Hey OP, your painting is alright. Your paint application is tight, you know how to render. But I think you should stop painting photographs, it's decent enough practice but you will get a lot more out of drawing from life. Set up a still life and draw it every day, re-arranging it, etc. Look at old master paintings, and go to art school if you're interested. You've got talent and you look young. I included an image of some life drawings I did as a freshman in college. What I'm saying is that if you get some friends to pose for you and work on 5, 10, 15 minute studies and no longer, you will find that your figures and portraits will come up a lot better, looking like your own hand and not an imitation of a picture. But first, definitely start drawing simple still life setups. Blocks, spheres, basic geometry. Once you can draw a cube from any perspective perfectly, you can draw anything.

What I mean is that don't expect to get a gallery to represent you and help you sell your work. Most will not even take a look unless you've got an MFA, and the lower galleries are looking at least for a BFA. I'm not defending it, in fact I find it quite disturbing. It is elitist, but also limits the market so that educated artists can make the money first. In a similar way that in the past, cities were run by guilds who controlled the market. In order to sell your paintings in say, Florence, you needed to join the Painter's Guild and become a master, first. It sucks, but it's actually good for the painters in the end.

However, being an artist and expressing yourself is as limitless and vague as you want it to be. I'm just telling you the truth about selling paintings, or any other traditional medium in art.

I can tell you right now this is not utter bullshit. I live in Philadelphia and I know a great deal of artists, a handful of them represented by galleries either here in the city, or in NYC. They all have MFA degrees. I'm not defending it. But if anyone wants to make a living selling art, I can tell you for a fact that collectors pay more money for a painting if the artists has an MFA degree versus a BFA degree. To the collector, hopefully they genuinely like your work, but also it is an investment. The higher your degree, the more money their investment is worth.

That sort of movement away from the gallery scene takes two things: a hell of a lot of friends behind your back, all refusing the galleries. And then, you need to find a new source of money. The middle class isn't interested in art (for the most part). They'd rather buy a BMW, a big screen TV or an Xbox 360 than a really beautiful painting. It's the upper class that patrons the arts, and right now they're invested in the gallery scene. And the gallery scene/museums are invested in the institutions, because actually all of the money comes from the same place. It's a big cycle of shit. That is the fucking truth.

Sometimes that works out. There are artists out there who don't have degrees. But how it works is that they immerse themselves within the art community, that art community being full of people who have MFA degrees. There is no other way to draw attention. You can't send your work to galleries and expect them to look at it. They just won't. Galleries found out about you either through word of mouth, you managing to secure a spot in a group show (which you can submit work to), or often times because they're paying attention to the college that you're attending/graduated from. So yes, it can be fucking done. But ironically you're not going to make it happen without a degree unless you surround yourself with people who have degrees.

That 's not the whole story of how the Art world operates. The prestigious world of Art today is a product of an historic complex of Universities and Galleries and Alumni.

It's not the MFA or the BFA that get's you into the gallery as much as it is the relation between the school, the gallery, and the artist. Most gallery owners our alumni. Most successful artist are related to alumni. The critiques that give buzz to work are related to alumni. Every body is connected through an association to some school or gallery. Universities and College pump money into 'supporting the Arts'. Gallery owners in return publicize the Art, most especially that of student work, a.k.a. 'up and coming artist'. Auctions are made (most of the buyers are alumni) and an atmosphere is had for people to believe that this 'art thing' they're all doing is prestigious, aristocratic, bourgeoisie-- good for the soul kind of snobbery. This in turn gives a comfort for when they send their kids off to school to 'study' painting, sculpting etc. Also by that comfort they pump money into the school to support the arts, and the whole cycle starts all over.

Basically it's how you are born into the circle jerk that is the fine art world, that gives the fruit of what's 'hot right now', or what's successful.

Granted there are those artist that seemingly come out of nothing, but if you look at who is buzzing about them, when and where they're doing it, it's not so much about the artist or the work as it's about the association the school and galleries get from the buzz.

And most artist that are not of a pedigree and are successful, don't become successful until well after, usually after the artist is dead or well pass retirement age. And that success is mostly due to some critic(s) trying to make a name for them self in the world of scholars, when they just happen to come across works that's have been sitting catalogs of schools and galleries for years.
