not to mention the girl with the elbow in her face is my take on fem-heavy.

Pic related, although not mine. A friend of mine drew our three fem-heavies together. Hers on the left, Makani's in the middle, and mine on the right.

I don't really see the resemblance between my character and Conrad either. With the exception of the fact that he has dark hair (styled differently) and glasses, mine is more angular, emaciated, and has a completely different personality.
I say these things not to be defensive, as I'm sure that your comments were benevolent, but simply as a response. I do want to eventually develop into my own style but as I said, I don't consider myself as having a style yet.

    >>877397
I am planning on doing that soon! But first I want to tamp down some issues I have with specific features of the face that I mentioned (the orbit/socket of the eye, depth and placement of the mouth and teeth)

i dont consider myself an experienced artist or something, especially not digitally, but one thing id say is that it looks like you should use another layer for the constructional components, such as the sphere or the axes, next time. erasing it out afterwards is much more work and more likely to see i guess

Your drawing technique looks like those smudgy pencil drawings you always see. Why don't you block in in with more contrast and blend it down from there? It seems to lack a little shape.

    >>877814
Very well executed. As for background I would go with some low key foliage.

    >>877887
I think you started painting too early. Throw that layer away and start working on your lineart more. I suggest you keep in mind drawing in space and really polish up on your construction. Good attempt so far!

    >>877903
    That's rad.

    >>877967
