To be honest... it seems weird to me US keeps issuing bills made out of cotton or some special paper.

It sucks: it's not resistent to humidity (try recovering some bills after a flood), they burn fast in fires, they get impregnated with sweat, with drugs, with other fluids (sneezes for example), they get written on with markers and abused forever...

Modern bills in EU are made of plastic and have all the security things this new 100 buck bill has

I guess US just doesn't want to invest into new money mills or something

There's a huge difference between wetting your bills in salty water and having your bills staying in muddy, moldy, full of fecals (read poo and piss) water for several days.

You can read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contaminated_currency or www.mahalo.com/contaminated-currency where you'll see 92% of 1$ bills some researchers collected had traces of cocaine, heroin, morphine and amphetamines and a ton of other drugs.

Plastic solves the problem and people will get over it and there's no reason why plastic AND paper bills wouldn't run at the same time for ten years or more for people to get used to.

Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, Shah of Iran from 1941 until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

    Not Persia, Iran.

Back at the University, in one class at the first day in the semester, we all had to stand and introduce ourselves to the class and say where we are from. One student stood and said his name (Nefdi or something) and he was from Persia. I said, "Well, hello. I'm [Bat Guano], a Phoenician. My friend, Dave, here, comes from the Land of the Hittites. There has been no 'Persia' since 1938 or so. It's called 'Iran,' now."

interestingly, Persia wasn't really what htye called themselves originally anyhow, they always refered to themselves as Ayrian (essentially, Iranian).
Persian was sort of a foreginers term for them, but it stuck, i honestly don't think it matters what you choose.
It does get a bit confusing however, because Persian typically means indigenous to Iran, whereas Iranian is essentially just a nationality.

Bat Guano pointed out to this "Persian" that there has been no Persia since before World War 2. He was not rude about it, but the Phoenician and Hittite references were humorous. He knows his Asia Minor, obviously.

I don't know about Anon here, but I love paying with dollar coins for some reason. I feel so badass when I pull 14 of these bad boys from my little cloth pouch and set them on the counter.

Last I heard, a US penny costs 1.7 to 2 cents to manufacture, making it a grotesque waste of money.
I have heard of Congressional bills being argued to stop production of pennies (and nickels in some bills), but for some reason these bills went nowhere.

Pic: US Union shield penny (2010–present).
Instead of discontinuing the penny, the Treasury designed a new model.

Discontinuation of the Penny is always defeated because of the face on it, not because of its value. Lincoln is an over-rated president, but is loved by too many for them to discontinue the coin bearing his likeness.

And yet virtually every world currency has cent-equivalent currency in production. It doesn't matter if it's important to you, it's important to have the baseline represented- and that is the cent, not the dollar.

Suomen Pankki, 1 markka, dated issue 1963, the last 1 Markka ever issued in Finland.

1963 was the first time since 1918 when Finland issued the 1 Markka banknote and the last time as well. Starting in 2002 Finland no longer issues its own currency, it is now part of Euro monetary system.
