A good one is durer for ink work.

Or any artists representation of a tree using ink.

A curly bullshit shitstorm you have for foliage is a paint to look at.

I have just started drawing complete figures since the beginning of August. But for some reason, they look "odd". I can't seem to put my finger on it. Is it the proportion? Anatomy? Or the poses themselves? It's been bugging me ever since I made these.

Two things I did notice is that I suck at foreshortening (arms, legs) and that at some angles my anatomy tends to look retarded (specifically the breasts, pelvis and feet).

i don't want invent a whole new design for you, but you should get rid, or change the sword and the shoulder armor, because they look like medieval . also the pilot helmet makes no sense and looks totally out of place. i assume you were going for some gas mask thing, but it looks like a pilot helmet. i don't get his gun, it looks like some kind of dough is coming out of the barrel.
these are the main points i am seeing there.

    >I know this is a piece of shit, but what does /ic/ think of the concept?

I doubt this is a conceptual piece. Concept is one of those words like 'Design' - thrown around a lot by people who don't fully understand it, and so attribute it to works that don't fit. Like one drawing is not a design, I highly doubt that you're exploring a concept with this piece.

What's the relevance of handstands? Explain that for us.

Those eyes are flat and scary please change it. Also he looks like he is standing on his toes not his hooves. Also his weight is on his leg closer to the walking stick wrench thing which makes no sense to me cause his weight should be on the leg further from it, just cause thats how most people lean against something, finally he looks like he is going to fall over.
Over all I feel like you didn't spend enough time thinking about what you were drawing, like you didn't thumbnail it out, and really flush out what would look good, this it probably just a glorified doodle in your sketch book. Which is sad, cause I like the idea and if it was fixed then pushed a little bit further it would be something I could see in my saved art folder

Everything is wrong in this. Now that I have tried and failed to do a worthwile drawing, I'll go back to studying, two months worth of practice are not enough to do something I might be proud of. Thanks for taking the time to give it a thorough crit! In all honesty, it's a glorified character concept more than an attempt at a finished piece or scene, the 'shrooms and ground were thrown in at the last minute because I'm fed up of characters floating on white, even if they're just concept shots, so to speak. So yeah, he's not really standing straight. It's fixable, I think. The eyes are flat because I need to keep them clear for colouring, they'll be less scary when there's some depth and shade, I promise!

Theres a really good lesson to be learned about you from that

You don't like to draw things you arn't sure you can draw, yet when you try to draw something you arn't confident about you end up enjoying yourself

You should focus your practice around improving at things that currently seem discouraging. If you overcome those hurdles you'll have fun drawing anything

Do you also feel the same way about specific practice regaurding an improvment in knoweldge in a particular area of drawing, such as attempting to improve your understanding about shading or how color works for example? If so who knows you could end up really liking that as well and the added knowledge would be really beneficial to you if you could figure out how that knoweldge translates to the brush

the way you're studying that skeletal figure isn't really helping. you could replace the bones with simple straight lines and it wouldn't have an effect on that figure.
You need to emphasize on where the bones stick out, like hips, elbows, knees, cheeks, nose, eyebrows, wrists, etc.
Try exaggerating at first, then when you know how how the skin wraps around the bones you can tone it down, with hint lines to make it look beautiful.

okayyy i thought i'd ask here...

i'm pretty sure everyone here is familiar with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount of shit you have to study. how do you know what to study first and set your priorities between stuff you haven't touched yet, stuff you know you'll need to understand, and stuff you plain suck at?

pic related on topic, my first landscape-ish study. (yeah shame on me... i didn't study animals yet either) i dont know if i should finish it or not since i have a huge list of things to study.

i like this, actually, except the back of the armchair looks really weird. I think you tried to draw her sitting back and those are cushion lines, but they don't acually make much sense and it looks more like shes leaning forward or to the side anyway. i'd just get rid of those altogether.

Good eye, it was. Did it on a grey color and overlayed a skin tone fill layer on it. I know it's a really shit way to go about it, but it was a method a friend told me to help me. I'm also aware having solid lines is pretty crap, it's a bad habit I'm having a hard time breaking.

Any recommendations to help improve/other issues I might be overlooking? I really want to get better at this.

Don't, because like you mentioned it, it's shit. It also won't get you anywhere. if you want to work grayscale to learn values before working with colors, that's absolutely fine, it's good even. But you need to learn blending, see attached picture. Learn it, study your reference, understand the underlying anatomy and shade accordingly.

