    >smoother (softer rendering? or stroke?)

I'll go with rendering. lots and lots of light strokes. if you're not very comfortable or consistent at being sensitive with pen pressure opacity, set it to pen pressure opacity AND put the brush opacity at 10-20%. lots and lots of light strokes. trial and error until you get what you want. also, if you handicap yourself, and learn without resorting to capped opacity or airbrush, you'll have a much more trained hand and won't be hindered by the program you're using. you'll be much more versatile!
    >better

    better what?

I'm thinking of taking one of these screencaps and blowing them up to a much higher resolution to make an unsettling image. The problem is that I'm not sure what I should establish the light source as. My only clues is that, from the background painting, it looks to be in the early afternoon and it's very sunny. I'll try and see if I can get it right with a very quick render before I go any further.

because surely that was their goal! open you mind a bit. anatomy isn't everything and is definitely not the indicator of a skilled artist.

no. I'll say it again like I've said before. but just stop this "medically accurate anatomy is the standard" nonsense. do you really think perfect anatomy is always aesthetic? don't be naive! there's nothing wrong with derivation. obviously those figure were NOT supposed to be anatomically correct. it's like you guys have visual aspergers. can't pick up on any clues at all.

accurate anatomy has it's place. that drawing was not it. dismissed.

No unity. Nothing self-shadowing or casting shadows.

Too many brushstrokes. It doesn't look fancy, it looks wasteful and confuses the eye. Refer to the OP image and >>1107920 for examples of neater brushstrokes that tell all the relevant information. Use a wide brush sometimes. Especially simplify the face.

Also pick a palette that unifies the colors. Everything's being hit by one certain color of light, you have to choose what color that is and tint every hue accordingly.

Pic related. Yellow light. Purple shadows which contrast the yellow light. It's pleasing to look at.

Fill in the details. You'll be stippling in lots of tiny pockmarks in the stone. More contrast between brush strokes, perhaps on a new layer to screw around with until you get the right mix, will bring out the ridges along the sides. Also, the left side of the rock is far too dull. Put more light cream into it.

he's saying you curved the line of the lower part of the abdomen to indicate that there was inward curvature at that part of the figure. since we're assuming this was not intentionally done we're going to point it out to you as a mistake, or at least note for further pieces. your pelvis curves outward unless you're starving.

    >Tummies curve outward

    Look at >>1108766

Unless your character has some weird, disfigured hunch back, the natural way for a belly will to be curving out. And since your character is in a fighting stance, he'd be in a strong position, and your back is strongest while in its natural, arched position.

That's also a reason why the pose looks unstable. His belly implies his back is curved or something weird, which looks weak because it is.

Do some anatomy studies. The spine is an "S" shape and the body very sharply reflects it. Understanding the curvature of the spine (and other bones, of course) can make a world of difference.

tl;dr you won't see many bellies curving inward.

I like your art style a lot. You're channeling mid 80's manga/anime, without feeling rehashed. I also enjoy that the body designs are horrific, but it's noticeable at first, the art style being airy and cheery as it is. This is probably pretentious to say but it's subtle. Line quality is good, too.

That said, it seems the woman in the top left had a large portion of the back of her skull carved out. I suppose, if her hair was completely flat against her head in the back, it'd be okay, but the rest of the hairstyle doesn't seem to compliment that. Her face seems really thin in the frontal view, but after looking at it, it's just the effect her hair has on the shape of it. Still, the first impressions on the woman's head make her seem really disproportionate compared to the young man on her right.

thanks, the hair part is really helpful, and also very helpful is the fact that you think the girl on the right is a guy.

how are you getting such straight lines? are you using a cintiq or tablet?

I can't seem to get straight lines working with a tablet but can do them just fine on a real sketch book
    >> harro 01/25/12(Wed)01:58 No.1109183
    >>1109177

it's just a matter of getting comfortable with a much more slippery surface (using a tablet), and at the same time the calibration is not as perfectly calibrated as real life tools are, so that takes getting used to as well.

Just keep using the tablet, there's no secret to it beyond becoming comfortable with a new tool.

(possible secret = quick comfortable strokes, don't do slow lines for inking)

Why not continue? If this is a study and you've learned something valuable, call it done. If not, there's plenty of real estate for a proper scene.

For starters, your campfire is not radiating orange light, as it should be. If you're worried about losing the colors on the rocks and kindle you may as well forget about it because a campfire late at night is going to be thoroughly orange. The almost gradient effect in the sky is not a good look in my opinion, so smooth that out. Unless this is a campfire in the middle of the desert, break up the skyline with some silhouettes of trees and foliage or anything other than a solitary mountain. Add some wispy clouds. Break up that constellation and be mindful of exactly where it's directing your eye.

Just finish the campsite. Always better to humiliate yourself a little than waste an opportunity for critiques on an area in which you need improvement.
