This is a serious question, how does it sound like when a person who's not japanese wants to draw a manga? Really dumb and nerdy considering being a successful mangaka would be halfway to being a renowned artist?

I'm actually good at drawing since I started when I was 6, but unfortunately I've been wasting my time on games and a bunch of time wasters as well, though those help give me creativity on what to draw.

Query, OP: Did you draw the attached picture?

It's best when people stop worrying about whether or not they can do it, and just fucking do it. This sort of target is attainable. Very few Westerners have created comics that have taken off in Japan, but there's nothing stopping you from dominating the Western comic/manga market.

    Fuck.

Here's one thing about Japan- it might be a wonderful mecha of creativity and crazyness, but that's all a response to how fucking conformist the place really is. I'm not kidding, according to a recent poll "individuality" is the biggest threat to the current generation.

You're a foreigner, you stick out no matter what. You're a novelty. Everyone will want to talk to you. Everyone will stare at you and you'll feel like a celebrity, but go in for a job, especially in something as manga or illustration, and you'll get turned away. You'll go from the shiny gaijin to the evil foreigner that wants to steel natives' jobs. Most foriegners in Japan are teachers or work in bars or for American companies. That's just how the way it is.

Stay in the west and make it as a comic book artist here. It's still hard as hell, but at least you have a chance.

Trying to make "manga" in the west is comically easy compared to starting out as a Japanese artist, where it's actually seen as a career, and therefore has that many more people vying for jobs.

If you get a good grounding in figure drawing and life drawing, you could get a job animating or drawing comics in the west much, much more easily than in Japan.

It's quite horrible to see how many awful manga are drawn and publicized in germany. Every time I see those kawaiiishittyanatomy "manga" I want to vomit. WHY, the fuck!?

Look at an expensive poke'mon/yu-gi-oh card, Then compare it to a Magic the Gathering BASIC LAND CARD Art.

that's how its like when it comes to US. comics and jap manga imo.

    thats just my opinion anyways.

Angsty DEEP is what is killing art.

If you're going to make Manga styled stuff, do not move to Japan, it will make the potential of you getting a job working in the Manga field impossible, and you'll be shunned as an outsider. Japan is extremely EXTREMELY xenophobic.

I want to elaborate on why "Angsty deep" is killing art:

It makes art TOO elitist, of course not just anyone can have the time, patience and some sort of talent for making art, but that's no reason to see it as all art has to have a deep and society changing meaning that only the most educated can get, that just makes artists look like pretentious little douchebags without a real job.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)19:45 No.394977
Nothings killing art, nothing ever will.

There has always been shitty art that didn't end up mattering, and there has always been shitty morons who don't matter yet they think they have answers about art, with their foolhardy generalizations, opinion based "facts" and selfish bias.

All of it good for a laugh.

    this

and to OP, just draw. draw your pictures, your comics, anything. just draw them, don't worry if its nerdy, if you're renowned, whatever. you may not make money, or you may hit it big, but as long as you're enjoying what you create, and get better and better over time, you're set.

it doesn't matter how it sounds, really, just do what you do.

It sounds fine if the person in question knows what the hell they're doing. It sounds retarded if the person in question only "draws" copies of Yu-Gi-Oh screenshots.

    >that just makes artists look like pretentious little douchebags without a real job.

Artists ARE pretentious douchebags without real jobs. But they fulfill an important societal role. Imagine if art didn't exist. Would we be as emotionally, intellectually and even scientifically advanced as the species is today? Can you imagine not having furniture, architecture, television, music, films, magazines, clothing, books, fancy restaurants, cool shoes, corndogs, animation, loomis, or any other things that art has played an integral role in? We are emotional and social creatures. Art is as ingrained into our culture and well-being as any other developments in society. You're very misguided and miserly if you honestly think that not all art needs to be emotionally resonant. It does. Otherwise we have no use or connection to it. So to sum it up, yes, artists are fags, but that's okay because art is fucking awesome.
