Da sword is kinda weird. Maybe that could be it. Also, the widows are ok that dark which is ok/good. But the figure has volume and is pretty much the same value than the windows, which doesn't relate it to the windows, and it's too dark to relate it to the background. I'd make the windows/wall totally black.

I don't particularly like to comment because I never post my own work, but honestly, I think you should find what it is your going for with your work. It looks anime-inspired, but the features and clothing are lacking in both depth and feeling. Why fake it when you don't have to? If you are weak in realism, start drawing from real people.

color is very boring, you just use variation of a single hue per object.

anatomy and proportion is decent, not that great but not bad either. I don't know about that horse though but seems you are drawing pokemon.

the background horizon is so low yet they don't follow the rules of perspective so they looks like giants.

    either way keep practicing.

(Don't worry, I like to post my work but don't comment much). My style is technically anime inspired, I draw mostly anime characters. But I do know what I'm going for, three different styles I want to perfect. Chibis because, well, they're quicker, simpler, and I always love how they appear when I'm done. A kind of simple style more like in the more cartoony anime, but still trying to pay attention to anatomy and necessary things for quality. And then, as attempted in the sketch, the style that takes the most practice time, semi-realism is what I call it. I don't really want to draw the pictures that look like photographs yet, I figure leave that for the cameras. It's just me trying still to use proper anatomy, proportions, etc, with still some simple non-realistic elements such as somewhat bigger eyes and ears (well, bigger eyes = bigger ears ANYWAY) and less major detail overall. I try to work in every sort of detail I notice in the mirror really.
    >The important part:
But depth, depth is the thing I have trouble with and I know it. I can't figure out how to foreshorten or anything that gives even the unrealistic a bit of a real life quality. Any advice, -anyone-, easy to follow references/tutorials, etc?

    >>1076729
sorry no shortcut will get you instant pro, even most pros will have problem foreshortening without ref, the best way to learn foreshortening, is by draw by forms, learn cross-sections of the anatomy and of course practice.

Ah, I wasn't looking for insta-pro (although I'm certainly eager to get there for my age and level of training), I just wanted good ideas for practice. I should learn to foreshorten basic shapes first though.

Did this today in my figure drawing class.
The idea is to use colors to accentuate form. The cool blue pushes back, and the sepia+brown bring forward.

    Could you be more specific?

I feel if I committed to the line more it would have worked, I come from a design background where line is everything.

Having a difficult time trying to draw backgrounds and making sure everything is proportional while drawing in Photoshop. Is there anything I can do to help me in my endeavor?

Things tend to go slanted or aren't sized correctly, among other things.

I was linked to a very helpful thread on conceptart.org but never got a chance to bookmark it. I've looked for quite sometime but can't seem to find it again.

slanted, would that be due to the fact that you can't rotate your canvas as easily with tablet/software as you can with paper/canvas?

Press shift while making lines with the mouse..it wont work with a pen from a tablet..and i think it has horizontal rulers under something like 'view'..haven't used it for a long time so i cant remember exactly..

or just use the line tool and then merge them together and flatten that layer or whatever it's called to use as a guideline

That's just a certain style..if he's going for realistic, then yeah, he needs to focus more on tone..but if it's a partially shaded, partially lined intentionally, then it's fine

i personally think it works..part line and part shading creates a nice effect

I think it's a combination. I stopped working on Photoshop due to getting buttfrustrated with myself. When I got back into it suddenly all of my crap is slanted.

The issue is not 'style' or the fact that there are outlines. The issue is that the outlines are poorly done. Not enough variation. Too harsh, too uniform

Meh... Don't know shit about drawing metal (that's an golden apple), hair, fabric, hands (!).

    anything else worth pointing out?
