    Hello there, /I see/.

I have a really simple question for you.

How do I stop drawing manga?

I'm your typical teenage anon, who was drawing till kindergarden, never was really good at it, but enjoyed it. Then I discovered manga, started watching anime. I did it for few years, and, obviously, I started drawing anime. Even though I don't watch and read a&m right now and have moved on I still draw in this fucking style.

I know that when you go to art college the first thing you hear is "DROP THAT JAPANESE BULLSHIT". But you have tutors and teachers. I do not. And I don't want to get into an art college, I don't want to make a living out of my pictures, I just do it because it brings me pleasure.

I'd like to develop some sort of style which would not be mangashit. How do I do that?

tl;dr HOW DOES I NOT DRAW MANGA

picture is sort of crap I draw.

research! expand your horizons. there's MUCH BETTER art beyond anime. sometimes i wish i never watched anime. it fucked me over. STAY AWAY FROM ANIME. anime is NEVER EVER EVER EVER taken seriously so if you want to be taken seriously as an artist, look to the past for master artists. here's a few to get you started:

glenn vilppu (great figure drawing tutorials)
    edward hopper
    j. c. leyendecker
    norman rockwell
    alphose mucha
    joaquin sorolla
    n. c. wyeth
    brom
    mary blair
    charley harper
    jim flora

Thank you! I will look into these.

Well, maybe I didn't wish I never saw any of this anime-crap, but I wish I didn't start DRAWING it. Fuck.

    I will, thank you.

Also, to >>333943 again. I don't care if I'm treated seriously, I just do it as a hobby, as I said. I'm just sick of this manga bullshit, but everything else I draw comes out just..wrong.

One thing that helped me stop drawing anime/manga crap was to learn anatomy.

After I got a better handle on anatomy I noticed how much my art used to suck because I would blame it on style.

    >>333957
I am already trying to draw proper anatomy from pictures, posemaniac, etc. But still, whenever I start drawing something without a ref, bam, huge eyes and no nose.

Could you post some of your pictures? Or something like before&after lrn2drawanatomy?

Drawing from your imagination requires knowledge of construction. I know people are tired of Loomis, but there you go. Once you know how to break up an oval into sections, you only draw eyes the size of dinner plates if you WANT them to look that way.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/09(Thu)20:01 No.333962
    >>333960

Uh, I didn't really know what Loomis was, so I googled it, and google gave me nothing. Google graphics, however...by Loomis you mean a guy who wrote a "how to draw proper anatomy" books?

I don't think I can get them in my country..but I might look for some other good book, that's a good idea, I guess.

Some where around the end of 2007 I started to learn anatomy. I still draw anime-y and have a long way to go to change but it does help to learn the basics of anatomy.

Also, just draw something that isn't anime then.

hey OP if you read any magazines im sure there are a bunch of pages with people in it. cut out heads/figures that interests you or could possibly help you. build up a reference guide for yourself

Thanks so much for the Loomis books!

    >>333976

Haha, oh wow, the 2007 pictures are bad. I'll try to put more proper anatomy into my pictures, it looks helpful.

I don't read magazines x__x I'd have to choose between some housewive shit, and, uh, teenage crap? I dunno. My gay friend has a bunch of fashion magazines though, I could use those to learn anatomy and different poses, I guess..

The trick is to be always self hating yet optimistic enough to want to improve.

I took life drawing classes and it was a large step in the right direction though I still have a long ways to go as pictured here.

Since most of animu's telltale signs are in the head and face you'll want to pay special attention to eye shape and nose structure and even the mouth. Keep in mind how noses, eyes and mouths are really shaped and see if you can work it in.

Eyes in mango almost always have the most effort in the entire face devoted to it, leaving both the mouth and nose (both still important parts of the face) mostly ignored and this brands you a weeaboo faggot until you address it and fix it. For the rest of the body you'll need to look at Loomis and such as the source of the problem usually lies in the head and fucked up proportions.

Best I can say for someone that doesn't take classes is to try doing some reference drawings of photos and attempt to apply the techniques you learned in your original work.

You'll hopefully notice a difference and stop taking shortcuts in favor of style. It really depends on how much the artist wants to change.

Oh god I lol'd at the first picture.

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind.

In order to stop drawing Animu, you stop drawing animu. It's that simple. If you don;t want to draw a certain way anymore, just draw another way. It's not even a case of needing to learn anatomy, it's your own choice. You should have at least that much control over your hand.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/09(Thu)22:12 No.334082
    >>334064

    No. It's not that easy.

I don't understand. You automatically draw something that you do not like?

Got any examples of your work? I'm curious because I'm starting to suspect unhelpful samefaggery in a lot of these threads. Prove you aren't a useless troll.

are you dumb? her whole art experience up to now has being just anime. if what she watches/reads is anime/manga, chances are she will draw anime/manga. its hard to draw anything else if that's the only thing she's been exposed to.

its like trying to kill off a bad habit that you've been doing for years.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/09(Thu)22:33 No.334101
    >>334093

Uh, yes, thank you. Also, it's hard to just come up with an eye that wouldn't look like those in manga, if you have no idea HOW.

It's like trying to imagine a new color.

And. Fuck. It's so obvious I am a woman.

Do some life drawing. That was what helped me the most - even quick charcoal studies.

The big breakthrough, for me, was doing drawings based not only on life but on light and shading rather than just the contours of things. Anime is, by default, very flat. You have outlines, maybe you have some shading inside those outlines, but overall it's flat.

Try to render a human figure, or a hand, or a face, or anything, using just patches of light and shadow. Resist the urge to outline. It'll help.

It's all in the mind Anon~

Unless you're one of those fools who think 'Anime' is a Genre/Actual-style-and-not-a-blanket-term-for-Japanese-cartoons-or-crappy-art-by-weaboos, of course. Personally, I don't care either way. One should be able to choose how they want to draw, and work toward that.

    >>334087

What? Already? The tripfag Guy was able to get away with ALOT more before you guys started whining. You say I'm trolling, but all I did was give my opinion, I didn't insult the OP or anyone in this thread. As such, you didn't have to answer it.

In any case, I stand by my point. If you don't want to draw a certain way, then just don't do it. The Japanese aren't making you a crappy artist, you are.

Oh, and have this repost. I'm tired, and I don't feel like uploading anything new today.
