pillow shading, harley looks about two years older than robin, everyone has very weak chins. the composition is boring. none of the characters are doing something of interest or relating to one another. draw your own damn background instead of using prefabricated brushes and textures that clash with the style of rendering in the foreground. they all more or less have the same body type.

your art is boring and mundane. work on improving your ability to draw. work on drawing images with an idea behind it.

I like your work, people get paid to do stuff thats much worse than that.

And did you draw and color the whole thing yourself? Because if did your coloring is pretty good. Perhaps your should team up with someone who does better ink and get a job doing colors.

Personally i think going towards more realistic, or something more "individual" is always better than trying to copy styles that are already everywhere. Try more realism, or try doing this but more gritty and sloppy so people are like "whoa.. its so bad its great". And also, why would you set yourself up for this when you know this site is full of cockless trolls?

you need to develop your skills more. Your primary issue is not a mistake you made in producing your work, but rather the very knowledge you base your artistic ability on. You don't need to fix this picture, you need to improve upon your fundamental skills. There is nothing you can fix here. It contains flaws so fundamental that to rectify them would require knowledge you could not possibly have.
    >> Anonymous 11/05/09(Thu)15:16 No.509282

I think Batman doesn't look broad or chunky enough. His neck and those surrounding muscles that connect it to his shoulders (whatever they're called) should be much bigger. Make him look fucking MEAN! He's the goddamn Batman.

Nightwing looks a bit womanly if you ask me. A more square jaw and bigger, more defined muscles could fix this. Also, ad more pure blacks to Batman and Nightwing so they stand out better.

Harley's face is REALLY unsymmetrical and her shoulders are a bit square, taking away from her usual curvy sexiness. Her collar thing is a bit weird looking too.

The whole area between Joker's neck and shoulders is a bit too flat too. OK, his suit has shoulder pads, but an small crinkle or two would help and put dat collar son! It doesn't stick out enough. His body looks kinda flat too. Add some more crinkles and creases to his suit.

Robin looks ok as far as I can tell. As for the colouring, it's pretty damn good. The hair looks great on all of them, the only thing you could do to improve it (as I said earlier) is to ad darker blacks to Batman and Nightwing. But don't worry about that for now. Focus on your drawings before you colour anything. Some general proportioning practice would be of great benefit. And try some fun poses too. Right now it looks like a boring family portrait. Maybe have Batman get Joker in a chokehold while Harley pulls at his mask, or something. It's up to you.

And be sure to re-draw this because you've got some great potential son.

You've memorized those positions, amiright? If we asked you to lower the viewer's point of view three feet I doubt you'd be unable to. This is because you've been memorizing the shapes of your characters, instead of learning the forms.

The only way to improve is to stop drawing stylized cartoons asap. Look at the damage it's done to you already. Learn how to draw a realistic human male and then stylize the proportions into Batman. It's how every good comic book artist does it, and the longer you keep drawing the cape shape instead of understanding how cloth works, the slower you will improve.

Stop pretending to draw and draw.

Don't stop drawing stylized cartoons. Start drawing realism and from life along side drawing stylized cartoons. Then you can still do the art style you actually like to do and get better at it step by step.

    This.
/ic/'s catchphrase of "STUDY REALISM" is just a cop out for not giving real advice. Saying you shouldn't draw cartoons until you've mastered realism is like saying you shouldn't take SAT II Math until you've mastered Linear Algebra. By that logic, no one should draw cartoons under the age of 50. You don't have to stop drawing cartoons completely to get better, just observe and study both simultaneously.

there is nothing wrong with augmenting your understanding of the fundamentals while developing your own style. it certainly wouldn't hurt for op to go out and learn a little structure and expressive figures.

People like OC are trapped by their own limited knowledge of stylization. By studying from life, it will give them both a solid foundation to build from and a better understanding of their own style.

When you read the ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT by RICHARD WILLIAMS, what you often see is mention of animation's deep connection with the portrayal of reality. Williams often mentions his disdain for cartoonists that limit themselves to a style because they only learned how to cartoon. The difference he saw between the works of Disney geniuses and their successors was the sudden loss of ability in drawing from life. This became an issue whenever he needed an animator to work out of their style. His understanding of the connection between reality and cartoon helped him deconstruct the medium.
"Life drawing is the antidote to this. When you're doing life drawing, you're all alone..."

"With life drawing there's no one to admire your efforts - rather the reverse. It's always shocking to find you're not as advanced or skilled as you thought you were, and since it's about the hardest thing to do with no rewards other than the thing itself - it's no wonder few do it or stick to it"

"But the fact remains that there is no replacement for the hard work of solid life drawing."

"There is one payoff and it is substantial - the gradual and fundamental improvement of all of one's work"

I'm not a master of cartooning or animation, but I at least understand that doing the same thing all the time won't lead to the same kind of improvements diversifying or life drawing would. The classical school or art is so deeply entrenched in anatomy and perspective etc because these were the things we've learned throughout the collective history of mankind. To discard that is much more momentous than you can imagine.

I know you're going to react by saying that this is pretentious, but these are the big sociological issues any artist has to face. Why do you think so many people draw from life? Art is an imitation of life. To disregard so much is at times alluring, but ultimately a flawed choice.