As for improving issues and getting better: study. Study books, study life, study more. That's all there is to do.

all sound like good options, but as for my any of my own specific input I'd have to have more context, what dimensions you're working with, what kind of theme, etc. maybe draw up some thumbnails with different designs? I'm sure anything you come up with will be a good choice!

on an after thought, if you were to do any sort of flower-type borders, I would integrate them with the existing flowers of the subject. maybe give a sense of depth by alluding to the animal tearing at the vine/flowers surrounding it on the border? or possibly just a trail of flower petals trailing behind the animal? there's so many things you could do but you're clearly at a great stage already so feel free to experiment I guess.

can't wait for the finished result!

Gesture drawings shouldn't just be rushed scribbles. With your way of doing them, you aren't conveying any movement, which is the whole point of doing them in the first place. You should read up on the use of asymetric c- and s- curves in gesture drawings. Pic related.

I'm guessing you are doing 1 or 2 minute gestures, which is really not very helpful at all when you don't know the basics behind it. Take your time to learn it right before you start doing those.

god i hope those arnt 1-2 min gestures. they should be like 20 second ones....

also, i might recommend doing limited line gestures. limit yourself to 3-5 lines and try to get the gesture with just those marks. it really helps and reinforces movement in your drawings. for anatomy stuff, its good to just draw from studies and life as much as you can. And think about the c shapes (ie volume studies) like mentioned above

That Picaso picture, don't suppose you drew it upside down first? Like what 'Drawing on the right side of the brain" instructs?

I have never read the book, and have only learned (ie. less than an hour ago) that said Picasso drawing is featured as practice in it.
So no, I did not draw it all upside down, though some if it was drawn sideways or upside down on occasion.

I'm curious though, why is that featured as practice in the book? Drawing it upside down, I mean. Observational drawing is purely observational, drawing it what ever side up or down should be no more difficult. (I find it to be that way, at least)

    I've tried, yes.
I keep hitting a road block though, since I don't have a stand, the soft sculpy keeps deforming in my hand, and I end up resculpting the same part for hours on end.
So I'm holding sculpting off until I can make/buy a stand and proper tools.
Well that's enough cluttering up this thread with my posts for one night, I'm going to sleep, see ya.

drawing things upside down help with disassociating the subject of what you see with what you're actually seeing. since people have tendencies to draw what "they think they see" instead of what's really there, placing a reference image upside down makes everything unrecognizable (ideally) so that you can focus on the ['random'] shapes of values that you see and actually focus more on what you observe within the frame of the photo/drawing/still life than what you recognize, or are familiar with.

It's basically making you think of your reference as abstract and unfamiliar so you're not tempted to draw it a certain way by some previous influence.

Now I (as well) just just draw things right side up, but it has been helpful in the past. My first year of high school when I went to an art school- in my painting class, one of the students I remember painted her entire portrait project for the semester, at all different angles (rotating it constantly), constantly trying to get rid of the idea that she was painting a face, and rather just purely painting values that happened to become cohesive and look like a face. very interesting process. all of our canvases were gridded as well (where I learned that technique).

Do lots of practice on basic monotone (black/grey/white) values and shading first! Color is just essentially value and lighting. It was difficult for me to get the hang of it, but it will immensely improve your ability to color. Also! Do some studies of wild animals and fur and etc, that way you can more accurately render the fur on your subject. It just looks like she's wearing a plastic coat with pointy shit on her joints.

    Good luck though!

The book is trying to exercise the right part of your brain. It says the left side always is interfering by saying "this" and "that" is wrong during the processes and can ruin your art or something. So when drawing this upside down, the left side apparently just doesn't get the picture and can't piece what it would look like logically. So pretty much you're free to draw what you see instead of what you think you see.

That's a fairly big project for someone kind of new to digi painting, with a full body, bg, other details, etc., but yea, you're right. If you're not going for or intending for that soft painted look then you need to make your shadows stand out a lot more. I'd work on your bg stuff too, while you get an effort for the details like all the stuff on the floor, a lot of it is really blocky and sloppy and it lowers the quality of the pic as a whole.

But I do like the girl and the cat quite a bit, actually, painting issues aside, and the composition isn't half-bad, and there's a real mood to this. Really try to check out some tutorials and practice your painting techniques and keep at it, you've got a lot of potential for improvement.

Mostly this and, yea, decide how you're going to approach line art if you intend to use it going forward. The lines on the girl and cat look decent but her hair is like a gradient mop just sitting there, there should be an outline to match the rest of her or something. And there are nary a visible line throughout the rest of the picture, really, it's just sort of dis-orienting.

But, props for the effort and yea, there is a mood i'm feeling, normally I would say tone down the purple overlay but i dunno, I kind of like it here. Kind of. Don't depend on it for your pic's atmospheres, though.
