I don't know about you... but all I needed to do to get pen-pressure working was touching the "P" on the upper right corner of the drawing area. From there it was just a matter of adjusting the levels in the pop-up box. I don't think you need to install anything yourself, personally.

That's the only way of utilizing pressure sensitivity in Shi-Painter that I know of. Did you try messing around with the two sliders much? It seems a bit more kranky to use compared to something like Photoshop, but it works better than going without it.

Usually jtablet is needed to be able to activate the P at all. Maybe they've made some changes somewhere, I don't know. Smoother lines are normally achieved by being more careful, drawing in zoom mode, not actually using the pressure at all for lines, using the bezier line tool, or all of the above.
