I'm making a dating sim. I want it to cater to both genders and different kinds of sexual preferences. The style is semi-retro (not anime.) This is supposed to be a boy. I am a girl. I lack male anatomical referencs. Please crit! :)
    >> Anonymous 12/22/08(Mon)08:49 No.308231
Legs should be shorter than torso etc.
    >> -(:) 12/22/08(Mon)08:53 No.308233
His arms and posture look extremely unnatural! Is he supposed to be slouching or stretching or something? Hands can be hard, but please try a little harder! The one to our right isn't really even a hand, just fingers sprouting from the wrist!

OP here. Thanks for all the advice. The diagram helped a lot! And yes, 308233, you're right about the hands. I've made some slight changes...
308231: I also tried to make the legs shorter than torso thing, but he ended up looking very deformed. But I understood the point, since retro characters often have short legs. It just won't work on this guy.

Any more crits would be greatly appreciated!

PS: Not sure what "Donna" means, or what I should do about the feet, No.308262.

What exactly do you mean by retro? Retro what? A retro car is different to a retro coffee table. This a retro what?

Also, to reply to a certain post, you don't need to type >No.308262
or whichever person, just click on the actual number you want to reply to and it will automatically show up in your reply box. Read the FAQ and lurk the fuck more, NEWFAG!

    I don't think so buddy.

    Also, your drawing:
    1. torso is squished down. What's up with the scar down the stomach? C-section?
    2. arms are too short
    3. face is too wide.
    4. length of the thigh and shin very uneven (there should be equal amount of leg below and under the knee)
    5. center of gravity is way off. He's about to fucking fall over.

Thanks for the advice! I didn't know I could do that. As for retro, I mean the retro art drawing style. I don't want to list specific artists/works, since I don't want critiques based on how successfully I copied someone else's art. But retro art can be anything from Venture Bros to Dexter's Lab to those E-surance commercials...I just don't want to copy any of those sources.

Thanks for the advice! It was very helpful. I'll post the revised work once it's done. You may not like my idea, yet I only create things I'd play myself. I love dating sims, and I've played quite a few. My main gripe is lack of variety, especially with gender and sexual-orientation. My main goal is to offer some variety with my work. This doesn't mean everyone will like it--- just that it will just be a different kind of challenge. And I love those! Thanks for your advice.

Nope, still don't get what you mean by retro. I've never heard of "the retro art drawing style", mainly because it does not exist. As far as retro art is concerned unless you put a bit more specific. Retro is basically short for retrospective. Your picture is not retrospective cave painting, nor is it a retrospective of a baroque oils....what exactly is this "retro" retrospective of. What I'm trying to tell you is that "retro" is an adjective.

Retro is an art style. You can either hit google images with that keyword. Source:

you might want to look up some images of "retro" as you call it, because judging by the face of your halfnekkid dude, this is anime.

Avoid that terrible "new retro" book and look at real vintage cartoons and illustrations. Al Capp, Osamu Tezuka, cheap MAD Magazine paperbacks, and vintage Golden Books, all have strong vintage imagery.

All of their styles, and there are so many, can be incorporated into modern illustration.

If you're planning on making a dating sim, you might want to either a) hire a new artist, or b) learn how to balance your figures.

Feet are there to hold your body weight. Plant the feet on the ground, and make it appear as if they're bearing the weight of your character. There are other flaws as well, but the feet are so distracting right now.
