>A "Hooverville" was the popular name for shanty towns built by homeless people during the Great Depression. They were named after Herbert Hoover, who was President of the United States during the onset of the Depression and widely blamed for it. The term was coined by Charles Michelson, publicity chief of the Democratic National Committee.

Judging from the fact that people were constantly trying to assassinate Fidel Castro, this guy looks to be one of his many doubles standing in for him at this public occassion. From up close, like where the picture was taken you can tell it's not him. But to an assassin at a distance it would be easy to mistake for the real Castro.

being from AZ, this picture fucking kills it.

pictures like these...fuck...I can't even put into words how much it makes me wish I lived in simpler times.

like those men eating the bread. fuck. they were grateful for having shitty bread and soup, and now we have people their age complaining about "oh boo hoo my ipad shipped late" or "I can't believe that nobody is following my pinterest account" or stupid shit like that. I hate it. I hear it every day, and I think FUCK you should be grateful to even be ALIVE. do you realize how special that is in and of itself? you are alive, you have luxuries, you aren't starving, you live in a world of infinite information. and yet kids kill themselves because becky from my 9th grade biology class doesn't talk to me any more.

fuck. i wish I lived back then. wish i lived with people who took responsibility for themselves, took action, and realized how blessed they really are.

Your post is very telling. As a result, I think the next set of pictures will be mostly about the Great Depression. I'll do that theme for a bit right now and then return to it in my next round of posting.

Just as a side note, I'd encourage those who save the pictures to save them with the information. If the titles are too long open the properties of the pictures, go to the "Details" section and paste the descriptions in the Title, Subject or Comment sections, they can hold much more text. These pictures are interesting on their own and great to look at, but it's the story behind them that is the most engaging. Having the description allows the viewer to have a greater degree of connection to the image and allows your imagination to "place" you in that place, time, etc. Enough talk...

Just a quick bump before I get back to it later on.

>Hiroo Onoda is a former Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II. On December 26, 1944, he was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines. He was ordered to do all he could to hamper enemy attacks on the island, including destroying the airstrip and the pier at the harbor.

>His orders were, "You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, WE'LL COME BACK FOR YOU. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that's the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you to give up your life voluntarily."

>After the Allies invaded and took control of the island Onoda and some of his men fled to the jungle and hills to continue the fight as a guerrilla outfit, like they were ordered. When the war ended a few months later the men found leaflets airdropped in the jungle telling them war was over and orders from General Tomoyuki Yamashita to surrender. The men dimissed it as propaganda.

>On February 20, 1974, Norio Suzuki, a college dropout found Onoda after four days of searching. Onoda now the only one in the group who remained alive, still refused to surrender, saying that he was waiting for orders from a superior officer.

>The Japanese government located Onoda's commanding officer, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, who had since become a bookseller. He flew to Lubang where on March 9, 1974, he finally met with Onoda and fulfilled the promise made in 1944, "Whatever happens, we'll come back for you".

>In March of 1974, some 29 years after the official end of World War II, Hiroo Onoda, walks out of the jungle of Lubang Island in the Philippines. He handed over his sword (hanging from his hip in photo), his rifle, ammunition and several hand grenades and was finally relieved of duty by Major Taniguchi. He never actually surrendered.

That's a screenshot from an early Charlie Chaplin short film I believe. Note the black face, masks behind and eye make up.

If I'm correct about this, this seems like the one where one of Chaplin's character wreck havok on a live show on stage, while his other character is a gentlemen in the audience that eventually pies one of the performers.

By the way, for the three of you who may still not be aware, Shorpy remains a veritable treasure trove of restored, high-res archival images:

Not only the watermarks but the resolutions don't go really high either. Most of the time it's around 2000x2000 which is good but not as good as some of the 4000x4000 stuff on here. Also, because some of the stuff has been digitally restored, I've seen times where they've done a bad job compared to the original. Other than that Shorpy is still a great site. Btw, I don't use Shorpy for any of these, because the resolutions and the watermarks.

I think my favorite part about the Titanic picture, especially, is that those men BUILT that boat. They knew they were doing something extraordinary in building this craft, and it was the first time anything like this had ever been done- yet, in the picture, they still seem so humble and respectful, as if they knew they would be outdone someday. They are proud of their work, yet, if you saw people building something this innovative and groundbreaking today, you can bet that they would either A: be all dressed up and it would be like a corporate photo or B: all be throwing up stupid faces, gang signs, what ahve you and being like "YO dis iz da best shit evar we ain't never gonna be outdone 15 seconds of fame nigguh"

I love the titanic photo. respectful, humble men looking at something they were a part of with pride, humility, and amazement. it speaks volumes to me.

anyone care to explain why theres a 150 image limit on a board dedicated to image dumping?
>>
>>1719765
We reached limit? Oh well. Give this thread a little time to sink in so people can take a look and gather all the pictures. We'll make a new one soon enough but not too soon, or else others might disregard this one and it will get lost and deleted.

Great thread OP, much love. Saved a lot.

I can stare at these for hours, just need some music and tea. You're right how the backstory really adds to them, but I can't help but to make up my own stories as I look at them.
