Found another one via google. Well, slightly off-topic... it looks intact. Does the text say some part of the reactor is still active?

    Info for the picture:

It was (apparently) still live at the time they took that photo, but the whole complex was shut down in 2000.

There were four reactors in the complex, and the other three (of the same design) were still in use until then, because selling electricity was just about the only source of money (especially "hard currency") for Ukraine. The ongoing cleanup and containment costs were eating up about 10% of Ukraine's GDP, so they really needed the money. The government bowed to international pressure in 2000, having been given assurances that the rest of the world would help with the costs.

Do keep in mind that the reactor design was very old and was unsafe compared to modern designs, but (a) they were desperate for money, and (b) the reactors weren't really THAT unsafe, as long as no complete idiot decided to "simulate" an emergency by disabling a bunch of the safeties and then shutting off the coolant pumps. The primary cause of the whole disaster was human stupidity.

Nice thread, I've just read about the "Red forest" in Chernobyl. Pretty creepy and depressing. It seems the plants have mutated a lot in that area.

+1, I've researched the topic to death, and this is pretty much what it comes down to. Had engineers from any other country been there, all of Chernobyl would still be operating faultlessly today, but the Russian "must produce results" ethic meant this or some similar disaster would be inevitable.

Also, the Pripyat apartment pic ( >>999191) reminds me of one of the stories from that night; one of the the very first firefighters on the scene (who did not know what he was responding to) had a pregnant wife who was at home in their apartment only a mile or so away from the plant; she opened a window and leaned out of it to get some night air (also unaware of anything), and noticed that there was a bright white light in the distance with a shaft of light going into the sky. She noted a strange metallic taste in her mouth. All three were dead in a matter of hours.

Quick Question, sorry if its extremely dumb: What are all of the cranes for?(around the power plant)

i'd say to erect the cement sarcophargus.

    just a guess though.

You'' have to take the coriolis effect into account at this distance

The "metallic taste" has been noted repeatedly as a sign of massive radiation exposure. I just read about it in the wiki page on Louis Slotin, one of the researchers killed in an accident with one of the early nuclear bomb cores (see also the wiki on the "demon core").

As no one posted other Chernobyl photos I surmise this thread contains all good one that are in existence. There should be more floating around there.

no, nothing like that, it says that the dnepr reactor is still in function

Well if the people you are talking about both died after 3 hours of the meltdown. How did you fucking know that she witnessed a bright white light and felt a metallic taste in her mouth?
    Dead people talk do they?

I guess that was just made up. The Wikipedia article mentions something about the metallic taste the firefighters experienced when they first arrived at the scene, not knowing that the reactor core was on open fire.

Some additional information: The metallic taste is believed to be from Iodine-131 that was in the air. The radiation in the city of Pripyat itself reached a critical level on the evening after the disaster. And after 4 days of exposure the people would have died. So there's no way the woman could have died the same evening the reactor exploded.

I've never seen any photo taken during the initial core meltdown. That pillar of light described by several observers should be something to see at least once in a lifetime, espacially at distance.

I've seen CGI of it in a documentary that was on Discovery channel. You may find it on Google video. If it really looked like that, it must have been spectacular. A Russian described it, and told it was in all colors of a rainbow. But I'd rather not want to something like that for real.

I'm trying to find more photos taken by Igor Kostin. He was the first professional photographer on location just a few hours after the accident.

He was severely irradiated by flying directly over the reactor. Even his equipment was failing.
