This is going to sound totally stupid, but how in Jesus' sweet name do they get those cranes down? It's not like you can break them down small enough to be carried out by hand... Its just something I've wondered about hi-rise construction.

well, they're disassembled and lowered by the last crane in parts. the last crane is itself disassembled and lowered in parts by a smaller winch. the winch itself fits in parts in a regular freight elevator.

I'll never understand the motivation for this "Freedom Tower" bullshit. I think they should put the damned things up exactly as they were before this happened. Certainly take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade wherever possible but I mean literally replace them with visually identical (or nearly so) copies. I can think of nothing that should be more "shovel ready" under the concept of what a public works "stimulus" should be all about. Ensure that the 100% (no exceptions) of the materials are produced in the USA, and that only legal USA workers (no exceptions) are employed in the construction/logistics would mean a real major boost to economy of the greater NYC area, and indeed, many other parts of the nation as well.
